To avoid unintended black bars, set your encoder’s output canvas and stream resolution to 16:9, and make sure each playlist video is framed for that same shape. YouTube recommends avoiding padding or black bars embedded in the video itself. If bars are already part of a source file, changing the stream resolution alone will not remove them; reframe or crop that source, or choose an appropriate fit/fill option in your encoder.
What causes black bars on a YouTube Live stream?
Black bars can come from either the video file or the encoder’s handling of it. A source may contain black pixels along its edges, or an encoder may add padding when placing a video into a canvas with a different aspect ratio. YouTube’s computer player uses a standard 16:9 aspect ratio but adapts to videos with other aspect ratios; YouTube advises creators to avoid adding padding or black bars directly to the video. YouTube Help: Video resolution & aspect ratios.

- Bars baked into the source: They are part of the image. A 16:9 stream output does not erase them.
- Bars added by scaling or padding: The encoder is fitting a differently shaped source into its output frame, or adding space around a source.
- Mixed playlist formats: Items with different shapes or dimensions may be scaled differently. The result depends on the encoder and its source/layout settings.
Choose a 16:9 output resolution
Set both the encoder’s output canvas and the resolution sent to YouTube to a 16:9 size the source and encoder can sustain reliably. YouTube lists these standard 16:9 resolutions, among others:
| Resolution | Common label | Aspect ratio |
|---|---|---|
| 1920 × 1080 | 1080p | 16:9 |
| 1280 × 720 | 720p | 16:9 |
| 2560 × 1440 | 1440p | 16:9 |
| 3840 × 2160 | 2160p / 4K | 16:9 |
Other 16:9 dimensions listed by YouTube are 7680 × 4320, 854 × 480, 640 × 360, and 426 × 240. These are format options, not a requirement to stream at the highest resolution. Use a setting your source, encoder, and upload connection can support consistently. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. Prepare every playlist item for the frame
Check whether bars are in the file
Preview each source file before building the playlist. If the picture itself has black strips at the sides or top and bottom, decide whether to crop/reframe it or keep the whole image with bars. Cropping can remove parts of the picture, so check faces, captions, logos, and other edge content before using it.
Decide how non-16:9 clips should appear
For clips that do not match the 16:9 output, the encoder may offer a fit-style option that preserves the whole image with empty space, or a fill/crop-style option that fills the frame while cutting off some edges. The control names and whether they apply per source, globally, or across transitions vary by encoder; consult that product’s current documentation rather than assuming a particular menu or behavior.

Prevent unnecessary padding
If a source already matches 16:9, check that the encoder is not placing it inside a smaller area with extra padding. Inspect the actual preview, not just the project’s canvas dimensions. For playlists with varied material, check transitions too: a setting that looks right for one clip may not work for the next.

Set up and test the YouTube Live feed
- Choose an encoder. YouTube supports software encoders and standalone hardware encoders. The setup and scaling controls depend on the one you choose. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Configure the frame. Set the output canvas and stream resolution to a suitable 16:9 size, then configure scaling for any playlist items that are not 16:9. Verify that no padding is being added unintentionally.
- Get the stream key in YouTube Studio. YouTube uses the stream key configured in Studio to identify and accept the encoder’s feed. Enter it in the corresponding encoder setting; treat the key as confidential. Guidance: Manage live stream settings.
- Preview the entire playlist. Check each item in the encoder preview and YouTube Live Control Room. Pay special attention to clips with different aspect ratios, dimensions, or baked-in bars.
- Run a test before going public. Use a private or unlisted test when appropriate. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” YouTube encoder guidance.
- Monitor the live stream. During the broadcast, check the Live Control Room preview, stream health, picture, and audio, and review any error messages. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring.
Troubleshoot black bars and inconsistent playlist framing
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Bars remain even though the stream output is 16:9 | The source file may contain the bars as part of its picture. | Inspect the original file. Reframe or crop it if you need the image to fill the frame, and verify that important edge content remains visible. |
| A 16:9 clip has bars only in the stream | The encoder may be adding padding, or the source may be placed at a smaller size within the canvas. | Review the source scaling and canvas settings in the encoder, then compare its preview with the Live Control Room preview. |
| Some playlist items fill the frame while others have bars | The playlist contains different aspect ratios, or scaling is applied differently between items. | Check each clip and its scaling behavior. If available, set framing per source; verify transitions and consult the encoder’s current documentation. |
| The preview looks correct but the live result does not | The encoder preview and outgoing stream may not represent the same output or scaling stage. | Test the complete outgoing feed in YouTube Live Control Room before the public broadcast, and check the live preview and stream health. |
| The frame is full, but subjects or text are cut off | A fill/crop choice is cutting off the source edges. | Use a framing choice that preserves the needed content, or re-edit the source for 16:9 instead of forcing a crop. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the playlist to keep running without leaving an encoder computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded material from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera.
