How to Store and Organize Small Screwdriver Bits and Hand Tools

A practical system for storing loose screwdriver bits and full-size hand tools: separate by type and size, choose compartments that fit, label every position and return clean tools to their designated place.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most reliable setup has three parts: separate loose bits by type and size, give handled screwdrivers a rack or partitioned slot, and return every tool to a designated place after use. Use a compartmented case or tray for a portable kit; use a pegboard holder, drawer insert or labeled parts box when your tools live in a workshop. The right choice depends on whether you carry the tools, need to see them at a glance, and have suitable wall or drawer space.

Start by separating bits from handled tools

Small screwdriver bits and full-size screwdrivers have different storage needs. Bits are short, easily mixed and difficult to identify when piled together. Handled screwdrivers are longer and are selected quickly when their handles and tips are visible. Storing both in one undivided container usually creates a search problem and makes it easy to lose a bit under larger tools.

  • Loose bits: place them in individual slots or small compartments, grouped by drive type and then by size.
  • Handled screwdrivers: use a rack, partitioned pouch, pegboard holder or drawer insert that keeps each tool accessible.
  • Small accessories: keep adapters, extensions and other small parts in their own labeled compartments rather than allowing them to occupy bit slots.

Before buying or repurposing storage, lay out every bit and screwdriver you intend to keep. A compartment that is too shallow can let bits spill out; one that is too narrow can make removal difficult. The case or tray should fit the actual collection, not an assumed standard set.

Choose a storage format that fits the way you work

Format Best use What to check before adopting it
Compartmented bit case or tray Loose bits and a compact driver set, especially when the tools travel Confirm that slot dimensions, depth and layout fit your bit shapes and quantities. A useful layout includes a dedicated handle position plus compartments for spare bits and small parts.
Rack or partitioned pouch Full-size screwdrivers that must be selected quickly at a bench or in a portable kit Make sure partitions prevent tips from rubbing against one another and that the pouch closes securely if it will be carried.
Pegboard holder Fixed wall storage for handled screwdrivers arranged by size Allow adequate pegboard and wall space, and place the holder where handles and labels remain visible. A pegboard holder is not a substitute for a small-compartment bit case.
Drawer insert A tool chest or workshop drawer that already has unused space Measure the drawer’s inside width, depth and height, including clearance for the drawer to close. Use partitions for larger tools and smaller sections for bits.
Labeled small-parts boxes Many bits, adapters and other small workshop parts that need inventory control Use clear or readable labels and keep each box in a consistent location so a missing bit is obvious.

Portability, visibility and selection speed are the main trade-offs. A closed case protects a kit during transport but hides its contents until it is opened. A rack or pegboard makes selection fast but occupies a permanent location. Drawer inserts conserve bench and wall space, while labeled boxes handle a larger number of small parts at the cost of more labeling.

Build a portable bit case or tray

1. Empty and inspect the collection

Work on a clear surface and remove every bit, handle, extension and adapter from existing bags or drawers. Wipe away dirt so markings are legible. Set aside damaged or rounded bits rather than mixing them with serviceable ones; a damaged bit can be mistaken for the correct replacement later.

2. Group by drive type

Create separate groups for the drive profiles you actually own, such as cross-point, slotted, hex, star-shaped or security variants. Do not rely on color alone: manufacturers use different colors, and wear can make a color difficult to recognize. Keep uncommon profiles in a clearly marked section instead of scattering them among frequently used bits.

3. Order each group by size

Within each drive type, arrange bits from small to large or by the marking sequence used on your set. Use one direction consistently. If a bit has no visible size marking, compare it with the others before assigning its position and record the identification on the compartment label.

4. Reserve space for the handle and accessories

A compact case works better when the driver handle has a designated position rather than lying across the bit slots. Keep extensions, adapters and small fastener-related parts in separate compartments. This prevents a bulky accessory from covering the bit you need and keeps the inventory count understandable.

5. Test every slot before closing the case

Insert each bit fully, then close and gently move the case. Bits should remain seated without being forced into a slot. If two adjacent compartments allow bits to cross over, leave one empty or use a divider. A layout that looks efficient on a bench can fail when the case is carried vertically.

6. Label for retrieval, not decoration

Label a row or compartment with the drive type and size. Put labels where they can be read while the case is open. If the case is used by several people, add a simple diagram or an inventory list inside the lid so an empty slot identifies what is missing.

Organize full-size screwdrivers for fast selection

Rack storage

A rack keeps handles separated and presents the tips in a predictable order. Arrange the tools by drive type, then by size, with the most frequently used group closest to the normal working position. Leave enough clearance to remove one screwdriver without catching an adjacent handle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Partitioned pouches

A partitioned pouch suits a portable kit or a work area where wall storage is unavailable. Each screwdriver should have its own sleeve or a clearly defined space. Put the heaviest tools toward the bottom or center of the pouch so the case remains balanced when carried. Close the pouch before moving it; open pockets can release tools into a bag.

Pegboard holders

For a fixed workshop, a pegboard holder makes handled tools visible and keeps the bench clear. Arrange screwdrivers by size so the correct tool can be selected without trial and error. Leave a little space between groups rather than filling every hook; an overcrowded holder hides the labels and makes returning tools less reliable.

Drawer inserts

Drawer storage is useful when dust protection and a clear work surface matter more than immediate visibility. Use a shaped insert or dividers that stop tools from rolling. Place screwdrivers in one layer whenever possible, with handles facing the same direction. If tools must be stacked, use a divider so a heavy tool does not press on another tool’s tip.

