Store NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges upright in a clean, shaded indoor room with stable, moderate conditions. Keep them off floors and away from humidity, sunlight, heat, cold, dust, pests, and pressure from leaning or stacking. Handle the plastic shell, never the edge connector; keep contacts dry, clean only the exterior with a barely damp soft cloth, and inspect battery-backed games for exhausted or leaking cells.
What proper storage protects
A cartridge is more than a plastic shell. Its label, connector plating, circuit board, save-memory components, and (in many games) a coin-cell battery all need different kinds of protection. Dirt or moisture on the edge connector can interfere with loading and can damage the cartridge or console. Light and abrasion can fade or loosen labels. Environmental swings encourage condensation and stress materials, while a leaking battery can corrode a board and destroy battery-backed saves.

Nintendo’s maintenance guidance is conservative: do not keep a Game Boy or Game Pak in a humid place, on the floor, or anywhere it will collect dirt, dust, or lint; do not expose it to extreme heat or cold; and keep moisture and contamination away from the connectors. Museum-style storage adds protection from light, pollutants, pests, dust, and rapid temperature or relative-humidity changes. Together, those rules point to a simple approach: a stable room, shaded upright storage, careful handling, and regular inspection.
Choose a stable storage room
Use an interior room or closet
Choose a room that stays reasonably steady throughout the year. An interior closet or living-space cabinet is usually safer than a garage, attic, damp basement, porch, or shed. Keep cartridges away from windows, exterior walls that experience large temperature changes, radiators, heaters, air-conditioning vents, and appliances that produce heat. Never leave a collection at floor level, where a leak, mop water, flood, dust, or a pet can reach it.

Nintendo specifically warns against humid locations and extreme heat or cold. The warning applies to both the handheld system and its Game Paks, so a cartridge should not be stored in a location that would be unsuitable for the console itself.
Control relative humidity without chasing a magic number
The Game Boy Museum recommends approximately 30–50% relative humidity (RH) for storage. That is collector and museum-handbook guidance, not a Nintendo specification for every cartridge format. The useful lesson is to keep the room in a moderate range and, more importantly, avoid repeated swings. A steady reading slightly outside that band is generally less concerning than a room that alternates between damp and dry conditions.
Place a digital hygrometer near the collection, not directly beside a humidifier, dehumidifier, window, or heating outlet. Check it at different times of day and during seasonal changes. If readings stay high, move the cartridges to a drier room and address the room’s moisture source before adding more storage furniture. Do not put loose desiccant packets inside a sealed container without monitoring; a packet does not correct a persistently damp room and can give a false sense of security.

Block light, dust, and pollutants
Keep cartridges shaded and out of direct sunlight. Sunlight can fade labels and expose plastic to unnecessary heat. A closed cabinet or lidded cartridge case reduces dust on labels, shells, and connectors. Museum storage principles also emphasize limiting airborne particulates, pollutants, pests, and environmental fluctuations. The cabinet should still allow you to inspect the collection; a perfectly sealed box that is opened roughly or traps condensation is not a preservation solution.
Store cartridges upright and supported
Why vertical storage is preferred
Store loose cartridges upright like books, with their broad faces supported. Upright placement keeps the weight of neighboring items off labels and shells and makes it easier to identify a title without rummaging through a pile. The Game Boy Museum specifically recommends upright storage.
Use dividers or a snug row so cartridges remain vertical rather than leaning. A leaning row concentrates pressure on corners and can bow boxes or rub labels. Leave enough room to remove one cartridge by its shell. Do not wedge a cartridge so tightly that you must pull on its label or connector edge.

