In OBS, open Settings → Output, enable Automatically Reconnect, choose a Retry Delay and Maximum Retries, then apply the settings. These controls make OBS retry its connection; they cannot restore a failed internet connection or guarantee YouTube will keep a broadcast active through a long outage. Test before going live and check recovery in both OBS and YouTube Live Control Room.
Set automatic reconnect in OBS
- Open OBS and select Settings → Output.
- Enable Automatically Reconnect.
- Set Retry Delay and Maximum Retries to values appropriate for your stream and likely interruptions.
- Select Apply, then OK.
The English interface uses those control names in the OBS project’s current localization, but menu wording and layout can vary by installed version. Check your version’s Output settings if you do not see the same labels. OBS and YouTube do not establish one best retry delay or retry count for every connection, so avoid treating any single value as universally correct.

Test your stream before relying on reconnect
Before an important broadcast, test the encoder and your upload connection. YouTube recommends checking upload bitrate, matching stream quality to the connection available, and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. See YouTube’s guidance for live encoder settings.

OBS settings can prompt retries after disconnection, but the network path from your computer to YouTube’s ingest server must work again before those retries can succeed.

What to do when the internet drops
- Restore the connection. Let OBS retry while you check whether your local network and internet service have returned. If the ISP connection or route to the ingest server is still down, repeated retries cannot fix it.
- Check OBS. Confirm whether OBS reports a successful connection rather than continuing to show a disconnect.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Verify that YouTube is receiving data, review stream health and read any encoder messages. YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting steps recommend checking that the encoder is operating and that the outbound internet connection is strong. Contact your ISP if the connection itself remains faulty.
- Assess the broadcast state. A successful OBS reconnection does not assure YouTube will preserve the same broadcast after a prolonged interruption. Use the Live Control Room’s status and messages to determine whether the stream is active or needs further action.
Reduce repeated disconnects
Stabilize the local network
Use Ethernet where practical. OBS’s official Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, says: “It’s recommended to use a wired connection when streaming.” Wi-Fi instability can interrupt streaming; an Ethernet cable may help with that local weakness, but it will not fix an ISP outage.
OBS also lists VPN instability, security software interference, network-optimization utilities, outdated network drivers, and faulty routers, modems, cabling or other network equipment among possible causes. Check these alongside ISP congestion rather than assuming the OBS reconnect control is the only issue.

Match bitrate to a stable connection
If the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, lower it to a level supported by your stable upload speed and test again. YouTube recommends matching stream quality to the connection; OBS also suggests lowering bitrate based on stable upload speed. The trade-off is reduced video quality. OBS’s dynamic bitrate option may reduce dropped frames when the connection cannot keep up, but OBS cautions that this does not solve the underlying network problem.
Try network changes carefully
OBS suggests trying a different server when troubleshooting a connection to the remote ingest server. The available choice can depend on your configuration; this is general advice, not evidence that one geographically selectable YouTube ingest server is best throughout India.

On Windows, OBS suggests enabling network optimizations and TCP pacing. It advises leaving Bind to IP at Default; testing IPv4-only is an option, but if it makes no difference, return to IPv4 and IPv6. Change one thing at a time and retest so you can tell whether it helped.

The reconnect controls and troubleshooting advice are general OBS and YouTube guidance; there is no established India-specific retry value, ISP setting or YouTube server behavior to rely on. Your local ISP, route and upload stability determine whether OBS can reconnect from your location. Test the actual connection you will use for the broadcast, and contact your ISP if outbound service remains unreliable.
