The best capture card for live streaming depends on what you need to send to your streaming software—not just what the card can pass through to your monitor. For portable high-refresh capture, compare Elgato 4K X with AVerMedia Live Gamer ULTRA 2.1; for an internal desktop card, consider AVerMedia Live Gamer 4K 2.1. If 4K60 is your target, AVerMedia Live Gamer Ultra S and Elgato 4K S are relevant options, with different software and portability trade-offs.
These recommendations are based on published manufacturer specifications and one independent roundup, not a common hands-on test of every model. “Up to” modes depend on the source, display, host, operating system, app, and format working together.

How to choose a capture card for streaming
A capture card takes video and audio from a console or gaming PC and sends a copy to a computer for streaming or recording. Passthrough sends gameplay onward to a monitor or TV. Elgato describes the card as sitting between the source and display; the two paths can support different resolutions, frame rates, or color formats.

Choose the capture mode first
Decide whether 1080p60 is enough, whether you need 4K60, or whether you want a higher frame rate. Then check capture and passthrough specifications separately. A card that passes a 4K high-refresh signal to a display does not necessarily capture that same mode in your streaming app.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Check the entire signal chain
For HDMI 2.1 modes, check the console or PC output, card, cables, display, and host connection. A mismatch anywhere can prevent the intended mode. AVerMedia specifies USB 3.2 Gen 2 or above for the Live Gamer ULTRA 2.1; its product guidance also says a display using DSC may limit passthrough to 4K120.
Match the card to your host and software
External USB cards are easier to move between compatible computers and can suit laptop setups, provided the computer has the required port and meets the card’s requirements. Internal PCIe cards are desktop installations; confirm a compatible free slot and operating system before buying. Also verify that the exact capture mode works in the app you plan to use, such as OBS or the manufacturer’s software.

Treat HDR as a specific mode, not a checkbox
HDR passthrough and HDR capture are different capabilities. Compatibility can depend on HDR format, resolution, frame rate, operating system, device, and software. Elgato warns that the 4K X cannot capture HDR at every resolution and frame-rate combination. OBS’s HDR documentation, dated August 2, 2022, says external-source HDR capture requires a device supporting a 10-bit format such as P010, and describes device HDR capture support on Windows. It lists the Elgato 4K X and HD60 X among tested devices. Treat that page as a starting point and check current OBS and device support before relying on a particular setup.
Plan audio and chat routing
Confirm how game audio, microphone commentary, and console party chat will reach the computer. The available route depends on the card and platform. Elgato’s buyer guide identifies analog audio input on the 4K S as a differentiator for party chat, but that does not establish that every console, headset, or app will use the same routing.