Set up a fixed workshop in a repeatable order

  1. Measure the available space. Record the usable dimensions of the drawer, cabinet, case or pegboard area before selecting an organizer.
  2. Choose the primary location. Keep frequently used screwdrivers near the main bench. Put specialty bits and rarely used adapters in a secondary labeled box.
  3. Assign zones. Create one zone for loose bits, one for handled screwdrivers and one for accessories. Do not let a general-purpose “miscellaneous” space become the default for everything.
  4. Arrange from common to uncommon. Put the sizes and drive types used most often where they can be reached first, while retaining the same type-and-size order across the rest of the system.
  5. Label shelves, drawers or rows. A label should identify the contents without opening every container. Replace a label when the contents change.
  6. Photograph or sketch the layout. Keep a simple reference inside the cabinet or on the case lid. It helps multiple users return tools correctly and exposes an empty position quickly.
  7. Perform a return check. At the end of a task, compare the open compartments or rack positions with the layout. Put away tools before starting another job.

Keep tools clean and ready for the next job

Cleaning is part of organization, not a separate project. WorkSafe Tasmania advises cleaning tools and keeping them in trays or boxes when they are not in use. Wipe dirt and residue from bits and handles before storage, and allow any damp tool to dry so moisture is not trapped in a closed case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Remove debris from the bit’s driving surfaces before placing it in a slot.
  • Keep oily or dirty accessories separate until they have been cleaned; residue can transfer to neighboring bits and labels.
  • Check that the case, pouch or drawer is free of loose grit that could interfere with seating.
  • Replace a compartment divider that has cracked or no longer keeps bits separate.

Do not use a screwdriver as a pry bar or for another job it was not designed to perform. WorkSafe Tasmania specifically warns against that misuse and recommends using an appropriately sized screwdriver. A correct fit protects the fastener, the tool and the user’s control.

Use storage as a safety control

Storage prevents tools from becoming trip hazards and reduces the chance of selecting the wrong size. Pennsylvania’s hand-tool provision states: “No handtools should be permitted to lie on the floor, ground, or working platform when not in use for any length of time, but should be kept in the proper receptacles or storage places.” That language is a jurisdiction-specific regulatory statement, not a universal rule for every location, but it expresses a sound housekeeping practice.

Keep cases, racks and boxes where they cannot fall onto a work surface. A wall-mounted holder should be securely attached to the intended pegboard or mounting system. In a drawer, prevent organizers from sliding when the drawer opens. For a mobile kit, close the case before carrying it and check that loose bits cannot escape through a damaged latch.

CCOHS gives a direct selection principle: “Store screwdrivers in a rack or partitioned pouch so that the proper screwdriver can be selected quickly.” Quick selection is safer than rummaging through a mixed container because the correct size remains visible and the tool is less likely to be substituted with an unsuitable one.

Match the system to your working pattern

For a mobile repair kit

Use a compact case or tray with a handle position and individual bit compartments. Keep the kit limited to the sizes you routinely carry, then add a labeled reserve section for less common profiles. A partitioned pouch can hold full-size screwdrivers, but loose bits still need smaller separated slots.

For a shared bench

Choose a rack or open drawer insert and use a fixed left-to-right order. Shared users can see which tool belongs in each position, and a missing screwdriver is noticed without opening several boxes. Put the bit case beside the rack rather than mixing bits into the handled-tool storage.

For a small workshop with limited wall space

Use drawer inserts for handled tools and a stack of labeled small-parts boxes for bits and adapters. Measure each drawer first, and reserve one box for uncommon or security bits so they do not interrupt the everyday sequence.

For a larger fixed workshop

Use a pegboard holder for frequently selected handled screwdrivers and labeled boxes or drawer compartments for the bit inventory. Group tools by size and type, and leave enough visible space that adding one new tool does not force a complete rearrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot common organization failures

Bits keep mixing together

The compartments are probably too large, too shallow or missing dividers. Move to smaller slots, reduce the number of bits in each compartment and test the case while it is closed and carried. If a compartment still allows movement, assign it to a larger accessory instead of a loose bit.

You cannot find the right size quickly

Use a consistent order within each drive type and label the row. If markings are hard to read, make a simple inventory card that maps each position. Do not create multiple storage locations for the same size unless one is explicitly marked as a reserve.

The drawer will not close

Measure the organizer and the drawer again, including the height of handles and dividers. Remove stacked tools, reduce the insert’s contents or move tall tools to a rack. Never force a drawer against an organizer that exceeds its clearances.

Tools spill when the kit is moved

Check the latch, hinge and compartment fit. Keep heavy accessories in a secured section and leave no bit resting across two slots. If the case cannot retain its contents when tilted, it is not suitable for transport until the layout or container is changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The rack is overcrowded

Separate frequently used screwdrivers from specialty tools and move the latter to a labeled pouch or drawer. Reassign positions by type and size rather than squeezing additional tools into the existing row; overcrowding defeats the quick-selection purpose of a rack.

Maintain the system with short routine checks

  • After each task: clean the tools, return them to their assigned positions and close any portable case.
  • When a bit is missing: check the last work area, then inspect the case or drawer against its layout before buying a replacement.
  • When adding tools: verify that the new bit fits an existing compartment; if not, add a clearly labeled section instead of creating a mixed overflow pile.
  • Periodically: inspect pouches, dividers, latches, hooks and labels for wear. Repair or replace storage that no longer keeps tools separated.
  • Before shared use: make sure every user understands the type-and-size order and the return location.

An effective organizer is not the one with the most slots. It is the one whose compartments fit your bits, whose rack or pouch keeps handled tools visible, and whose layout you can restore consistently after every job.
