For screenshots of signed-in web pages, Playwright has the clearer documented path for saving and reusing browser authentication: sign in once, save the context’s storageState, then load it in later test contexts. Puppeteer can also capture authenticated pages, but you establish and preserve the session using the site’s actual login flow and browser context; its Page.authenticate() helper is for HTTP authentication, not ordinary application logins. Both libraries support page and element screenshots. Choose based on the login mechanism and whether integrated visual-baseline assertions matter—not on an assumed speed advantage.
What matters when capturing an authenticated page
A screenshot script must do more than open a URL. It needs a valid signed-in session, must wait until the intended authenticated content is present, and must capture the right area consistently. The choice between Playwright and Puppeteer is therefore mostly about session setup and the surrounding test workflow.

- Website login: a form, OAuth flow, or application token usually creates browser state that must be established and reused.
- HTTP authentication: a browser-level challenge such as HTTP Basic authentication is a separate mechanism.
- Capture scope: decide whether you need the visible viewport, the full page, or one element.
- Visual regression: if screenshots are compared with saved baselines, consider the test-runner support as well as the capture API.
Neither library’s cited documentation establishes a universal runtime or reliability winner for a particular screenshot workload. Browser and version, authentication flow, page behavior, and wait conditions all affect results.
Playwright vs Puppeteer at a glance
| Need | Playwright | Puppeteer |
|---|---|---|
| Reuse a signed-in session | Documented storageState save-and-load workflow; documented state includes cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, and passkey/WebAuthn-based authentication. |
Browser contexts isolate cookies and local storage, and the API documents context cookie operations. The cited sources do not establish a matching serialized storage-state workflow. |
| Capture a page or element | page.screenshot() supports options including output path and rendering scale. |
Page.screenshot() captures a page; ElementHandle.screenshot() captures an element and scrolls it into view if needed. |
| Compare visual baselines | Playwright Test provides toHaveScreenshot(), which waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing the last capture. It is available only with the Playwright test runner. |
The cited Puppeteer sources do not establish an equivalent built-in baseline assertion. |
| HTTP authentication | Use the authentication method appropriate to the site and browser context. | Page.authenticate() provides credentials for HTTP authentication and enables request interception behind the scenes, which may affect performance. |
| Comparative speed | Not established for a same-workload comparison in the cited official material. | Not established for a same-workload comparison in the cited official material. |
Use Playwright when reusable login state or visual assertions are central
Playwright’s authentication guide shows how to create an authenticated state file and load it in later tests. The guide covers cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, and passkey/WebAuthn-based authentication. Session storage is not handled by that flow automatically; saving and restoring it requires custom code. See the Playwright authentication guide.

Save a signed-in state
In a Playwright Test project, use a setup project or setup step to sign in and save state. Verify the authenticated page before writing the state, so a redirect or delayed session creation does not leave you with an incomplete file. A typical configuration pattern is:
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
projects: [
{
name: 'setup',
testMatch: /auth.setup.ts/,
},
{
name: 'chromium',
use: {
browserName: 'chromium',
storageState: 'playwright/.auth/user.json',
},
dependencies: ['setup'],
},
],
});
The setup test can log in and save the state after checking a page-specific sign-in indicator:
import { test as setup, expect } from '@playwright/test';
setup('authenticate', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/login');
await page.getByLabel('Email').fill(process.env.TEST_EMAIL!);
await page.getByLabel('Password').fill(process.env.TEST_PASSWORD!);
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Sign in' }).click();
await expect(page.getByRole('navigation', { name: 'Account' })).toBeVisible();
await page.context().storageState({ path: 'playwright/.auth/user.json' });
});
Replace the example URL and selectors with the target application’s actual login controls and a reliable indicator of a completed sign-in. Use environment variables or a secret manager for credentials rather than placing them in source code.

Capture a page or element
Once the configured context has loaded the stored state, use the page screenshot API. The following test waits for content that matters to the capture and writes a full-page image:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('capture signed-in page', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/account');
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Your account' })).toBeVisible();
await page.screenshot({ path: 'account.png', fullPage: true });
});
For a visual regression check, Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion waits until two consecutive page screenshots produce the same result, then compares the last capture with its baseline. This assertion is specific to Playwright Test, not a general feature of every Playwright test runner integration. See the PageAssertions API and the Page API.
Protect authentication state
Playwright warns that state files can contain sensitive cookies and headers that may let someone impersonate the account. Keep the auth directory out of version control, for example by adding playwright/.auth to .gitignore. If the state only needs to exist during a test run, a test output directory can be used instead of a persistent project path. Do not store a state file as an ordinary test artifact accessible to people or systems that should not access the account.

