Neither platform is universally better. Steam is the stronger fit when your launch depends on a structured store, conditional discovery placements, and Steamworks analytics, and you can absorb its $100-per-app fee and onboarding work. itch.io is the better fit when you want to control your page, price, sales, revenue share, or payment arrangement—including pay-what-you-want releases.
Official platform documentation does not establish that a typical indie game sells more on one service. Choose according to your audience, launch plan, cash flow, tolerance for payment administration, and need for storefront control. Some developers can use both, but only if maintaining two product pages, builds, support queues, and policy sets is worth the extra work.

Steam and itch.io solve different publishing problems
Steam is a curated-feeling PC storefront built around a formal publishing workflow. You create an app in Steamworks, complete business and payment paperwork, pay a Steam Direct fee, prepare the store page and build, and submit the release. Once live, the game can be considered for several Steam-controlled discovery surfaces and you receive traffic data such as impressions and store-page visits.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

itch.io describes itself as an open marketplace for independent digital creators. The seller controls the page design, price, sale schedule, and platform revenue share. Its tools support pay-what-you-want pricing, pre-orders, rewards, early access, bundles, and crowdfunding goals. You can also inspect discovery, download, play, and referral-link analytics.

Those differences matter more than a simple “which site has more users?” ranking. The available official documentation does not provide a like-for-like median sales figure, player-reach figure, or conversion rate for comparable games on the two platforms. Treat traffic as something to validate for your own title rather than a guaranteed outcome.

What Steam costs and what its fee actually means
The Steam Direct fee
Steamworks documents a $100 USD Steam Direct fee for each new app, or the equivalent amount in another supported currency. Valve says the fee is not refundable. It can, however, be recouped in a later payment after that product reaches at least $1,000 in adjusted gross revenue from Steam Store sales or in-app purchases, subject to the conditions in Valve’s documentation.
That is a cash-flow requirement, not necessarily a permanent publishing expense. You must have the $100 available before release, and a game that never reaches the stated revenue threshold will not recoup it. Budget for the fee per app: separate apps, demos configured as separate apps, or other products may create separate fee obligations under Steam’s rules.
Do not treat “76%” as your guaranteed Steam payout
Valve reported that 76% was paid out across all non-Valve games on Steam in 2025. The figure excludes money developers may earn from Steam keys sold outside Steam. It is a platform-wide aggregate, not a stated universal Steam commission, an estimate for a particular indie title, or a prediction of your earnings. It also cannot be used as a head-to-head sales comparison with itch.io.
The Steam pages considered here do not state one universal revenue-share percentage that applies to every situation. Calculate your own forecast from the commercial terms that apply to your account, territory, product, taxes, refunds, and any other deductions rather than inserting a blanket percentage into a spreadsheet.
Steam onboarding work
Before launch, plan for identity and business information, payment details, tax forms, store-page assets, build uploads, testing, and review steps in Steamworks. The exact forms and timing can change, so start onboarding before your public release date. A late payment or paperwork issue can delay a launch even when the game itself is finished.

How itch.io pricing and revenue sharing work
You choose the platform share
itch.io lets a seller configure the platform share anywhere from 0% to 100%. A 0% platform share does not mean a free transaction: payment processors still charge for processing, and those charges are deducted according to the payment method and account arrangement.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The documentation describes processor costs as typically around $0.30 plus 2.9% per transaction, while warning that actual costs vary by provider and circumstances. Treat that number as an approximate example, not a universal current price for every country, currency, card, account, or payment method. Small purchases are especially sensitive to the fixed component, so model your expected order value before selecting a revenue-share setting.
Pay-what-you-want and experiments
For a demo, small experimental project, tool, soundtrack, or community-supported release, itch.io can accept pay-what-you-want purchases with a minimum price of zero. You can also set a normal price, schedule sales, offer pre-orders or rewards, publish an early-access build, join a bundle, or attach a crowdfunding goal. These options let you test demand and support models without waiting for a conventional premium launch.
Page and promotion control
On itch.io, the seller designs the product page and decides how to present screenshots, downloads, builds, pricing, sale messaging, and external links. Analytics can show how people discover the page, whether they download or play, and which referral links send traffic. That control is useful when your audience arrives from a mailing list, social account, community, event, or developer blog and you want the landing page to match that campaign.
Payment, VAT, and chargeback responsibilities
The most consequential itch.io choice is not the percentage alone; it is who operates the payment relationship.
Recommended Free Tools
| itch.io payment mode | Merchant of record | Seller responsibilities and timing |
|---|---|---|
| Direct to you | You | You connect payment providers and are responsible for VAT collection and remittance, as well as the associated payment administration and chargeback exposure described in the platform terms. |
| itch.io Payouts | itch.io | itch.io handles VAT collection and remittance. You request later payouts and must meet eligibility conditions, including a documented $5 minimum balance and a seven-day transaction waiting period. |
“Merchant of record” determines who is the legal seller to the customer for the relevant transaction. It affects invoices, tax collection, refunds, chargebacks, and the records your business must keep. Review the current payment terms for your country before enabling sales; the available methods, thresholds, and waiting periods can change.

