A local encoder needs a computer and a dependable internet connection to remain available; a cloud service is an alternative if you do not want equipment running at home. Plan separately for interruptions and archives: YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours, but its guidance does not promise how a longer stream will be archived.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified, the creator must be at least 16, and there must be no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A prepared audio track of thunderstorm ambience and a visual, such as a still image or slow-moving scene. A camera, microphone, dedicated hardware encoder, or audio interface is not inherently necessary for a prepared feed.
- An encoder. YouTube describes encoder streaming as suitable for combining prepared audio and visuals; OBS is among the encoder options referenced in its guidance. Encoder products are not made by YouTube. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Permission for every recording, composition, and visual element used. A natural sound recording is not automatically free of rights restrictions.
If you have never streamed before, enable live streaming ahead of your planned start. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation or the first test until launch time.

Prepare a continuous ambience feed
Build the audio and visual
Use a stable audio file or playlist and a visual that can remain on screen for the intended run. Listen through the full track for abrupt cuts, unwanted silence, clipping, or a loudness change at the loop point. If you join several recordings, make transitions unobtrusive and check that thunder peaks do not distort. These are practical production checks, not YouTube-specific guarantees.

Choose how the feed will keep running
With a local software encoder, the computer, encoder, and network connection must stay available. A power loss, computer restart, software crash, or internet interruption can stop the outgoing feed; YouTube’s general setup guidance does not supply a complete 24/7 failover design. A hardware encoder is another encoder approach, but it still depends on power and connectivity.
Before committing to a long run, decide how you will detect an interruption and restart the encoder or stream. Test your actual setup, including any playlist or loop behavior. Do not assume that a test on a different network or device proves continuous operation.

Set up the YouTube encoder stream
- Activate and test live streaming. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and follow YouTube’s prompts to enable live streaming if needed. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation, and run a test before the intended broadcast.
- Create or schedule the live stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create the stream and locate its stream URL and stream key. The exact screen labels can change; follow the current encoder instructions in YouTube Help.
- Protect the stream key. Paste the server URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not show it in screenshots or share it publicly.
- Configure the encoder. Select the intended video source and ambience audio, then use an encoder profile compatible with your chosen resolution and connection. YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends CBR bitrate encoding and a keyframe frequency of two seconds, with AAC or MP3 audio. Follow YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for resolution-specific values rather than guessing a bitrate.
- Start sending the feed and inspect the preview. Start the encoder, then wait for the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the picture is present and the thunder audio is audible before starting the public broadcast.
- Start the broadcast and verify access. Start the stream in Live Control Room as prompted. Open the watch page from another device or browser to confirm viewers can reach it, then keep monitoring stream health, sound, and image.
- End deliberately when needed. Stop sending content from the encoder and end the stream in Live Control Room as appropriate for the workflow shown in Studio.
Settings and testing that matter
Use settings that match the feed
For a static or slowly changing ambience image, avoid choosing a resolution or bitrate that your upload connection cannot sustain. A steady, clean signal matters more than selecting the highest available setting. YouTube’s general guidance recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and CBR; its resolution and bitrate recommendations may vary by output format, so use the current values on its encoder settings page rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.

Its HLS setup guidance specifies one-to-four-second TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. Run a realistic test
YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, checking the preview, verifying access through channel and watch pages, including on mobile, and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. For this format, listen for a stable ambience bed and inspect the visual after the stream has been running—not only at startup. Keep an eye on encoder status and YouTube’s stream health indicators.
Plan archives for a 24/7 broadcast
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24/7 broadcast exceeds that duration, so do not count on it becoming one complete replay. The cited YouTube guidance does not promise how a stream longer than 12 hours will be archived. If replay availability matters, plan a separate archive strategy and confirm current behavior in YouTube Studio before relying on it.

YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the creator for necessary rights to exploit the live content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing and applicable territory requirements. Read the current YouTube terms and copyright guidance when deciding whether your permissions cover live streaming and any archived replay.

- Prefer recordings, compositions, and visuals you created yourself, or obtain permission that explicitly covers the intended live and archived uses.
- Keep licenses and permissions accessible, including the names of the works and the uses they authorize.
- If you are licensed to use material that may be registered with Content ID, ask the rights holder about allowlisting your channel before going live.
Common problems and fixes

Monetization is a separate question
YouTube’s encoder guidance says creators in the YouTube Partner Program can monetize a live stream. That does not establish that a particular channel or a repetitive or reused ambience format is eligible. Check current YouTube Partner Program policies and your channel’s status; do not treat continuous streaming or the use of an encoder as a monetization guarantee.
