Why a paywall can remain after sign-in
Login and subscription access are separate checks. Your sign-in proves that the service recognized an account; the paywall indicates that the service has not confirmed paid access for that account. The subscription may be attached to a different service login, managed through a different store account, inactive, or temporarily out of sync.

For example, OpenAI says a mobile subscription can be associated with both the app-store account and the service account that was signed in when the subscription was purchased. Its guidance is to return to the original service account if you later signed into another one. OpenAI’s subscription guidance applies to that provider’s case; other services may handle account linking differently.

- Find out where you subscribed. Check the confirmation email or receipt and the subscription or billing settings in the App Store, Google Play, or the service’s own website. The seller or billing provider determines where to verify the plan and which recovery steps apply.
- Compare the service account with the one used at purchase. Check the email or sign-in method displayed in the app or website. Signing in with Apple, email, a phone number, or another identity method can sometimes lead to a different service account. Follow the provider’s account guidance; for ChatGPT mobile subscriptions, OpenAI specifically advises signing back into the original ChatGPT account.
- Verify that the plan is active. Check the store or provider account that manages billing. A canceled or expired plan does not grant current paid access. Adobe’s guidance for Lightroom says only active subscriptions can be restored in its case, so check the exact app’s rules if its behavior differs.
- Restore an eligible store purchase, if applicable. In the app, look for an option such as Restore Purchases and ensure the device is signed into the same Apple Account or Google Account used to buy the subscription. A store restore option generally will not restore a plan purchased directly from the service’s website; use that provider’s billing instructions instead.
- Refresh the app or page. Close and reopen the app, restart the device, or reload the page after correcting the account or restoring the purchase. If the problem happens only in a browser, try a private window. Cache, VPN, or ad-blocking settings can interfere with some services’ browser access; check the provider’s support guidance before changing them.
- Escalate if a valid charge still has no access. Contact the app or service provider with the app name, device and operating-system version, the account email or sign-in method, what you already tried, and the receipt’s date, time, and product name. Do not share your password. Apple directs users to the developer when a paid in-app purchase still cannot be restored.

App-store purchase or direct subscription?
The receipt identifies the right recovery route. An Apple- or Google-billed subscription is managed through the relevant store account; a web purchase may be managed in the service’s billing portal. If you are not sure which account holds a subscription, check alternate store accounts and receipt emails before attempting another purchase.

Restoration has limits. Apple distinguishes eligible restorable purchases, including some subscriptions, from consumable purchases such as in-game currency or hints, which cannot be restored. Use the app’s restore option only for a purchase the provider and store classify as restorable.
Store support can help with store billing, but the app developer handles app-specific access. Google Play explains: “Payments for subscriptions are processed by Google Play but the app developer is responsible for the app and its content.” Apple similarly advises contacting the developer if you were charged but still cannot restore an in-app purchase.

What not to do
- Do not buy again just to test it. First check the account, purchase channel, and subscription status. OpenAI warns that trying another mobile purchase while signed into a different service account can cause confusion or duplicate charges.
- Do not assume a successful login confirms payment. Verify the plan separately in the store or billing account.
- Do not try a store restore for a direct web purchase. Follow the service’s billing instructions for the channel that charged you.