Avoid tall stacks and unsupported piles
Do not stack loose cartridges in tall horizontal piles. The weight of the pile presses on the lowest labels and shells, and removing a middle item forces you to slide cartridges against one another. If a storage unit requires stacking, keep piles short, level, and supported by a rigid shelf; upright rows are still preferable.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBoxed games need the same restraint. Keep boxes upright where possible, protect them from shelf edges, and avoid placing heavy objects on top. Original packaging is part of the collection and should not be treated as disposable packing material.
Compare practical storage setups
| Storage option | Strengths | Risks and checks | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open shelving | Fast access and easy visual inspection; good ventilation. | Offers little protection from dust, light, pets, and accidental knocks; cartridges must be supported so they do not lean. | A shaded, low-dust room where the collection is handled often. |
| Lidded bins | Reduce dust and light exposure and make a collection easier to move. | Do not place bins on a damp floor; check inside for condensation, crowding, and cartridges rubbing together; avoid leaving them in hot spaces. | Longer-term storage in a stable indoor room, with periodic inspection. |
| Display cases or cabinets | Can combine upright support with protection from light, particulates, and accidental contact. | Glass or clear panels do not block sunlight unless the cabinet is shaded; crowded shelves make inspection difficult. | A display in a room whose temperature and RH are already stable. |
| Individual cartridge cases or sleeves | Separate items, reduce abrasion, and simplify cataloguing and transport. | Cases must fit without bending labels or forcing the shell; inspect for trapped moisture and avoid abrasive interiors. | Valuable, fragile, or frequently transported cartridges. |
Whichever setup you choose, compare it on six practical points: protection from dust and light, resistance to condensation, support against leaning and stacking pressure, ease of inspection, access frequency, and whether original boxes and labels fit without abrasion. A simple upright row in a shaded cabinet can outperform an expensive case placed beside a heater or window.
Handle cartridges without contaminating the connectors
Use the plastic shell as your grip
Pick up a cartridge by the sides or other solid parts of its plastic shell. Keep fingers away from the edge connector. Skin oils, dirt, and moisture can remain on the contacts and interfere with the electrical connection. Keep drinks and damp hands away from the work area.
Nintendo’s warning is explicit: avoid touching the connectors, do not blow on them, and do not allow them to get wet or dirty. Blowing introduces moisture from your breath and can spread dust inside the connector area rather than removing it.
Inspect before every insertion
- Hold the cartridge under bright, indirect light by its shell.
- Look for visible dust, fibers, corrosion, foreign objects, or liquid near the connector.
- Check that the shell is not cracked and that no loose piece can fall into the console.
- If anything is present, set the cartridge aside for cleaning or professional assessment instead of inserting it.
- Insert only when the contacts are visibly clean and completely dry.
This inspection is especially important for cartridges that have been stored loose, transported, or kept in a room with dust or humidity problems.

Clean safely and minimally
Routine exterior cleaning
For ordinary dirt on the shell or label surround, use a soft, clean cloth that is only slightly dampened with water. Wipe gently, then use a dry portion of the cloth and allow the cartridge to dry completely before storage or insertion. Do not soak the cartridge, spray liquid into openings, or leave moisture around the connector.
Nintendo’s Game Pak guidance says not to use benzene, paint thinner, alcohol, or any other solvent. Those chemicals can damage plastics, labels, printed surfaces, or adhesives. A stronger-smelling cleaner is not automatically a safer cleaner.
When the connector looks dirty
Do not improvise with household solvents, abrasive pads, metal tools, or compressed air held close to the connector. If contamination is visible but the cartridge is otherwise valuable or unfamiliar, have it assessed by a technician who routinely works on vintage game hardware. The safe default is to keep the connector dry and avoid adding a chemical or mechanical risk that is harder to reverse than the original dirt.

Never insert a cartridge that is still damp. Drying the exterior is not enough if liquid may have entered the shell; leave it out of service and seek qualified advice.
Inspect battery-backed games before they fail
Why batteries matter
Many save-enabled Game Boy cartridges and other vintage games use a small coin cell to retain battery-backed saves when the system is turned off. Cells eventually become exhausted, which can end the saved data. A damaged or leaking cell can also corrode the circuit board and cause more extensive hardware damage. Nintendo warns that battery leakage can cause injury and damage; the Game Boy Museum identifies aging coin cells as a preservation concern.
There is no reliable universal lifespan figure for every cartridge battery. Age, storage conditions, battery type, and the cartridge’s circuit all vary, so treat an old save battery as an inspection item rather than assuming it has a predictable number of years remaining.

