To export a screen recording in another format, use the recorder’s remux or export option, or import the file into a video editor and export it in a format that suits where you’ll play, upload, or edit it. MP4 is a common compatibility choice, but the container alone does not guarantee compatibility: the video and audio codecs inside it matter too. For OBS, a resilient workflow is to record in MKV and remux to MP4 afterward; in Clipchamp, an original screen recording may download as WebM, while an edited project exports as MP4.
Choose a format for the next step
MP4, MKV, MOV, and WebM are containers: they package video and audio streams. A codec determines how those streams are encoded. Two files with the same extension can therefore behave differently in an editor or player, and changing a file’s name from .mkv to .mp4 does not convert it. Check the destination app’s accepted containers and codecs before exporting, particularly for a long recording or a required delivery specification. OBS explains supported audio/video format combinations, and Microsoft lists Clipchamp’s supported input video containers.

| What you need | Practical choice | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A recording that can survive an unexpected stop, then be shared or edited | Record in MKV in OBS, then remux to MP4 if needed | This is an OBS workflow; other recorders may handle interrupted files differently. |
| Common web playback or upload | MP4 | Confirm the destination accepts the codecs in the file, not just the .mp4 extension. |
| Editing in a particular application | Use a container and codecs accepted by that editor | OBS notes fragmented MP4/MOV may be suitable for common editors or upload platforms; verify the editor’s current requirements. |
| A Clipchamp screen recording for an edited project | Import the capture and export the finished project as MP4 | The downloaded capture may be WebM; the finished project export is MP4. |
| A specific delivery resolution | Choose an available resolution in the editor’s export options | Choices depend on the application, account, and plan. |
Export or convert an OBS recording
Record to MKV for resilience
- In OBS, open Settings > Output and review the recording settings.
- Choose MKV as the recording format when protection against an unexpected interruption matters. OBS recommends MKV because an ungraceful stop is less likely to corrupt the entire recording.
- Record as usual. The resulting file is MKV; some editors may support it less well than MP4.
Remux the recording to MP4
If the finished recording needs to be MP4, use OBS’s built-in remux option to convert the non-MP4 recording. This is a remux workflow, rather than renaming the file extension. Consult the current OBS Standard Recording Output Guide for the remux controls in your installed version. OBS also describes fragmented MP4/MOV as an option for users seeking compatibility with common editing software or upload platforms; confirm the target app supports the specific codecs used.

Turn the capture into an MP4 project
- Open or import the screen recording in Clipchamp. Microsoft says the downloaded screen-recording copy may be WebM, depending on the default settings.
- Edit the recording if needed, then select Export to save the finished project as MP4. The capture file and the edited export are different outputs.
- Choose among the export options available to your account. Microsoft’s Clipchamp documentation lists 480p SD, 720p HD, 1080p HD, and 4K UHD; availability depends on account type and plan. The documented finished-project export is MPEG-4 (.mp4) at 30 fps. Check the current options in Clipchamp because product settings and plan eligibility can change.
Clipchamp lists MP4, MOV, WebM, AVI, DIVX, 3GP, WMV, VOB, and MKV as supported input video containers. Some files may be converted before use, which can take longer. Container support does not guarantee every codec combination will import successfully. See Microsoft’s screen-recording instructions, Clipchamp’s export-format details, and its supported video formats list.

Troubleshoot a failed import or export
- The file will not import: Check the codec and whether the file is intact, not only its extension. Clipchamp supports the listed containers, but some files may need conversion before they can be used.
- The MP4 is still rejected: MP4 identifies a container, not a guaranteed codec combination. Check the destination’s supported video and audio codecs, then export using an accepted combination.
- The OBS recording is MKV but the editor expects MP4: Remux it through OBS’s built-in option instead of renaming the extension.
- The recording is WebM but you need an MP4 deliverable: In Clipchamp, import the capture and use Export for the finished project.
- A resolution option is missing: Export resolutions in Clipchamp depend on account and plan. Check the options available to your account rather than assuming every plan can export at 4K.
- A conversion takes a long time: Clipchamp may convert some supported input files before use. Allow for that processing time, especially with larger recordings.
