If you will not use it in that time, refrigerate it immediately and use it within 24 hours. Once a feeding begins, use the bottle within one hour and discard whatever remains. These U.S. CDC limits apply to prepared formula; follow the product label for preparation and product-specific directions.
Prepared formula: the two clocks to remember
| Situation | What to do | Time limit |
|---|---|---|
| Prepared bottle, feeding has not started | Use it at room temperature or refrigerate it immediately if it will not be used soon. | Use within two hours of preparation at room temperature; if refrigerated promptly, use within 24 hours. |
| Feeding has started | When feeding ends, throw away formula left in the bottle. Do not refrigerate it for another feeding. | Use the bottle within one hour after feeding begins. |
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) gives these time limits for prepared infant formula. Refrigeration is for an unused bottle; it does not reset or extend the one-hour limit once feeding begins. CDC: Infant Formula Preparation and Storage

How to refrigerate a bottle prepared ahead
- Prepare formula according to the container instructions. Product directions matter, including the correct water-to-formula ratio and handling for that type of formula.
- Refrigerate it immediately if you do not expect to begin feeding within two hours of preparation. Do not leave it out for two hours and then put it away for later.
- Check the refrigerator temperature. Keep it at or below 40°F (4°C). If the controls do not display the actual temperature, the FDA recommends checking with an appliance thermometer.
- Use the refrigerated formula within 24 hours of preparation. A cold refrigerator does not extend this limit. FDA: Refrigerator Thermometers—Cold Facts about Food Safety
Why you should discard formula left after a feeding
Once a baby drinks from a bottle, saliva can enter the remaining formula and allow bacteria to grow. Throw away whatever is left when the feeding ends; do not save it in the refrigerator or offer it at the next feeding. CDC’s instruction is: “Throw out any infant formula that is left in the bottle after feeding your baby.” CDC: Infant Formula Preparation and Storage

Opened powdered formula
Store the open powder container in a cool, dry place with its lid tightly closed—not in the refrigerator. Check the label for how long the product may be used after opening. CDC says most powdered formulas should be used within one month of opening, but the manufacturer’s directions control for the specific product. This opening limit applies to the powder container, not to a prepared bottle. CDC: Infant Formula Preparation and Storage

Liquid concentrate and ready-to-feed products
Directions may differ for opened liquid products. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ HealthyChildren.org says to cover and refrigerate an opened container of ready-to-feed formula or liquid concentrate, and prepared formula made from concentrate, and discard it after 48 hours if unused. Follow the label for the product in hand and distinguish those product-specific directions from CDC’s general 24-hour guidance for prepared infant formula. Taking a bottle on an outing
CDC’s general guidance still applies to prepared formula away from home: use it within two hours at room temperature, and once feeding begins, use the bottle within one hour and discard leftovers. An insulated carrier does not establish a longer safe storage window; do not rely on one to extend these limits. CDC: Infant Formula Preparation and Storage

Warming a bottle safely
Formula does not need to be warmed. If you prefer to warm it, the FDA advises using a warm-water method, such as placing the bottle in warm water, and checking the temperature before feeding. Never microwave a bottle: uneven heating can create hot spots that may burn a baby’s mouth. FDA: Handling Infant Formula Safely: What You Need to Know

Powdered infant formula is not sterile. CDC identifies infants younger than two months, babies born prematurely, and infants with weakened immune systems as groups for whom extra precautions matter. Follow current CDC preparation guidance and the formula’s instructions, and ask the infant’s clinician what is appropriate for the baby’s individual circumstances; a single preparation method should not be assumed necessary for every infant.
