A ROM hack patch is not a game file: it is a set of changes that must be applied to the exact clean ROM revision named by the hack author. Match the patch format to a compatible tool, work on a duplicate, preserve the untouched original, and verify the output checksum when one is provided.
What a ROM patch actually does
IPS, BPS, UPS, XDelta and PPF files generally contain differences between an author’s clean source file and a modified output. They are not complete games and normally will not run in an emulator by themselves. Patching combines the file with your own legally obtained ROM backup and writes a new game file.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The most important rule is exact compatibility. A file can have the right game title and still be the wrong region, revision, header state, trim state, byte order or disc-image layout. A patch made from one byte sequence may fail, silently produce a broken game or appear to work while crashing later when applied to another.
Never patch your only copy. Keep the clean dump in a separate folder, create a working duplicate, and save the result under a new filename. If a patcher offers a backup option, enable it, but do not treat that as a substitute for an untouched original stored elsewhere.

Know which file is which
A safe workspace contains three distinct things: the patch archive or extracted patch, the untouched source ROM, and the output created by the patcher. The source is the exact file the author used as a starting point. The patch is the set of instructions. The output is a new file that should be tested. Keeping those roles separate prevents a common mistake: feeding a previously patched hack, translation or randomizer back into a patch designed for the original release.
Do not assume an archive is itself a ROM. Extract ZIP or 7z files first unless the selected utility explicitly documents archive support. Likewise, do not infer compatibility from a familiar filename. A file named after the right game can still be a different regional release, a later revision or a converted image.
Read the hack’s instructions before opening a patcher
The readme or release notes are part of the patch. Formats do not encode every human requirement, so a program cannot infer all of the author’s assumptions. Record these items before you begin:
- Target system and game title.
- Region, revision and release variant.
- Whether the input must be trimmed, untrimmed, headered or headerless.
- Required source checksum, usually CRC32 or SHA-1.
- Patch format and the specific tool recommended by the author.
- Whether several patches must be applied, and their required order.
- Expected output checksum, if published.
- Any required disc track, image type or byte order.
A release note may also identify a particular dump convention, such as a full-size Nintendo DS image or a Super Nintendo file with a 512-byte copier header. Do not substitute a conversion merely because the filename looks similar.
Why a checksum mismatch matters
Calculate the checksum of the clean working copy when the author supplies one. A mismatch is evidence that you have a different file variant, not an invitation to force the patch. Recheck region, revision, trim state, headers and the dump source.
BPS records checksums for the source, output and patch. A compatible patcher can therefore detect a wrong input and later validate the result. UPS records input and output checksums. IPS has no embedded source checksum, so an IPS program may accept the wrong file without warning; the author’s published checksum becomes especially important. XDelta source verification depends on how the patch was created, so read the release notes rather than assuming every XDelta file performs the same checks.
Checksums identify bytes, not titles. Two files can display the same title in an emulator and still produce different CRC32 or SHA-1 values because of a header, a trim operation or a revision change. Conversely, a matching source checksum is strong evidence that you selected the intended dump, while a matching filename is only a label.

Choose a patcher by the actual format
Use the extension supplied by the author as a starting point, then confirm it in the documentation. Renaming an IPS file to BPS, or changing any other extension, does not convert its format. Delta Patcher’s guide explicitly says it cannot open IPS, BPS, UPS or PPF files, and renaming will not help.
| Patch format | Suitable tool direction | Checks and limitations |
|---|---|---|
| IPS | Flips or another IPS patcher; RetroArch soft-patching is also documented | IPS contains no source checksum. Use the author’s CRC32 or SHA-1 when available. |
| BPS | Flips or another BPS-compatible patcher | Stores source, output and patch checksums, allowing input-mismatch detection and output validation. |
| UPS | A UPS-compatible patcher or a documented RetroArch workflow | Stores input and output checksums. |
| XDelta/VCDIFF | Delta Patcher or xdelta3; RetroArch also lists XDelta support | Source checks depend on how the patch was created. XDelta is common for large binaries and disc images. |
| PPF | A PPF-capable utility such as PPF-O-MATIC | Confirm the exact disc image and track layout expected by the author. |
Format compatibility is only the first comparison. Also consider whether the utility checks the source and output, whether it runs locally or in a browser, whether it supports your operating system, and whether it makes it simple to preserve an untouched original. A program that opens the patch but gives no indication that the source is wrong is not necessarily safer than one that rejects it.

