The concat demuxer plays entries in the order written in its script; looping that script repeats the same shuffled order rather than generating a new one.
How the shuffle works
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer does not randomize a playlist. First create a randomized list of your local files, then write that order into a concat-demuxer script. FFmpeg reads the script from top to bottom. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Build and stream a shuffled list

Choose the source videos
Put the files you want to include in a directory, or otherwise prepare a deliberate list of paths. Check that the files are suitable for concatenation: their streams, codecs, and time bases need to match. If they differ, normalize or re-encode them first.

Randomize the paths
On Linux, a utility such as
shufcan randomize a list. For example, this schematic command collects MP4 paths using null delimiters and shuffles them:#1 Best Overall

find ./videos -type f -name '*.mp4' -print0 | shuf -z > /tmp/shuffled-pathsNull-delimited paths help preserve filenames during this shell step, but they are not themselves a concat-demuxer script. Convert the resulting paths into one
filedirective per entry, quoting and escaping each path according to FFmpeg’s concat-script syntax. Spaces, quotes, and newlines in filenames require particular care. Consult the FFmpeg documentation and test the generated script with your actual filenames. -
Check the concat script
Your generated
list.txtshould contain one validfiledirective for each video, in the randomized order. If a file’s stored duration is wrong and later timestamps are affected, the concat format provides adurationdirective to override it.Rank #2

Get YouTube’s ingest details
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and get the stream key and server/ingest URL for the broadcast. Keep the key private: do not put a real key in a script, screenshot, or public post. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, for live ingest; see its live encoder settings guidance and RTMPS ingestion guide.

Run FFmpeg with the generated list
The command below shows the input shape, not a universal ready-to-run command. Replace the schematic output options and URL with settings that match your files and YouTube ingest details:

ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i list.txt [encoding options] -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL"-f concatselects the concat demuxer, and-safe 0allows absolute paths and paths outside its default safe subset. Use it only when you trust the list you generated. Do not paste a real stream key into a shared script; keep credentials private and use an appropriate local method to supply the complete ingest URL. -
Test and monitor
Try representative files before the broadcast, including clips with movement and audio. Monitor stream health during the live session rather than assuming a command will work with every media set.

Choose output settings that fit your files and connection
Do not pick a bitrate in isolation. YouTube publishes recommended bitrate ranges by resolution, frame rate, and codec in its encoder settings guide; choose settings for your intended output and ensure your upload connection can sustain the bitrate.

- YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, along with AAC or MP3 audio.
- YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Confirm that your chosen codecs and settings are compatible with your stream key and FFmpeg build.
Stream copy avoids re-encoding, but it is appropriate only when the source files have compatible streams and parameters. If stream structure, codecs, or time bases differ, re-encoding or normalization may be necessary. That uses additional processing resources but lets you produce consistent output parameters. The right choice depends on the files and available compute; no single method is best for every playlist.

One shuffled order or a new shuffle every cycle?
If you loop the generated concat input, FFmpeg repeats the entries in the same order. To reshuffle between cycles, an external wrapper or playlist-generation process must create and switch to a newly ordered list. That adds orchestration complexity; plan for how the list will be replaced and whether the stream can tolerate a pause or transition. If a reproducible sequence matters, save the generated list rather than regenerating it.
Troubleshooting
- FFmpeg cannot open a listed file: Check that the path is correct and readable from the FFmpeg process. Verify the concat script’s quoting and escaping, especially for spaces, quotes, and unusual characters. Use
-safe 0only with a trusted list when paths require it. - Concatenation fails or playback glitches at a boundary: Compare the files’ streams, codecs, and time bases. Normalize or re-encode incompatible files and test the resulting set again.
- Later clips have timestamp problems: Check whether a file’s stored duration is accurate; the concat format’s
durationdirective can override it when needed. - The order does not change after a loop: That is expected when FFmpeg is reusing the same script. Generate and switch to a new ordered list for each cycle.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream drops: Check the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and upload capacity against YouTube’s encoder guidance. Verify the ingest URL and key in Live Control Room, then test and monitor the stream.
