How to Stream a 24/7 YouTube Channel with OBS on an M2 Mac mini

An M2 Mac mini can host OBS for YouTube Live, but nonstop operation requires testing and depends on power, internet, and recovery behavior.

Yes—an M2 Mac mini can run OBS and send a YouTube livestream, but compatibility is not a guarantee of unattended, nonstop operation. You’ll need a YouTube-ready channel, a live event and stream key, tested OBS output settings, and a reliable internet and power connection. Follow the setup below, then test your actual programme before relying on it.

Before you set up OBS, make sure YouTube Live is ready

YouTube requires a verified channel without a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Decide what you will broadcast and confirm you have the necessary rights. A 24/7 schedule does not exempt a channel from copyright rules or YouTube policies. Repeated or unlicensed music and video can lead to claims, restrictions, or removal. Use material you own, have permission to stream, or are otherwise entitled to use.

Can an M2 Mac mini run OBS all day?

The 2023 M2 Mac mini has an 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 100 GB/s memory bandwidth, and Gigabit Ethernet, according to Apple’s technical specifications. OBS supports Apple Silicon on macOS, and documents Apple VideoToolbox H.264 hardware encoding. That makes the M2 a plausible OBS host for this job, not a promise that every scene, source, and output setting will run continuously without interruption. OBS cautions that meeting system requirements alone does not guarantee streaming capability: OBS system requirements.

Set up a YouTube 24/7 stream with OBS

  1. Install OBS. Download OBS for macOS from the official OBS site and follow its Mac installation steps to open the DMG and move OBS into Applications. Confirm your macOS version is supported on the OBS macOS versions page; its compatibility information changes as releases advance.
  2. Create a YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, create or select the event, and choose its stream key. Copy the server URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube or a custom service as appropriate, and enter the server and key. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your event. YouTube supports reusable custom keys and has auto-start and auto-stop settings; check the event settings before going live. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
  3. Build the programme in OBS. Add the video, audio, and other sources you intend to run; arrange them in scenes and check that transitions, overlays, and audio behave as expected. For a continuous channel, make sure the content source itself can repeat or otherwise provide uninterrupted material. Test the exact scene and source workload you plan to broadcast rather than assuming a simple test scene represents it.
  4. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together. For H.264, YouTube’s current guidance recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are codec- and mode-specific recommendations, not universal requirements; consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table for other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs. Pick an output your upload connection can sustain, and leave room for normal network variation rather than planning to use all measured upload capacity. YouTube does not specify a universal amount of headroom.
  5. Use standard encoder settings as a starting point. For a straightforward SDR stream, use H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, progressive video, and square pixels. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed 4 seconds. For stereo audio, its guidance recommends AAC at 128 Kbps; YouTube also lists MP3 as an accepted audio option. OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox H.264 streaming on Apple Silicon; see OBS hardware encoding. Available encoder choices depend on your OBS configuration, so do not assume all codecs listed by YouTube appear in OBS.
  6. Choose latency for the programme. Lower latency can make audience interaction more immediate, but YouTube warns that it may mean more playback buffering. A mostly prerecorded or passive 24/7 channel may have less need for the lowest latency than an interactive broadcast. Review YouTube’s live stream settings and test the setting with your intended audience experience.
  7. Preview and test before launch. Start a test stream with representative movement and audio. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators, then verify playback on the channel or watch page. If mobile viewing matters to your audience, check from a phone too. YouTube specifically advises testing before starting a live stream.

What happens if the internet, power, or OBS fails?

A local OBS stream depends on the Mac, OBS, the network connection, and power remaining available. The official guidance cited here does not establish a guaranteed unattended restart or recovery sequence after an internet outage, power loss, application crash, or system restart. Do not promise yourself or viewers that OBS will automatically resume in every failure case. Test recovery yourself: interrupt the connection during a private or unlisted test, restore it, and confirm what OBS and Live Control Room actually do for your setup.

The cited YouTube guidance also does not establish the current maximum duration of a continuous event or whether a single 24/7 event will be fully archived. If you need a recording, confirm YouTube’s current archive behavior for your event and arrange a separate recording or event schedule if your workflow requires one.

Common problems and what to check

  • You can’t start a stream: check that the channel is verified, has no live restriction within the previous 90 days, and has completed first-time activation. Recheck the selected event, server URL, and stream key.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health or playback buffers: lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a level your connection can reliably sustain. Run an upload-speed check and test again; a speed test is only a snapshot, not a guarantee of stable capacity.
  • The picture or audio differs from the preview: verify the active OBS scene, source visibility, audio meters, and selected audio devices. Test with representative motion and sound before making the event public.
  • The stream does not recover after an interruption: check both OBS and Live Control Room rather than assuming the encoder restarted correctly. Reconnect or restart only after confirming the event’s state; use a test event to learn how your configuration behaves.
  • The Mac can stream a simple scene but struggles with the real programme: reduce scene complexity or output demands and test again. Basic compatibility cannot establish performance for every source count, resolution, or thermal environment.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to keep looping uploaded videos without leaving the Mac mini running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs the loop from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams uploaded material as made, up to 4K 60 fps, at one flat price per slot; it includes 10 GB storage per slot, pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. It is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo pricing for available billing periods. Check your content rights before streaming, whichever setup you choose.
