To trim a video that is already on your YouTube channel, use YouTube Studio on a computer: open Content, select the video, choose Editor, then use Trim & cut. Adjust the blue selection to keep a range, or choose New cut to remove a section from the middle. Preview carefully before saving: YouTube says saved Editor changes cannot be undone with Revert to original.
Trim an uploaded video in YouTube Studio
This workflow changes an existing upload rather than making you publish a replacement. YouTube says the video URL, view count, and comments remain the same after the edit. Its documented feature applies to videos shorter than six hours.

- Open the video in Studio. Sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer, choose Content from the left menu, then select the video you want to change.
- Open the editor. Choose Editor from the video’s menu.
- Choose the type of cut. Select Trim & cut. To shorten the beginning or end, adjust the blue box so it covers the footage you want to keep. To remove a section from the middle, choose New cut and mark the portion to remove; YouTube’s interface shows the cut area in red.
- Set precise points if needed. You can enter timestamps instead of relying only on dragging the handles. Preview the proposed edit to check the cut points and how the remaining sections join.
- Review before saving. You can undo an individual cut while editing or discard pending changes. When the preview is right, save the edit and allow Studio to process it.

- Length: YouTube Help says the video must be shorter than six hours for this trimming feature.
- Views and channel status: YouTube says some unedited videos with over 100,000 views may not allow saved edits, apart from face blurring. The stated restriction does not apply to channels in the YouTube Partner Program. Because the guidance says “may,” check the editor for your specific video rather than assuming every high-view upload is blocked.
- Saved edits: As of June 2025, YouTube says changes saved in Studio Editor cannot be undone with Revert to original. Keep a separate copy of the source file if you might need the untouched version, and check every cut in preview before saving.
- Ownership and permission: These instructions concern editing your own upload. They do not grant permission to download, trim, or republish someone else’s video.
Which trimming tool should you use?
The right choice depends on whether the video is already uploaded and how much editing you need. YouTube Studio handles targeted fixes to an existing upload; a desktop editor is more suitable when you want a broader timeline workflow before uploading.

When a desktop editor makes more sense
Use a desktop editor when the change is more than a quick correction to an uploaded file—for example, when you need a fuller timeline workflow or want to arrange a more involved edit before publishing. DaVinci Resolve and CapCut Desktop are documented options, but the available product materials do not establish that one is objectively easier or better for every creator. Choose by the workflow and features you actually need, and check each product’s current documentation for its interface and export steps.