Delta Patcher is intended for XDelta files. Its practical guide was updated September 17, 2026 and checked against Delta Patcher 3.1.6. Select the source ROM, select the XDelta patch, choose a new output path or enable its backup option, and start the operation. The program is not a universal patcher; it will not open IPS, BPS, UPS or PPF files.
Flips supports IPS and BPS and provides both a graphical interface and command-line operation. Its repository describes the project as being in maintenance mode, so check the current release and operating-system compatibility before depending on it for a new workflow. The command-line option can help repeat a documented process, but it does not remove the need to verify the source checksum and output path.

RetroArch soft-patching
Libretro documentation states: “RetroArch currently supports the UPS, IPS, BPS, and XDelta patching formats.” Actual behavior also depends on the selected core. Soft-patching can be convenient because the original ROM remains unchanged, but it does not remove the need to use the correct region, revision and header state. If a core does not implement the required format or behaves differently from the documentation, create a permanent patched file with a local utility instead.
Soft-patching is best understood as a temporary way to load a patch, not as proof that a permanent output has been created. If you move the ROM, change cores or want to share a reproducible patched file, apply the patch with a local utility and verify that saved output. Keep the patch beside the source when using soft-patching so the relationship between the two files remains clear.

Browser-based patching
PatchMyROM says its browser tool supports IPS, UPS, BPS and XDelta and processes files locally in the browser rather than uploading them. That is the site’s own privacy description, not an independent audit. If you cannot verify how a browser tool handles your files, use a locally installed patcher you trust and keep the work offline. In either case, retain the original and compare the resulting checksum with the value in the release notes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPrepare a safe workspace
- Extract the files. Unpack the patch archive and the clean ROM backup. Do not try to patch an archive such as ZIP or 7z directly unless the tool specifically supports it.
- Separate the original. Store the untouched ROM in a read-only or clearly labelled folder. Copy it to a working folder before any operation.
- Use descriptive names. Name the duplicate with the game, region and revision, and reserve a different name for the patched output. Avoid overwriting the clean file.
- Check the input hash. Compare CRC32 or SHA-1 with the value in the readme. If no checksum is supplied, still confirm every stated region, revision, header and trim requirement.
- Confirm the patch order. If the release contains more than one patch, write down the sequence before applying anything. Do not improvise an order based on filenames alone.
- Keep enough free space. The output can be as large as the source, and disc images may require additional temporary space. A failed write should not leave you guessing whether the file was truncated.
- Preserve the instructions. Keep the readme, patch files and a note of the tool version with the working copy. This makes a later re-creation possible without touching the clean source.
Apply the patch without replacing the clean ROM
- Open a format-compatible tool. For XDelta, use Delta Patcher or xdelta3; for IPS or BPS, use Flips or another compatible utility; for UPS or PPF, choose a utility that explicitly lists that format.
- Select the clean working copy as the source. Do not select a file that has already received another hack, a translation or a randomizer unless the author specifically says it is an intermediate step.
- Select the patch file. Confirm that the extension and documented format match the program. If the utility rejects it, stop rather than renaming the file.
- Set a new output path. Choose a separate filename and folder. If the program offers “create backup” or equivalent, enable it as an additional safeguard.
- Apply patches in the documented order. When each step creates an intermediate file, use that output as the next step’s input only when the readme directs you to do so.
- Wait for completion. Do not close the utility or disconnect storage while it is writing. Read any checksum or error message instead of relying on the existence of an output file.
- Verify the result. Compare the output checksum with the author’s expected value, if supplied. A familiar filename or plausible file size is not proof that patching succeeded.
- Test in a compatible emulator. Start the patched file in an emulator and core appropriate for the system. A successful launch is useful evidence, but it does not replace a published hash check.
Handling multiple IPS files in RetroArch
RetroArch’s documented multi-IPS behavior applies patches in the sequence indicated by extension numbering. Preserve that numbering and do not rename files into a different order. A patch format does not describe every dependency between separate patches, so the hack author’s instructions take precedence.
Platform-specific causes of mismatches
Game Boy Advance
GBA hacks commonly use IPS, BPS or UPS, with XDelta also possible. The cited practical guide describes GBA dumps as having no extra header, so investigate region and release differences rather than adding or removing a header by guesswork. Match the author’s checksum whenever one is listed.
Nintendo DS
XDelta is common for Nintendo DS hacks. A trimmed dump can differ byte-for-byte from the full-size dump used to build the patch. If the readme requires an untrimmed image, use that exact form; changing trim state after a mismatch may make the file look right while remaining incompatible.
Super Nintendo
SNES files may include a 512-byte copier header, or may omit it. A patch made for one form generally will not apply correctly to the other. Check whether the author specifies a headered or headerless source before attempting any conversion.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Nintendo 64
The .z64, .n64 and .v64 extensions can represent different byte orders. The patch must receive the byte order used when it was created. Do not swap bytes simply because another emulator prefers a different extension.
Disc-based systems
Patch the exact file or track named by the author. Compressed or converted forms such as RVZ, NKit, CHD and CSO may need conversion back to the expected plain image first. Track layout, sector structure and image format can all affect the bytes a patch addresses. If the release specifies a particular track, do not feed it an entire disc image or a different conversion.