How discovery works on Steam
Baseline exposure is conditional, not guaranteed traffic
Valve says a full release enters a pool for the New Releases Queue. The system prioritizes titles with fewer views, but a user’s preferences or filters can exclude a game. Additional placements may include personalized recommendations, New and Trending, genre pages, top sellers, and the Discovery Queue.
Those placements depend on customer interests, potential audience, and how players respond. Purchases and play are strong signals of interest. A release can therefore receive an opportunity to be seen without receiving a guaranteed number of impressions, wishlists, sales, or players.
What Steam’s analytics can tell you
Steamworks provides traffic analytics including impressions and store-page visits. Use them to identify where attention is coming from and where the page loses people. A simple diagnostic sequence is:
- Compare impressions with store-page visits to see whether your capsule art, title, and short description earn clicks.
- Compare visits with wishlists or purchases to find a pricing, positioning, demo, or page-quality problem.
- Compare launch-day traffic with later traffic to determine whether your campaign created sustained interest or only a brief spike.
- Segment changes by update, trailer, sale, or external campaign so you do not credit Steam placement for traffic generated elsewhere.
Paid placement is not the promise
Valve’s visibility FAQ answers the question “Can I pay for my game to show up to more customers?” with: “Nope. You focus on making a compelling, interesting, and unique game, and Steam will work out the best places to feature your game based on customers’ interests, preferences, and feedback.” Plan for a strong store page and player response, not a purchased guarantee of visibility.
How discovery works on itch.io
itch.io gives you more control over the page and campaign mechanics, but control is not the same as automatic reach. You may bring visitors through your own community, a press campaign, a game jam, a mailing list, a creator platform, or referral links, then use itch.io analytics to see what those visitors do.

