To show a countdown over a YouTube ambience livestream, add a timer to your streaming software—most commonly as an OBS Browser Source—and place it above your video in the scene. A graphic only displays the timer: it does not pause viewers’ playback or end the broadcast. YouTube’s Sleep Timer is a separate control that an individual viewer can use on their own device.
Choose the timer method that fits your stream
For a visible overlay, OBS can load a hosted timer webpage or a local HTML page as a Browser Source. You can also use a timer program that writes its output to a text file, then have OBS display that file as a text source. The right choice depends on whether you prefer a ready-made web graphic or want to keep the timer page or output file on your own computer.

Add a timer graphic in OBS
OBS Browser Source embeds a browser in OBS and can load either a URL or a local file. The OBS Project documents Browser Source for Windows and macOS and through official packages on Linux. Exact labels can vary by OBS version. Its documented default CSS makes the page background transparent, removes margins, and hides overflow, which is useful when the timer should float over the ambience video. OBS Project: Browser Source

Choose between a duration countdown, such as 60 minutes from the time it starts, and a countdown to a specific clock time. For an ambience stream intended to run until bedtime, decide whether viewers need a visible countdown to a planned end or whether they simply need to set their own playback sleep timer. A creator-side countdown graphic does not itself stop the YouTube broadcast.

2. Create or select a timer
For a hosted timer, configure the timer on the service’s website and copy its OBS source URL. TimerBox documents a workflow in which you configure the timer, copy its OBS source URL, then add it as a Browser Source; it says its builder and ten free themes do not require an account or show a watermark. Some other themes are paid, and the service’s features and pricing can change, so check its page before relying on a particular option: TimerBox OBS Countdown Timer & Stream Timer.
For a local timer, have an HTML timer page available on your computer. If you prefer a timer application that writes text to a file, configure the application to produce that file before adding the OBS text source. 3. Add the source to the scene
- In OBS, select the scene that contains your ambience video. In the Sources panel, select + and add a Browser source.
- For a hosted timer, enter its URL. For a local HTML page, enable Local file and select the page. For a text-file timer, add a text source, enable Read from file, and select the timer app’s output file.
- Set the source’s width and height to the size you want the timer area to occupy. For a compact overlay, use a small viewport; for a full-screen countdown slate, use the dimensions of your stream canvas. A hosted URL can contain timer settings, but it may not set the Browser Source dimensions in OBS; TimerBox says to enter those dimensions manually.
- Place the timer source above the ambience video in the Sources stack. Resize and position it in the preview.
4. Make the timer legible
For a floating overlay, keep the page background transparent; use an opaque background if you want a full-screen slate. Preview the scene at the stream canvas size and check that the digits remain readable over both bright and dark parts of the footage. Consider a contrasting text color, outline, or subtle backing panel if the scene makes the digits hard to distinguish.
5. Check what happens on reload
A duration timer may restart from its full duration when its page reloads. TimerBox says its basic duration timer starts over after reload unless resume is enabled. OBS can also unload a source when it is hidden or refresh it when a scene becomes active, so inspect the source’s behavior settings if the timer must keep its original end time. Test the behavior you intend to use rather than assuming the countdown will persist.

6. Test before going live
- Watch the timer run long enough to confirm that the digits change as expected.
- Switch away from the scene and back, then hide and show the source. Confirm whether the timer resumes or restarts as intended.
- Reload the source if that is part of your normal workflow, and check the countdown again.
- Check placement and legibility in the full scene preview, not just the source’s properties window.
YouTube separately recommends testing its Live Control Room away-slate overlay before going live. That is a distinct feature, not a substitute for testing a custom timer source.
Understand YouTube’s viewer Sleep Timer
YouTube Help’s Android instructions describe a viewer-side Sleep Timer: open a video, tap Settings, tap Sleep timer, then choose a duration. This playback control pauses that viewer’s video after the selected time. It does not add an overlay to the creator’s output, and the creator cannot use it to set a timer for every viewer. If you want a timer visible in the broadcast, add a source in your encoder.
Do not confuse a countdown overlay with ending the stream
A timer graphic only displays information. It does not terminate a YouTube livestream when it reaches zero. If your goal is to stop the broadcast at a planned time, arrange to end the stream in your streaming setup or YouTube Live Control Room.