Use Puppeteer when its browser-context and capture APIs fit your flow
Puppeteer documents page and element screenshots, browser-context isolation, and context cookie operations. Create or select the context for the account, run the application’s actual authentication flow there, wait for the authenticated page state, and then capture. The cited API documentation does not show a Playwright-style serialized storage-state workflow; plan how your own project will establish and persist the session. See the Puppeteer Screenshots guide and BrowserContext API.
Example: log in and capture an element
This runnable pattern uses a fresh browser context, signs in through an application form, waits for a signed-in indicator, and screenshots a target element. Install Puppeteer in the project with npm install puppeteer; set the example credentials in the environment before running it.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const context = await browser.createBrowserContext();
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 1000, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.goto('https://example.com/login', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.locator('input[name="email"]').fill(process.env.TEST_EMAIL);
await page.locator('input[name="password"]').fill(process.env.TEST_PASSWORD);
await page.locator('button[type="submit"]').click();
await page.waitForSelector('[data-testid="account-home"]', { visible: true });
await page.goto('https://example.com/account', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.waitForSelector('[data-testid="account-summary"]', { visible: true });
await page.locator('[data-testid="account-summary"]').screenshot({ path: 'account-summary.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})().catch(error => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
Update selectors to match the application. If you need a page screenshot instead, use await page.screenshot({ path: 'account.png', fullPage: true });. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide describes Page.screenshot() for page capture and ElementHandle.screenshot() for an element; the latter scrolls the element into view if necessary.

Do not confuse HTTP credentials with an application login
Puppeteer’s Page.authenticate() supplies credentials for HTTP authentication. It does not fill out an arbitrary website login form or automatically create the application’s signed-in browser state. The Page API says this method turns on request interception behind the scenes, which may affect performance. Use it only when the target actually uses HTTP authentication, and account for that behavior in the capture workflow. See the Puppeteer Page API.
Make captures reproducible
Whichever library you use, make the screenshot conditions explicit. A successful navigation does not necessarily mean that the page has finished rendering the authenticated content you want.
Recommended Free Tools
- Wait for an application signal: wait for an account heading, authenticated navigation, or other page-specific element rather than relying only on a generic navigation event.
- Fix the viewport and scale: use the same viewport dimensions and device scale for each run when comparing images.
- Choose the capture region deliberately: viewport capture is usually smaller; full-page capture includes content below the fold; an element capture isolates a component.
- Handle dynamic content: timestamps, rotating banners, and live data can change pixels even when the page is healthy. Hide or stabilize such content if the application allows it.
- Know the state’s lifetime: sessions may expire or depend on server-side state. Regenerate saved authentication state when the application requires a fresh login.
Troubleshooting authenticated screenshots
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The capture shows a login page | The state was not loaded, is expired, or the sign-in flow did not finish before state was saved. | Check the setup step’s authenticated-page assertion, regenerate the state, confirm the configured state path, and wait for the intended signed-in indicator before capturing. |
| Playwright state works for cookies but not session storage | Session storage requires custom save/load handling in Playwright’s documented workflow. | Implement explicit session-storage persistence for the application or use another supported session mechanism; do not assume storageState alone includes it. |
| Puppeteer’s HTTP credentials do not sign into the site | The page uses a normal application login rather than HTTP authentication. | Automate the website’s login flow or establish its expected browser state. Reserve Page.authenticate() for HTTP authentication challenges. |
| The screenshot is blank or missing late content | The capture ran before the authenticated content rendered or before lazy content appeared. | Wait for a meaningful page or element selector. For a full-page capture, confirm that below-the-fold content has had a chance to load. |
| Visual baselines fail intermittently | Content or rendering conditions vary between runs. | Hold viewport, scale, browser setup, and application data steady; wait for the relevant content. Playwright Test’s screenshot assertion itself waits for consecutive matching captures, but it cannot make changing application data identical. |
| HTTP-authenticated captures become slower | Puppeteer’s Page.authenticate() enables request interception, which may affect performance. |
Use the helper only where HTTP authentication is required, and measure the real workflow if latency matters. |