This model is attractive when you already have an audience or when the game benefits from experimentation. You can adjust the page, price, sale message, download options, and rewards without waiting for a platform-controlled merchandising slot. The trade-off is that you are responsible for creating enough qualified traffic to test those changes.
Why release on itch.io instead of Steam?
Choose itch.io first when one or more of these conditions describe your project:
- You need pricing freedom: pay-what-you-want, a zero minimum, frequent sales, bundles, or unusual reward tiers are central to the plan.
- You want page ownership: the presentation, embedded material, download choices, and campaign messaging need to be tailored closely to your community.
- You are testing an idea: a prototype, game-jam entry, early build, or experimental business model benefits from fast iteration.
- You prefer to choose the platform share: you can set the percentage deliberately after modeling processor costs and support overhead.
- You can drive external traffic: your launch depends on a known community, mailing list, event, or creator network rather than expecting store placement to do the discovery work.
- You want a specific payment arrangement: you are comfortable either acting as merchant of record or using itch.io Payouts under its eligibility and timing rules.
itch.io is not automatically the cheaper option. A 0% platform share still leaves processor fees, and Direct to you can leave VAT and payment administration with your business. Compare total net proceeds and operational effort, not just the headline percentage.
When Steam is the better first release
Steam deserves priority when your plan depends on:
- A formal PC-store launch: you are prepared for app creation, paperwork, payment setup, assets, testing, and the $100 fee.
- Store-mediated discovery: you want the possibility of New Releases Queue, Discovery Queue, genre, trending, or personalized placements and can accept that each is conditional.
- Steamworks data: impressions and store-page visits will inform your capsule art, messaging, pricing, and launch campaign.
- A conventional premium product: your price, build, and support plan fit a structured storefront better than a pay-what-you-want or prototype-oriented release.
- Audience alignment: you have evidence that your intended players shop through Steam, rather than relying on an assumption about platform size.
Steam is a poor fit for a plan that requires guaranteed visibility, complete control over the storefront’s cut, or a release with no upfront cash commitment. Its discovery systems can create opportunities, but they do not promise volume.
A practical decision framework
Score each question before committing. The goal is not to produce a universal winner; it is to expose the constraint that matters most for your game.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Where will your first qualified visitors come from? If the answer is an existing community or campaign, itch.io’s page and pricing control may be valuable. If the answer is store browsing, Steam’s conditional discovery surfaces may be worth the fee and setup.
- What pricing model is essential? A fixed premium price can work on either platform. Pay-what-you-want, zero-minimum support, rewards, or crowdfunding point toward itch.io.
- How much cash can you commit before launch? Steam requires $100 per new app before release. Include that payment in the launch budget and do not assume recoupment unless the game reaches the stated adjusted-gross threshold.
- Who should handle tax and payment administration? On itch.io, compare Direct to you with itch.io Payouts. On Steam, complete the required onboarding and payment paperwork. Ask an accountant about your own jurisdiction rather than copying another developer’s setup.
- How much storefront control do you need? If page design, sale mechanics, and revenue-share choice are product requirements, itch.io is the natural starting point. If standardized store infrastructure is more important, Steam may be preferable.
- What evidence will change your mind? Define targets for page visits, conversion, wishlists, downloads, play, refunds, and support volume before launch. Without a measurement plan, platform choice becomes anecdote.
Step-by-step: preparing a Steam release
- Open Steamworks onboarding early. Create the app, complete the required business, identity, tax, and payment information, and allow time for any verification.
- Budget the Steam Direct fee. Pay the $100 fee for the app and record the condition for recoupment: at least $1,000 in adjusted gross revenue from Steam Store or in-app purchases.
- Build the store page. Write a clear short description, prepare capsule art and screenshots, show the actual game, and make the price and system requirements understandable before the page is public.
- Upload and test the build. Verify installation, first launch, save behavior, controller or keyboard input, resolution, language options, achievements or other promised features, and update delivery.
- Set a launch date only after the critical path works. Coordinate the store page, demo if applicable, press materials, community announcements, and customer-support coverage.
- Track traffic after release. Use impressions and store-page visits to diagnose the page, then compare those figures with wishlists and purchases. Separate platform traffic from links you control.
- Read player response as a merchandising signal. Purchases and play are among the signals Valve identifies as strong indicators of interest. Improve the product and page rather than assuming a placement is owed.
Step-by-step: preparing an itch.io release
- Create the project page. Choose the title, description, screenshots, trailer or embedded media, download files, supported operating systems, and contact information.
- Select the price model. Set a fixed price, pay-what-you-want with a minimum of zero, a sale price, a pre-order, or another supported structure that matches the product’s stage.
- Choose the platform share deliberately. Test several revenue-share settings in a spreadsheet that includes processor costs, refunds, taxes, support time, and the amount you need to fund updates.
- Select payment mode. Decide whether Direct to you or itch.io Payouts fits your tax and cash-flow situation. Confirm the merchant-of-record arrangement, payout eligibility, waiting period, and supported provider before announcing the launch.
- Configure the campaign. Add rewards, early access, bundles, a crowdfunding goal, or a sale only when the rules are clear to customers and sustainable for your team.
- Test every download and purchase path. Verify that files are the right versions, instructions are visible, payments complete, and customers know where to obtain updates or support.
- Use referral analytics. Tag or organize links for each campaign source, then compare discovery, downloads, and play so you can invest in the channels that produce engaged players.
Using both platforms without creating avoidable problems
A dual release can separate audiences: Steam can serve players who want a conventional PC storefront, while itch.io can serve communities that value flexible pricing, bundles, or direct relationships. It also doubles the operational surface area.
Best Value
Before publishing on both, decide which version is authoritative for updates, how keys or entitlement will work, where support requests go, and whether the builds have identical features. Keep a shared version-number policy and changelog. Make platform differences explicit if one store has a different price, release date, bonus, or payment arrangement; confusing customers creates support work and refund risk.
Do not list both platforms merely to claim wider distribution. The second page should have a measurable purpose, such as reaching a distinct community, testing a different price model, or providing a payment option your primary store cannot support.
Metrics that make the comparison useful
Because there is no reliable official head-to-head sales statistic for typical indie games, compare your own funnel on consistent dates and price conditions.
| Stage | Steam examples | itch.io examples | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reach | Impressions and traffic sources | Discovery sources and referral links | Are the right people seeing the page? |
| Intent | Wishlists, follows, demo activity where applicable | Downloads, follows, pre-orders, or reward selections | Does the page communicate a clear reason to buy or download? |
| Conversion | Purchases relative to store-page visits | Purchases relative to page visits or downloads | Is price, positioning, or trust blocking the decision? |
| Engagement | Play and post-launch response | Play, updates, and returning visitors | Do customers continue using the game? |
| Net result | Revenue after the applicable commercial deductions, refunds, and taxes | Revenue after platform share, processor costs, refunds, and taxes | Does the channel fund support and future development? |
Compare like with like: the same launch window, price, edition, discount, region mix, and advertising effort. A platform that produces fewer sales but much higher net revenue or lower support cost may be the better business channel.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming platform size equals sales. No official evidence here supplies a typical indie sales advantage. Validate your own audience and funnel.
- Calling 0% itch.io share “free.” Processor charges remain, and their actual amount varies.
- Ignoring merchant-of-record status. Direct to you and itch.io Payouts assign VAT and payment duties differently.
- Budgeting Steam’s fee as automatically refundable. It is nonrefundable; recoupment requires at least $1,000 in adjusted gross revenue under the documented conditions.
- Promising Steam placement. New Releases Queue and other surfaces are conditional, and customer preferences can exclude a title.
- Using the 76% statistic as a commission quote. It is Valve’s 2025 aggregate payout across non-Valve games, excluding Steam-key revenue earned outside Steam.
- Launching without support capacity. Two stores mean two sets of pages, builds, payment questions, update paths, and potential refund or chargeback cases.
- Failing to check current terms. Fees, payment availability, payout rules, and visibility systems can change; review the platform documentation immediately before launch.
Bottom line
Pick Steam when its structured store, Steamworks workflow, analytics, and possible discovery placements match your launch—and you can fund the $100 app fee and onboarding. Pick itch.io when control over price, page, revenue share, pay-what-you-want options, and payment arrangement matters more than platform-managed merchandising. If neither platform alone satisfies the plan, use both only with a clear reason and a measurement system. The evidence does not support promising that one platform reliably outsells the other for a typical indie game.
