To make a 24/7 rain ambience stream with distant city traffic, use audio you recorded yourself or have licensed for continuous livestreaming and replay, pair it with an original or licensed visual, and send it to YouTube through OBS Studio or a cloud service. Set the encoder to a bitrate your internet connection can sustain, test the complete scene, and plan for interruptions and recordings—YouTube may not archive a stream that runs longer than 12 hours.
1. Check that your channel can livestream
YouTube currently requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; its help page also says streamers must be at least 16. Check the channel’s Live Control Room before setup because eligibility requirements can change. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements explain the current rules.

2. Create a rain-and-traffic sound bed you have the right to use
Record your own ambience
Original recordings give you control over the mix and help make the stream distinctive. Record rain and distant traffic separately when practical, then balance them so the traffic stays in the background rather than masking the rain. A stereo field recorder is optional: useful if you want to capture your own source audio, but unnecessary if you already have cleared recordings.

Use licensed audio carefully
For third-party sound, confirm that the license explicitly permits continuous livestreaming and use in the archived replay. Keep the license and source records. Permission alone may not prevent an automated interruption: YouTube says a rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams. If the stream stops, YouTube advises checking the Studio dashboard for strikes.

Make the loop feel intentional
A repeated sound loop can work technically, but avoid relying on an unchanging, generic asset if you hope to monetize. Build an authored mix, use audio you are entitled to use, and make the visual and sound choices part of a coherent scene. Copyright compliance and eligibility for monetization are separate: licensed audio does not by itself make a repetitive stream monetization-safe.
3. Build the visual and audio scene in OBS
OBS Studio is a no-cost encoder option. The OBS Project says it has no watermark and can be used commercially without restrictions; that does not grant rights to music, recordings, or visuals added to a scene. OBS Studio overview.

- Install and open OBS Studio, then create a scene for the broadcast.
- Add an original or properly licensed image or video as the visual source. A still image or low-motion scene is sufficient if it suits the ambience.
- Add the rain and traffic audio sources. Set their levels so neither clips, and listen to the full mix on headphones before going live.
- If using a loop, confirm that the transition back to the start is smooth and that the audio does not cut abruptly. Test any long file or playlist from beginning to end where possible.
- Use OBS’s audio meters and preview to verify that sound is reaching the stream. Keep the scene simple enough to run reliably on your computer.
4. Create the YouTube broadcast and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a live broadcast. Check that the intended visibility, title, and other broadcast details are correct.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown by YouTube into OBS under Settings > Stream. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Use RTMPS when available; YouTube recommends it. In OBS, select the matching YouTube service or enter the server information provided by YouTube, then apply the stream key.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room for incoming video, audio, and stream health before making the broadcast public.
Labels and layout can change in YouTube Studio, so use the current Live Control Room fields rather than relying on an old screenshot or saved setup.
5. Choose an encoder quality your upload can sustain

| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate | Keyframe interval |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds |
Use constant bitrate (CBR), which YouTube recommends, and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Start with the resolution and bitrate your upload connection can hold steadily, not simply the highest setting available. A speed test is a useful initial check, but it does not replace testing the actual stream under the conditions in which you will run it.
720p or 1080p?
For a mostly static ambience visual, stable delivery generally matters more than extra detail. Choose 720p/30 if your upload or computer struggles at 1080p/30; choose 1080p/30 only when your connection and encoder handle it without persistent drops. The listed bitrate applies to video encoding recommendations; leave room for audio and network variation rather than treating the number as your entire internet requirement.

- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
6. Test the stream and monitor it
- Run a private or otherwise limited test with the same audio, motion, resolution, and encoder settings planned for the public stream.
- Listen on another device and verify that the rain and traffic are balanced, synchronized, and free of gaps or clipping.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s dropped-frame indicators while the test runs.
- If dropped frames rise, reduce the bitrate or resolution and test again. OBS notes that dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot maintain.
- Check the broadcast after launch rather than assuming a successful preview means the stream will remain healthy indefinitely.
See OBS’s dropped-frames network troubleshooting for connection-related causes. A stream can also stop because of a rights issue, so check YouTube Studio for notices as well as encoder and network status.

A 24/7 broadcast needs a recovery plan, not just a working start button. Keep the source audio and visual files locally, check stream health regularly, and decide how you will restart the encoder or broadcast if the computer, power, or connection fails.

Do not rely on YouTube as the only recording
YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours and recommends keeping a local recording backup. It warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. This is an operational threshold, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will archive successfully. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.
If preserving replays matters, record locally and consider using shorter broadcast segments rather than assuming one continuous 24/7 event will produce a complete replay. Confirm the current behavior in your channel’s Live Control Room; segmenting can make archives easier to manage, but it interrupts the continuity of a single broadcast.
8. Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Wrong or outdated server/key, or encoder not started | Compare OBS stream settings with the current URL and key in YouTube Studio. Reset an exposed key and update OBS. |
| Video stutters or dropped frames increase | Unstable upload or bitrate too high for the connection | Reduce bitrate or resolution, use a wired connection if practical, and repeat a representative test. Review OBS’s dropped-frame guidance. |
| Audio is missing or too quiet | Wrong source, muted mixer channel, or incorrect levels | Check the OBS audio source and mixer meters, then listen to a test from a separate device. |
| The stream is interrupted or stops | Possible connection, encoder, or copyright issue | Check OBS logs and YouTube stream health; inspect Studio notifications and strikes. Confirm the audio’s license and Content ID allowlisting status with the rights owner. |
| No complete YouTube replay appears | Stream duration exceeded 12 hours or archive did not succeed | Check Live Control Room and local recordings. Do not treat a 24/7 YouTube archive as your sole backup. |
