Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11First identify which part failed: an OBS media source can go blank or stop playing while OBS continues streaming, or OBS can lose its connection to YouTube while the source still works in the preview. These are different problems. Restore the source for the first; troubleshoot OBS’s encoder connection for the second.
Identify whether the source or the YouTube connection failed
Check the OBS preview and YouTube’s Live Control Room or player. If the preview is blank, frozen, or missing audio, troubleshoot the scene or source. If the preview looks and sounds right but YouTube reports a connection problem or viewers see a stall, troubleshoot the stream connection. A playback option cannot reconnect a disconnected encoder, and reconnecting the encoder cannot restore a missing media file.

Restore a missing or stopped OBS source
Check the scene, visibility, and stacking order
- In OBS, select the scene used for the broadcast and check that the expected source is still listed in the Sources panel.
- Make sure the source is visible. Check its eye icon and confirm that another source above it is not covering it.
- Right-click the source and open its properties. For a local file, verify that the file path points to a file that is available to the computer running OBS.
OBS’s Sources Guide explains how sources are added, shown, hidden, and ordered. A hidden or covered source may appear to have failed even when its media is still available.
Set the local Media Source playback behavior
For a local video loaded as an OBS Media Source, check these properties against the intended behavior. The labels below are OBS’s documented names; their availability or presentation may vary by version.

- 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. - Loop: enable it if the clip should replay after it reaches the end.
- Restart playback when source becomes active: enable it if the file should start from the beginning when the source is in the current scene and visible. OBS describes this setting as making the file restart once the source is in the scene and visible.
- Close file when inactive: consider leaving this off when you want to avoid unloading and reloading the file during scene changes. OBS notes that closing the file unloads it and can cause a short delay when it reloads.
- Show nothing when playback ends: check this if the source disappears after the file finishes; OBS describes the option as automatically hiding the source when playback ends.
These controls govern local-file playback and visibility. Restarting a Media Source is not a universal repair for a lost camera, failed network feed, or disconnected YouTube encoder.
Check a VLC playlist separately
If the scene uses an OBS VLC Video Source, verify that the playlist entries still refer to playable media, and check Loop Playlist and the source’s visibility. OBS says VLC Source uses VLC libraries for extended media support and requires VLC to be installed. For 64-bit OBS, the documented requirement is 64-bit VLC. A VLC playlist is a separate source path; switching to it does not guarantee recovery if a media URL or file is unavailable. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.

Reconnect OBS when the preview works but YouTube does not
Check automatic reconnect
When the source is still playing in OBS but the outgoing stream has been interrupted, inspect Settings → Advanced for OBS’s automatic reconnect controls. The OBS Studio overview identifies automatic reconnect as an Advanced setting. It can help with an encoder or network interruption; it does not fix a missing file or blank source. Consult the OBS Studio Overview Guide for the current overview.
Diagnose dropped frames and network interruptions
OBS says dropped frames indicate that the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. Its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the selected server, lowering bitrate to match stable upload capacity, checking whether security software or a VPN interferes, and examining modem, router, and network hardware. If the route appears to be outside your control, contact your ISP.

- Temporarily check for VPN or security-software interference, following your network and security policies.
- Inspect the local network equipment and connection; contact the ISP if the issue appears upstream.
Verify the YouTube event and encoder credentials
If OBS cannot send to the intended broadcast, confirm that it is configured for the right event and that the stream URL and key match the event in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube describes a stream key as the encoder’s “password and address.” Keep it private. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement.
Review that event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings if your workflow depends on restarting OBS. Do not assume a YouTube event will remain live indefinitely after its encoder feed stops. YouTube’s encoder instructions say, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder,” and scheduled-stream instructions also describe ending the stream in Live Control Room and stopping the encoder feed. Follow the event’s settings and current directions in Manage live stream settings and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Plan continuity for an important broadcast
YouTube advises creators to “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” For a supported redundant encoder setup, YouTube’s failover guidance describes testing the backup by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then confirming that the player rolls over to the backup encoder. Treat that as a failover test to rehearse for a setup that supports it—not as a capability automatically available to every single-encoder OBS installation. See YouTube live streaming tips.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Monitor both picture and sound at the viewer-facing stream, not only the OBS preview.
- Rehearse the recovery steps before a high-stakes broadcast, including who checks the source and who checks the YouTube event.
- If using a redundant encoder arrangement, test that the backup actually takes over before relying on it live.
Common symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source is blank, and the OBS preview is also blank | Missing file, hidden or covered source, or source playback state | Scene visibility and order, file path, and Media Source properties |
| Clip plays once and then disappears | Playback reached the end; looping may be off, or the source hides at the end | Enable Loop if needed; review Show nothing when playback ends |
| Video restarts after a scene change | Restart playback when source becomes active is enabled | Change the setting if you do not want a restart on activation |
| OBS preview works but YouTube stalls or disconnects | Ingest connection instability or insufficient stable upload capacity | Automatic reconnect, server choice, bitrate, VPN/security software, and network route |
| OBS cannot connect to the expected YouTube event | Wrong event, stream URL, or stream key | Match OBS credentials to the event in Live Control Room; replace a compromised key |
| VLC playlist does not load or loop | Unavailable playlist media, missing VLC installation, or source configuration | Playlist entries, VLC installation and architecture, Loop Playlist, and visibility |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded video looping on a YouTube channel without leaving OBS or a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs the loop from the cloud rather than from your OBS media source. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos and YouTube streams, not camera-based live broadcasting. Start with StreamNeo’s free first day.
