No. Approving or saving an Intune Windows quality update policy authorizes deployment; it does not synchronously install the update on every assigned PC. The device must receive and process policy, scan for updates, and determine that an applicable update is available. Installation and any required restart are separate steps.
What approval does—and does not do
Intune acts as the control plane for approving update content. Microsoft says Intune sends policy details to Windows Autopatch, which determines the approved content; devices then obtain approved updates through Windows Update and apply them according to Windows Update client policies. Approval therefore makes an update eligible for deployment rather than issuing an instant, all-device install command. Microsoft’s Windows updates overview describes this workflow.

There is no single guaranteed install time after approval. A device needs connectivity, a successful update scan, communication with the service, and time for cloud processing. The update also has to apply to that device: Windows Update checks its state and selects applicable content, so a device that already has the update—or a newer applicable one—will not reinstall the older version.
Choose the right deployment method
| Method | Best for | What it changes | What still affects timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quality update policy | Orchestrated deployment of routine quality updates | Approves and organizes deployment; it does not make installation synchronous. | Policy processing, scans, connectivity, applicability, and client settings. Microsoft |
| Update ring | Ongoing Windows Update client behavior | Controls settings such as deferrals, deadlines, automatic updates, active hours, notifications, and restart experience. | Configured client behavior and deadlines. With “Notify download,” users can choose when to download and install; if they take no action, installation waits until the configured deadline. Microsoft |
| Expedite policy | A specific supported quality update that needs faster deployment than routine servicing provides | Temporarily overrides deferrals for the selected update. | The next scan and service communication, connectivity, cloud processing, and whether the update applies. It is not Microsoft’s recommended method for normal monthly servicing. Microsoft |
How to expedite a quality update
- Confirm the need and eligibility. Use expedite for a supported update that warrants faster deployment, not as the default monthly servicing workflow. Check that the target devices are eligible and can reach Microsoft update endpoints.
- Create an expedite policy in Intune. Select the supported quality update to target and assign the policy to the intended device group. The policy targets one update, but Windows Update may install a newer applicable update if it supersedes the selected one and is available at check-in.
- Allow the device to check in and scan. Deployment does not start at the moment you save the policy. Microsoft says the device begins after its next update scan and service communication. Its guidance notes that start time depends on “the device internet connectivity, its scan timing, whether communication channels to the device are functioning, and other factors like cloud-processing time.” See Microsoft Learn’s expedite guidance, dated March 3, 2025.
- Manage the restart separately. Expedite settings can give users a restart window: they may restart, schedule a restart, or let Windows choose a time outside active hours. If they miss the deadline, Windows can restart during working hours. Microsoft documents the restart behavior.
Installation and restart have different deadlines
With deadline policy configured, updates are downloaded and installed as soon as they are offered, while the restart is managed separately. For a quality update, the deadline countdown begins when the client discovers the update in a scan; the grace-period countdown begins when the device reaches pending restart. Microsoft defines the effective deadline as the later of the discovery time plus the configured deadline, or the time a restart is required plus the grace period. When that effective deadline arrives, Windows forces a restart regardless of active hours. Microsoft’s Windows compliance deadline documentation explains the calculation.

Microsoft’s current recommended starting values are a 1-day quality update deadline and a 2-day feature update deadline. These are recommendations, not guarantees of immediate installation. Scan, download, or installation deferrals in other policies—and the applicable Windows version—can affect the experience. Users may be prompted and may defer, reschedule, or restart immediately depending on how close the deadline is. Microsoft’s deadline guidance covers these settings.

For Autopatch-backed Intune feature, quality, and driver update policies, Microsoft lists Intune enrollment, Microsoft Entra join or hybrid join, access to Microsoft update endpoints, and an applicable Windows Autopatch entitlement among the general prerequisites. Entra-registered devices are not supported for those policy types; management for them is limited to Windows Update client and update ring policies. If an assigned quality update policy is not behaving as expected, verify the device’s join state and the tenant’s licensing. Microsoft’s Intune overview lists the requirements.