Troubleshoot a rejected patch or broken output
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The program says the source is invalid. | Wrong region, revision, checksum, header or trim state. | Re-read the requirements, hash the clean copy and obtain the exact variant named by the author. |
| The patcher cannot open the patch. | Wrong utility or a misleading/renamed extension. | Identify the real format from the release documentation and use a matching patcher. Renaming does not convert formats. |
| The output is created but will not boot. | Wrong source bytes, patch order, disc track, N64 byte order or image conversion. | Return to the untouched source, correct the specific format requirement and apply the sequence again. |
| The output launches but crashes later. | Silent IPS mismatch or a source variant that was close but not identical. | Check the author’s expected output checksum and replace the input with the exact verified dump. |
| A second patch fails after the first. | The first patch was applied to the wrong intermediate file or in the wrong order. | Start over from the clean source and follow the release’s stated order exactly. |
| A browser patcher raises privacy concerns. | You cannot independently verify its file handling. | Use a local desktop utility and keep the original and output on storage you control. |
| The file size changed unexpectedly. | A conversion, trim operation or header change occurred before or during patching. | Compare the source form with the release notes and restore the required image form before starting again. |
| The emulator reports an unsupported image. | The output is for a different system format or was patched at the wrong disc or track level. | Confirm the target core, image type and track requirement, then rebuild from the clean source. |
What successful patching looks like
You should finish with three clearly distinguishable items: the untouched clean dump, the working copy or intermediate file, and the final patched output. The final file should match the author’s expected checksum when one is published, use the required region and format, and run in a compatible emulator or core. File size, filename and a single successful boot are useful observations, but none is as conclusive as a matching output hash.
If no output checksum is available, document the exact source checksum, patch version, tool and settings you used. That record makes it possible to diagnose a later crash without modifying the only clean copy. Keep the patch archive and readme with your notes so that a future re-creation uses the same input and order.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run an IPS, BPS, UPS, XDelta or PPF file by itself?
No. These are patch files, not complete games. Apply the patch to the exact clean ROM or disc image specified by the author, then run the newly created output.
Why does my checksum not match when the filename is correct?
The dump may be a different region or revision, trimmed instead of untrimmed, headered instead of headerless, in another N64 byte order, or in a different disc-image form. Compare CRC32 or SHA-1 and follow the release notes rather than forcing the patch.
Can I rename a patch extension so another program will open it?
No. Renaming changes only the label, not the internal format. Use a utility that explicitly supports the actual IPS, BPS, UPS, XDelta or PPF format.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Which format is safest, IPS or BPS?
Neither is automatically safer, but BPS stores source, output and patch checksums, allowing stronger mismatch detection. IPS stores no source checksum, so you must rely more heavily on the author’s published source and output hashes.
Best Value
Is RetroArch enough, or do I need a permanent patched file?
RetroArch documents soft-patching for UPS, IPS, BPS and XDelta, but support depends on the selected core. Soft-patching leaves the original unchanged; use a local compatible utility when you need a permanent, verifiable output.
Is a browser patcher private?
PatchMyROM says its files are processed locally in the browser, but that is the site’s own privacy claim. If you cannot verify the handling, choose a locally installed tool and keep the files on storage you control.
What should I do if the patch applies but the game crashes later?
Start again from the untouched source. Verify the source checksum, patch order, header or trim state, byte order and disc-image requirement, then compare the output with the author’s expected checksum if one is available.
Can I patch an RVZ, NKit, CHD or CSO file directly?
Not unless the release specifically says that form is supported. Converted or compressed images may need to be restored to the exact plain image, file or track layout used to create the patch.
Can I apply a second hack to the output of the first?
Only when the author documents that sequence. Otherwise begin with the clean source; patches generally expect a particular input byte sequence and may fail or create a broken result when chained arbitrarily.
The Bottom Line
Match the patch format and source checksum, use the exact region and file variant named by the author, and patch a duplicate rather than your only clean ROM. Save to a new output path, follow the documented order, verify the output hash when available, and test with a compatible emulator or core.