Establish a battery-inspection routine
- Identify cartridges that support internal saves, especially older Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and other battery-backed releases.
- Record the title, system, condition, and whether the game contains saves you need to preserve.
- Inspect the shell for swelling, cracks, staining, or an unusual odor. Do not open a cartridge casually if you are not equipped to work safely.
- If a cell is exhausted, leaking, or surrounded by corrosion, stop using the cartridge and keep it separate from clean games.
- Use an experienced repair technician for a soldered battery replacement or board cleanup. A replacement that is installed incorrectly can erase saves or damage traces.
- After service, test the game and verify that it retains a save before returning it to the collection.
Back up important saves when the hardware and your technical skill make that possible, but do not sacrifice a working board to attempt an unfamiliar procedure. Battery work involves soldering and, in the case of leakage, chemical contamination.
Build a repeatable preservation routine
At every handling session
- Wash and dry your hands, then grip each cartridge by its shell.
- Keep food, drinks, and open containers away from the collection.
- Inspect the connector and shell before insertion.
- Return the cartridge upright to its supported position rather than leaving it on a console, desk, or floor.
Monthly or seasonal checks
- Read the hygrometer and note unusual humidity or temperature changes.
- Look for dust, pests, condensation, light exposure, leaning rows, and shelf pressure.
- Check bins and cabinets for trapped moisture and make sure no cartridge is rubbing against a rough surface.
- Examine battery-backed games for new staining, swelling, corrosion, or loss of save data.
- Rotate a display arrangement if one side of the collection is receiving more light, while keeping the room itself shaded.
A simple inventory with photographs, system, title, box status, and battery notes helps you notice changes. It also prevents unnecessary handling when you are searching for a particular game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prepare cartridges for moving or temporary storage
Before moving a collection, remove cartridges from consoles and let any recently cleaned item dry fully. Keep each cartridge in an upright, supported position so it cannot slide into another. Cushion the outside of a case or bin, not the connector itself, and do not pack so tightly that labels or shells are compressed.
Transport the collection in a climate-controlled vehicle or indoor space. Do not leave it in a parked car, unheated garage, attic, or other location subject to extreme heat or cold. After a move from a colder or warmer environment, allow the closed container to reach room conditions before opening it; this reduces the chance of condensation forming on cold surfaces.
Troubleshoot common storage problems
A cartridge is dusty
Move it to a clean work surface, hold it by the shell, and remove exterior dust with a soft, dry cloth. If dirt is stuck to the exterior, use the slightly water-dampened cloth method and dry completely. Do not blow into the connector.

A game suddenly stops retaining saves
Suspect an exhausted battery, but do not assume the entire cartridge is unusable. Stop repeated testing that could expose the board to further handling, preserve any remaining save data if you have a safe method, and arrange qualified battery service. If corrosion is visible, request board inspection as well as cell replacement.
Labels are rubbing or fading
Separate the affected cartridges, stop stacking them, and move them out of direct light. Use upright supports and a case or cabinet that does not abrade the label. Do not apply household tape, glue, or solvent to stabilize a vintage label.
Answers to common questions
Should vintage Nintendo cartridges be stored vertically?
Yes. Upright, supported storage is the preferred approach for loose cartridges and boxed games because it avoids pressure from tall stacks and reduces leaning and abrasion.
What is the best humidity for NES and SNES games?
The Game Boy Museum suggests roughly 30–50% RH as practical collector guidance. Nintendo does not publish a universal humidity specification for every cartridge system. Keep conditions moderate and stable, and prioritize avoiding damp locations and rapid swings.
Do I need plastic cases for retro cartridges?
No single case is mandatory. A protective case is useful when it keeps a cartridge upright, reduces dust and light, prevents abrasion, and still permits inspection without forcing the shell or label. A shaded, supported cabinet can be sufficient for a collection that is handled carefully.
Can old Game Boy games leak battery acid?
Battery-backed games can develop leaking coin cells. Leakage can damage the board and erase saves, so isolate a suspect cartridge and use an experienced technician for replacement and corrosion assessment. Do not open or solder a damaged battery casually.
Can I clean Nintendo cartridge contacts with alcohol?
Nintendo’s cited Game Pak guidance says not to use alcohol, benzene, paint thinner, or other solvents. For routine care, keep contacts dry and clean the exterior with a soft cloth slightly dampened with water. Have stubborn connector contamination assessed rather than escalating to an unapproved chemical.
