To stream an ambient video loop for 24 hours, send a prerecorded video to a YouTube Live encoder stream from a computer that stays on, or use a cloud service that loops uploaded video. In YouTube Studio, create an encoder stream, copy its stream URL and key into your encoder, set a stable bitrate and a 2-second keyframe interval, then check the Live Control Room preview before going live. Plan a separate recording if you need an archive: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
- A prerecorded ambient video and soundtrack that you have the rights to use in a livestream and any recording or archive.
- An encoder, such as software running on a computer or a hardware encoder, plus an upload connection able to sustain your chosen stream settings.
- A local recording plan if you need to retain the full 24 hours. YouTube may not capture a stream exceeding 12 hours.
YouTube does not require expensive gear for this setup. Its encoder workflow supports software and hardware encoders; the important practical constraint for local encoding is keeping the machine and network connection running.

Set up the YouTube Live encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live. Select the encoder streaming workflow in Live Control Room. If live streaming has not previously been enabled, allow for initial activation, which YouTube says may take up to 24 hours.
- In Live Control Room, create or configure the stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not publish it or share it publicly.
- Open your encoder and choose its YouTube or custom RTMP/RTMPS destination. Paste the stream URL and stream key into the matching fields. Prefer RTMPS when your encoder offers it; YouTube recommends it.
- Set the video and audio output using the settings below. Keep the source video’s aspect ratio and choose an output your internet upload can sustain consistently.
- Start sending from the encoder. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and check the picture, sound, and stream health before selecting Go live if the event is scheduled for a separate start time.
For a continuous loop, configure the encoder to repeat the ambient video or playlist. The exact loop control depends on the encoder you choose; YouTube’s Live Control Room receives the encoder feed rather than looping a file on its own.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, at frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a 2-second keyframe frequency; do not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube transcodes the incoming feed for different viewer formats. Follow the current settings table on YouTube’s encoder settings page when configuring or publishing, because platform recommendations can change.

These are YouTube’s recommended ranges, not a guarantee that a particular encoder or connection will hold the upper end. Run an upload speed test and leave headroom rather than setting a bitrate at the edge of what the connection can deliver. For stereo audio, YouTube lists 128 Kbps and supports AAC or MP3. Match the output to the source; raising resolution or bitrate cannot restore detail that is not present in the original.
Protect the archive and monitor the full-day stream
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its help page states: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A 24-hour broadcast therefore should not be treated as a guaranteed complete YouTube recording. - Enable local recording in your encoder before starting, if you need a full copy. Confirm the destination has enough free storage for the entire recording.
- Start the recording and verify that the file is growing. Check it again during the stream; a recording that silently stops will not provide a complete backup.
- Test with movement and audio similar to the actual ambient program. Inspect the Live Control Room preview and the public watch page, including on a phone if mobile playback matters to your audience.
- Monitor stream health, audio, and video throughout the broadcast. YouTube’s live tips advise setting up at least two hours beforehand and starting the encoder 15 minutes before the event; adapt that lead time to your setup and schedule.
- When ending, stop the YouTube event and then stop the encoder. If you use a backup encoder, test failover before the live event rather than assuming it works.
A single-encoder ambient stream does not require a redundant encoder, but it does require accepting that a local computer, power supply, encoder process, or internet connection can fail. A cloud workflow avoids leaving your home computer online, but does not remove the need to check stream status or keep a separate copy if you need an archive.
Clear rights for both the image and the sound
You are responsible for having the rights needed to provide livestream content worldwide, including music rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; it may replace the feed with a placeholder and warn you, and continued use can interrupt or terminate the stream. Even licensed material may require the rights owner to add your channel to an allowlist to prevent interruptions. Understand the monetization risk of a repetitive loop
A 24-hour loop is not automatically eligible for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy applies to livestreams and expects monetized content to be original and authentic; highly repetitive or mass-produced programming may be ineligible. Reused-content review is separate from copyright: permission to use footage or music does not by itself establish monetization eligibility. The stream key is rejected or no preview appears
- Check that the URL and key were copied from the same YouTube Live Control Room stream and pasted into the encoder’s matching fields.
- Confirm live streaming is enabled on the channel. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Verify that the encoder is actually sending and that the selected RTMP/RTMPS destination matches its configuration.
The preview is unstable or the stream health degrades
- Reduce bitrate or output resolution until the upload connection can sustain it, then test again. The recommended ranges are targets, not required minimums or guaranteed capacities.
- Use constant bitrate, a 2-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS where available. Check the current YouTube encoder guidance if an encoder labels these settings differently.
- Check the connection and encoder logs for interruptions; a 24-hour local stream depends on the sending machine and network remaining available.
The YouTube recording is missing or incomplete
Do not rely on YouTube to retain a 24-hour stream: streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use local recording and verify the file is growing, with sufficient disk space for the full duration.

The stream stops before the full day is over
Check whether the encoder, computer, power, upload connection, or source playback stopped. Restart sending from the encoder and inspect the Live Control Room; if using a scheduled event, check the event state and preview before going live again. A local recording is useful only if it was configured and remained active through the interruption.
