What is the release date for State of Decay 3?
Undead Labs’ September 22, 2026 announcement says State of Decay 3 is in alpha and remains targeted for release in 2027. That is a target, not a confirmed launch date. The studio also said it was continuing toward a previously announced closed-beta milestone before the end of 2026. Undead Labs’ announcement does not specify when the beta or full release will begin.

Xbox Wire reported on August 26, 2026, that closed beta playtests were planned before the end of that year and that registration was open for a chance to be selected. Registration does not guarantee an invitation. Xbox Wire’s playtest announcement also described feedback from alpha testers; that report is not a promise that every player can access the test.

What has been announced about State of Decay 3?
The available details describe the game’s planned design, not a final feature list. In a June 7, 2026 Xbox Wire interview, Undead Labs Creative Director Kevin Patzelt outlined a solo experience and shared-world co-op for up to four players. Players sharing a save are meant to be able to make progress asynchronously, build facilities and develop as many as three bases. The interview presents these as announced plans while the game is in development.

A larger playable space, with a specific comparison
Patzelt described the playable space as “about 4 times the size of a single State of Decay 2 map.” The comparison is to one map, not the combined area of all of State of Decay 2. He also said the area would be open to a player from the moment they join. These are developer descriptions, not independently measured specifications.
Enclaves, Plague Nests and combat
Enclaves are NPC survivor groups players are expected to be able to work with, befriend, ally with and recruit. Plague Nests are described as dynamic hubs of enemy encounters that respond to player actions and may behave differently between runs. The interview also describes a second melee attack button compared with State of Decay 2.

Crafting and scavenging
Undead Labs has described a “maker culture” theme, weapon alteration and a risk-and-reward loop in which dangerous Plague Nest areas may contain better loot. These details communicate the intended direction; they should not be treated as a complete or final inventory of systems.
Which platforms are planned for State of Decay 3?
Official Xbox material has listed Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, cloud, Steam, PlayStation 5 and Game Pass. The current Xbox product listing names Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11 and says day-one Game Pass availability is planned. Undead Labs’ September 2026 statement reaffirmed Xbox, Game Pass, PC and PlayStation. Storefront and platform details can change before release, so check the current listing when choosing where to play.

Undead Labs also announced on September 22, 2026, that it had completed its separation from Xbox and become an independent, employee-owned studio. The announcement reiterated the planned Xbox, Game Pass, PC and PlayStation availability; it did not say that the change altered the platform plan.
What can you play in State of Decay 2 now?
State of Decay 2 originally released in 2018, and its official page identifies State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition as a 2020 remaster. The game centers on scavenging, recruiting survivors and managing a community while facing Blood Plague threats. It offers several map environments, combat with melee and ranged weapons, and adjustable difficulty, scarcity and danger. The official game page links to Steam and Xbox.

Co-op and included modes
Four-player co-op lets friends join a community for scavenging and combat. Juggernaut Edition also includes Heartland, a story-driven return to Trumbull Valley, and Daybreak, a four-player mode built around surviving waves. These give players distinct ways to spend time in the existing game while the sequel remains in development.

Should you play State of Decay 2 or wait for State of Decay 3?
Choose State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition if you want a State of Decay community-survival game now, including its existing co-op, multiple maps, Heartland and Daybreak. Wait for State of Decay 3 if its announced shared-save co-op, larger playable space, multiple bases and responsive Plague Nests are the features you most want. Those plans are not a basis for judging final quality or performance; the sequel is still in development.
