You can send a prerecorded 4K video to YouTube Live with FFmpeg by pacing the file in real time with -re, encoding it to a YouTube-compatible format, and sending it to the stream URL with the key from YouTube Live Control Room. For an H.264 stream, YouTube recommends 42 Mbps at 30 fps or 50 Mbps at 60 fps; your connection must sustain the chosen bitrate with room for fluctuation. The command below is a template, not a tested recipe for every file, FFmpeg build, or computer.
Before you start
You need a 4K video file, an FFmpeg build with the encoders you plan to use, a YouTube channel eligible to create a live stream, and a stable upload connection. The file’s dimensions, frame rate, audio tracks, and color format—and your computer’s ability to encode 4K in real time—determine which settings are appropriate.

- Inspect the source file and choose an output frame rate that matches it where practical; avoid unnecessary frame-rate conversion.
- Check that your FFmpeg build includes the video and audio encoders you intend to use. For the example below, that means
libx264and AAC support. - Measure your upload capacity under realistic conditions. A speed test is a guide, not a guarantee of sustained throughput during the stream.
- Plan a test broadcast before the event. YouTube advises: “Make sure that you test before you start your live stream.”
Choose codec, frame rate, and bitrate
YouTube’s live-ingest bitrate recommendations are different from its recommendations for uploading a finished video. The figures below apply to 4K/2160p live ingest and are recommendations from YouTube’s live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Codec | Frame rate | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 30 fps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| H.264 | 60 fps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
These are video bitrates. Audio and other traffic also use upload capacity, and network throughput varies; do not plan on a connection that only just reaches the video bitrate. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live video at up to 60 fps. H.264/AAC is a straightforward compatibility-oriented choice for an SDR example, but it is not the only supported option.

Keyframes and rate control
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Convert the two-second interval into frames using the output rate: use a 60-frame GOP at 30 fps or a 120-frame GOP at 60 fps.
SDR and HDR
For SDR, YouTube’s advanced guidance specifies Rec. 709 color and 8-bit depth. For HDR, it recommends 10-bit H.265/HEVC; AV1 is not supported for HDR in that guidance. Verify that your FFmpeg build, encoder, and chosen transport support the workflow before attempting HDR. The H.264 example below is a compatibility-focused SDR template: it does not preserve or produce HDR.
Audio settings
YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo, its settings list 128 kbps at 44.1 kHz. For 5.1 surround, its advanced guidance lists 384 kbps at 48 kHz, with 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS supported only for AAC. The sample command maps the first audio track if one exists and encodes stereo-oriented AAC settings; change the mapping and audio settings deliberately if your program has multiple tracks or surround sound.

Create the YouTube Live destination
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select the live event and choose the stream setup options appropriate to it.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event into your encoder configuration. YouTube’s setup guidance describes entering the stream URL and key in the encoder.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, shared log, or public repository. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s live settings.
- Use the exact server URL and protocol displayed in Live Control Room. The example below uses RTMP syntax to demonstrate the command structure; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
- YouTube normally detects resolution and frame rate. If you use a custom stream key with manual resolution selection, check that selection against the actual encoded output.
See YouTube’s live streaming settings for the stream URL and key setup, and its live encoder settings for current ingest guidance.
Send the prerecorded file with FFmpeg
FFmpeg processes a file as quickly as it can unless told to pace it. For a file used as a live source, put -re before the input so it is read at its native rate. This template targets 30 fps H.264 at YouTube’s recommended 4K video bitrate for that frame rate:
ffmpeg -re -i "input.mp4"
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-b:v 42M -maxrate 42M -bufsize 84M
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
Replace input.mp4 with your file and replace the example destination with the exact server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Avoid putting a real key in a command that will be saved in shared shell history or logs. Shell behavior differs; use a protected configuration method suitable for your system if you need to avoid placing the key directly in the command line.

Adapt the template to your source
- For 60 fps: change
-r 30to-r 60, change-g 60 -keyint_min 60to-g 120 -keyint_min 120, and set-b:vand-maxrateto50M. Confirm your measured upload connection has adequate headroom. - For an input with no audio:
-map 0:a:0?makes the audio mapping optional. If the file has multiple audio tracks, select the intended track or tracks rather than assuming the first one is correct. - For another codec: YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1. The example’s
libx264option will not use those encoders; confirm your FFmpeg build includes the encoder and that its settings, color format, and transport meet your workflow. - For HDR: do not use the SDR template and describe the result as HDR. Configure a supported 10-bit HDR workflow, with YouTube recommending H.265/HEVC, and verify the actual encoded output.
- For the preset:
veryfastprioritizes encoding speed over compression efficiency relative to slower presets. Whether a computer can encode 4K in real time depends on its hardware and FFmpeg build; no command can establish that without a test.
-bufsize is an encoder rate-control setting; it does not guarantee network buffering or reliable delivery. The command is an editorial template based on YouTube’s published ingest guidance and FFmpeg’s documented RTMP example, not a tested recipe or a promise that every system will accept it unchanged. Consult FFmpeg’s RTMP documentation and confirm the options available in your installed build.

- Start an unlisted or otherwise safe test event with representative audio and motion. Avoid making the first test your public broadcast.
- Watch Live Control Room for stream health messages. Confirm YouTube detects the intended resolution and frame rate, and listen for audio problems.
- Check the encoded output properties if the detected resolution or frame rate is wrong. Compare those properties with the event’s stream settings and any manual-resolution option in the custom stream key.
- Change one setting at a time, then repeat the test. This makes it easier to identify whether the issue came from the source, encoder, network, or event configuration.
- Keep monitoring the encoder and Live Control Room during the event. Playback availability at 4K may not be immediate because processing and playback availability can vary.
Delay and 4K expectations
YouTube’s low-latency optimization is unavailable for 4K/2160p; 4K streams are set to normal latency. If interaction speed matters more than 4K resolution, reconsider the resolution and latency choice in your event settings rather than expecting the 4K stream to use low latency.

| Symptom | Likely checks | What to try |
|---|---|---|
FFmpeg reports that libx264 or AAC is unavailable |
Your installed FFmpeg may have been built without the requested encoder. | Use a build that includes the encoder, or select an encoder present in your build and adjust the command accordingly. |
| YouTube reports unstable stream health or the stream stalls | Upload throughput may fluctuate, the encoder may be overloaded, or both. | Check sustained upload capacity and encoder resource load. Reduce the output bitrate or computational burden if needed, then test again. A brief speed test alone does not establish sustained capacity. |
| Resolution or frame rate is not what you expected | The file may not have the assumed properties, the command may convert its rate, or event settings may constrain detection. | Inspect the actual encoded output, confirm the selected event settings, and review custom-key/manual-resolution options. Change one variable at a time. |
| No audio arrives | The file may have no audio stream, the wrong track may be mapped, or the selected encoder may be unavailable. | Inspect the file’s audio tracks, adjust -map to the intended track, and test with the actual program’s audio. |
| FFmpeg disconnects during a temporary network failure | The basic command does not add automatic reconnection or prove recovery behavior. | First investigate the network and YouTube diagnostics. FFmpeg documents an optional FIFO muxer with recovery attempts, but this is generic behavior, not a YouTube guarantee; verify your build supports it and test failure handling safely. |
FFmpeg’s generic FIFO example uses a recovery wait of one second and packet-dropping behavior on overflow, but those options do not substitute for a reliable connection or establish that recovery will work for a particular YouTube event:
