To store Bitcoin securely in a self-custody wallet, keep only the amount you need for routine payments in an internet-connected wallet, protect the recovery phrase offline, and make sure you can restore access if a device is lost. Self-custody means you control the keys—and take responsibility for securing them. There is no central authority that can reverse a Bitcoin transaction or restore access if the keys and recovery information are permanently lost.
Choose storage based on how often you need access
A hot wallet runs on an internet-connected phone or computer. It is convenient for everyday payments, but malware or a compromised device can put funds at risk. Bitcoin.org recommends keeping only small amounts on such devices and storing savings in a safer environment; it does not set a universal percentage or dollar threshold.

Cold storage keeps keys offline. A hardware wallet is one way to do this, and may reduce exposure to computer vulnerabilities. It is not a complete security plan: if the device is lost or damaged, you still need a valid backup to recover the wallet.
Some people use both: a hot wallet for routine spending and cold storage for savings. Choose a setup that fits your transaction frequency, technical comfort, and ability to protect recovery information. No option eliminates the need to verify transactions and preserve backups.

More advanced options
- Offline-computer signing: An offline computer holds and signs with the keys; a connected computer prepares unsigned transactions and broadcasts signed ones. This limits a compromised connected computer’s ability to spend funds, but adds complexity and requires careful handling of removable media and transactions.
- Multi-signature: Spending requires approvals from multiple independent keys. This can reduce reliance on a single key or location, but it adds recovery and coordination demands. It is not automatically safer for a novice, and it does not prevent mistakes in setup or operation.
Protect the recovery phrase and make a usable backup
A recovery phrase—also called a seed phrase or mnemonic—is a sequence of words used to restore a wallet. Anyone who obtains it may be able to access the corresponding bitcoin, so treat it as a secret with the same care as the keys themselves.
- Keep the phrase offline and private. Do not put it in a photo library, cloud drive, email, or message thread, and never give it to support staff or anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
- Write or otherwise record the backup carefully, then store it in a secure physical location. Consider more than one location so a single incident does not destroy every copy.
- Use durable storage where appropriate. A physical backup medium can help protect against some kinds of damage, but it does not stop someone from finding or stealing the phrase.
- Check the wallet maker’s current backup and recovery instructions. Many modern deterministic wallets can be restored from one phrase, but do not assume it preserves labels, settings, all wallet metadata, or a nonstandard recovery setup.
Wallet-file backups and recovery phrases may preserve different information. Bitcoin Core’s guidance says periodic wallet backups can preserve metadata such as labels, and warns that some wallet changes may require a new backup. Follow the specific wallet’s instructions rather than assuming one backup method covers everything.

If you keep an encrypted backup on a network-connected device, Bitcoin.org recommends encryption, while warning that connected devices remain vulnerable to malicious software. A password can protect an encrypted wallet or device from some access, but it cannot stop keylogging malware. Choose a strong password you can recover when needed: Bitcoin.org warns that a forgotten password can lead to permanent loss and that Bitcoin offers few password-recovery options. Keep the password recovery method secure and separate enough that one incident does not expose both it and the wallet backup.
Reduce the chance of theft and irreversible mistakes
Bitcoin transactions are irreversible. Before sending, verify the entire destination address, not just its first or last characters: clipboard malware can replace a copied address without making the change obvious.

- Trusted by 6 million users worldwide - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets
- Ignore unsolicited wallet-support messages, recovery offers, and requests for remote access. Bitcoin.org says no legitimate support representative will ask for your seed phrase or private key, and warns that guaranteed recovery offers are scams.
- For a hardware wallet, buy from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller. Check the packaging, and let the device generate its own seed during setup. Do not load funds onto a device with a prewritten seed or share your phrase with anyone claiming to verify or recover a wallet.
- Keep wallet software and the surrounding phone or computer updated. Updates may include security and stability fixes, but they do not replace safe backups or protect against every form of malware.
Make recovery possible after loss or incapacity
Know how to restore your own wallet before you need to do it under pressure. A trusted person should also have a safe plan for what to do if you die or become unable to act. Bitcoin.org warns that funds may become inaccessible to heirs if nobody knows how to locate wallet backups. Leave enough instructions to make recovery possible without exposing the secret to routine access.

- Control: Confirm who controls the keys and whether you depend on a service provider.
- Exposure: Know whether an internet-connected device can access the keys or sign transactions.
- Recovery: Identify exactly what restores the funds if a phone, computer, or hardware wallet is lost, and what information a recovery method does not preserve.
- Single points of failure: Consider whether one phrase, device, person, or physical location could enable theft or make recovery impossible.
- Operational burden: Be able to verify transactions, maintain backups, and follow the recovery procedure reliably.
Bitcoin.org’s hardware-wallet directory includes BitBox02 as an example and describes its offline backup options. That listing is not a product test or endorsement. Before choosing a model, check current Bitcoin support, availability, backup instructions, security documentation, and seller authorization.