Recommended capture cards by workflow

|---|---|---|---|
| External high-refresh capture | Elgato 4K X | Elgato advertises an external USB, HDMI 2.1 card with capture up to 4K144 and high-refresh passthrough. Its buyer guide positions it for capture above 4K60 and play at 120Hz or higher. | Elgato says HDR capture is not available at every resolution and frame-rate combination. Confirm the exact source, app, and mode rather than assuming 4K144 HDR capture. |
| External HDMI 2.1 capture with app-dependent limits | AVerMedia Live Gamer ULTRA 2.1 (GC553G2) | AVerMedia lists capture up to 4K144 using Streaming Center on Windows and up to 4K60 using OBS on Mac. Its HDMI 2.1 passthrough specifications include high-refresh modes. | Capture limits vary by software and OS. Check that the host USB-C connection and HDMI devices support the target mode; AVerMedia says DSC displays may limit passthrough to 4K120. |
| External 4K60 and high-frame-rate options | AVerMedia Live Gamer Ultra S (GC553Pro) | PC Gamer named it its “best overall” pick in its capture-card roundup. The roundup lists capture up to 4K60, 1440p144, and 1080p240. | The “best overall” label is PC Gamer’s editorial judgment, not a universal test result. PC Gamer notes that some advanced 4K functionality depends on Streaming Center software. |
| Portable 4K60 capture | Elgato 4K S | Elgato’s buyer guide says it captures up to 4K60 with HDR and works with Windows, macOS, and iPad. The guide also identifies analog audio input for party chat as a distinguishing feature. | These are manufacturer claims. Verify the precise source, app, and HDR mode you intend to use; the guide does not establish universal compatibility for every combination. |
| Internal desktop capture | AVerMedia Live Gamer 4K 2.1 (GC575) | AVerMedia lists a PCIe Gen 3 x4 interface, HDMI 2.1 input and output, and Windows 10/11 requirements. Its page specifies 4K144 capture in Streaming Center and lists 4K60 among capture modes. | It is not a portable option. Check for a compatible free slot, host specifications, HDMI signal chain, and capture app. AVerMedia says DSC displays may limit passthrough to 4K120. |
The mode limits above come from Elgato, AVerMedia, and PC Gamer product guidance and reporting accessed or updated as described in their respective pages. They are not results from a shared test bench, so use each maker’s supported-mode table for your exact source and software combination.
Set up and verify your capture path
- Write down the target mode. Record the capture resolution and frame rate you want in OBS or vendor software, plus the resolution and refresh rate you want on the display. Include HDR only if both capture and passthrough support the intended format.
- Check the source and display. Confirm that the console or PC can output the target mode and that the monitor or TV accepts it. For HDMI 2.1, ensure the complete source-card-display chain supports the mode; do not infer it from the card’s connector alone.
- Confirm the host connection. For an external model, check the computer’s required USB port and the maker’s host requirements. For the GC575, confirm a free PCIe Gen 3 x4-compatible slot and Windows 10 or 11.
- Install the right capture software. Check the card’s supported app and operating system for the mode you want. The ULTRA 2.1’s published 4K144 capture claim applies to Streaming Center on Windows, while AVerMedia lists up to 4K60 with OBS on Mac.
- Connect and configure the paths. Connect the source to the card’s HDMI input and the card’s output to the display if using passthrough; connect the card to the computer as instructed by its manufacturer. In the streaming app, select the capture card as the video and audio source, then set the desired capture mode.
- Test audio, chat, and HDR independently. Confirm game sound, microphone commentary, and party chat reach the stream as intended. If using HDR, check the capture format and software support rather than relying on a display that appears in HDR.
- Run a short recording or private stream test. Check that the app receives the intended resolution and frame rate, the display behaves as expected, and audio is synchronized before a public broadcast.
Common problems and what to check
- The display shows 4K120 or 4K144, but the stream capture is lower. Passthrough and capture are separate paths. Check the card’s capture-mode table and the app/OS-specific limit; for the ULTRA 2.1, 4K144 capture is tied to Windows Streaming Center, not the listed OBS-on-Mac mode.
- HDR works on the monitor but not in the recording. HDR passthrough does not prove HDR capture. Check whether the card, OS, app, capture format, resolution, and frame rate support HDR together. OBS’s published page describes external HDR capture using a 10-bit format such as P010 and is dated 2022, so verify current compatibility.
- Passthrough drops to 4K120 on a high-refresh setup. AVerMedia says DSC displays may limit passthrough to 4K120 on both the ULTRA 2.1 and GC575. Check the display and signal-chain specifications against the card’s supported modes.
- The target mode is unavailable in the capture app. Confirm the selected app and operating system support it, then check host-port requirements and source output settings. Some modes require vendor software rather than OBS.
- Party chat or microphone audio is missing. Inspect console audio output and the card’s audio inputs, then verify the correct audio sources are selected in the streaming software. Audio routing varies by platform and model; the 4K S’s analog input may be useful for party chat, but confirm your own setup.
- An internal card is not detected or cannot reach its stated mode. Verify the compatible PCIe slot, Windows version, host specifications, and software configuration. A desktop card cannot be moved to a laptop as an external USB device.
Cost and purchase checks
Capture-card prices and availability vary by retailer and region. Elgato’s US 4K X product page displayed $249.99 when accessed on October 3, 2026; treat that as a dated US listing, not a current or worldwide price. Recheck the seller’s regional listing, stock, return terms, and included cables before purchase. AVerMedia recommends using the supplied cables for the ULTRA 2.1; an additional HDMI cable is not a default requirement unless your existing signal chain lacks a suitable one.

- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
Before ordering, compare the exact capture mode you need with the manufacturer’s supported-mode table, not just the headline maximum. This matters especially for high-refresh HDMI 2.1, HDR, and modes that depend on a specific capture app.

A capture card is for bringing a live console or gaming-PC signal into a computer. If your goal instead is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service, not a capture card: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The computer can be off while it runs. See StreamNeo for details.
