For safe storage, switch off your battery-powered weed eater, remove the battery, clean and inspect the tool using its manual, then keep the trimmer and battery in a clean, dry place. Battery charge and temperature recommendations differ by model, so use the instructions for your exact trimmer and battery rather than applying one brand’s guidance to another.
How to clean and inspect a battery-powered weed eater
- Switch off and remove the battery. Do this before cleaning, inspection, or maintenance. Let recently used parts cool before handling them when applicable. The STIHL FSA 30.0 instruction manual specifies battery removal before this work.
- Clear grass and debris. Clean the cutting head, guard, cooling system, and air intake with the method approved by your manual. Husqvarna’s seasonal storage guidance calls attention to grass, dirt, dust, and plant sap around these areas.
- Use gentle cleaning methods. For the FSA 30.0, STIHL advises a slightly damp cloth for polymer components and a soft brush or soft, dry cloth for battery guides and charger contacts. It warns against pressure-washing or spraying the trimmer and against detergents or solvents that could damage its parts. Unplug the charger before cleaning it. Other models may have different requirements.
- Inspect parts that affect safe operation. Look over the cutting attachment, guard, fasteners, and visible components for wear or damage. Replace parts or arrange authorized service as the manual directs. Before using the tool again, check the attachment and fasteners, and make sure the battery and charger are undamaged.
Do not assume that every trimmer needs the same lubrication or service interval. Lubricate only where, and when, the model’s manual instructs. Petrol-engine winterization steps such as fuel, air-filter, spark-plug, or exhaust maintenance do not apply to a battery-powered weed eater.

How to store the trimmer and battery
Put the cleaned trimmer in a clean, dry, protected location, away from dampness and children. Store the battery outside the tool and follow the battery manual for its charge state and temperature limits. Keep the charger as its own manual specifies. Hang the trimmer only if it has a suitable hanging point and the manufacturer permits that storage position.

| Model or guidance | Battery charge guidance | Temperature or location guidance | Duration addressed |
|---|---|---|---|
| STIHL FSA 30.0 | For maximum battery life, store at 40–60% charge (2 green LEDs). | 10–20°C (50–68°F) ambient temperature. | General battery storage guidance; the cited manual does not state a specific duration. |
| Toro battery trimmer interactive manual | For storage of a year or longer, remove the battery and charge it until one or two indicators are green. Do not store fully charged or fully depleted. | Use the temperature range specified for the product. | A year or longer. |

The STIHL charge and temperature values come from the FSA 30.0 manual; the long-duration Toro instructions are in its interactive battery trimmer manual; and the 0–49°C range is for the named Toro product in its Flex-Force 60V MAX manual. Do not substitute one model’s figures for another’s.
What to do with trimmer line during seasonal storage
STIHL UK recommends removing mowing line from the head or spool and storing it in water to help preserve flexibility. If line has been stored dry, STIHL says to soak it for one to two days before use. Treat this as STIHL’s advice, not a universal requirement: check your own manual for compatible line, the correct diameter, and whether the line or head needs any special handling. Choose replacement string-trimmer line only if it is compatible with your model and head.

How to prepare the weed eater for its next use
Before reinstalling the battery, check the cutting attachment and fasteners for wear or looseness, clear any remaining debris, and examine the battery and charger for damage. If a part is damaged or the manual calls for replacement or service, follow that direction before operating the tool. Use the manual’s approved battery and charging instructions for the first use after storage.

Why the exact manual matters
Battery chemistry and storage instructions are not interchangeable across trimmers. The STIHL and Toro examples above give different charge guidance, and the Toro models specify their own temperature and storage conditions. Husqvarna’s winter storage guide also recommends a clean, dry, ventilated location and separate battery storage in a dry, moderate-temperature place. Use your product’s manual as the final authority for charge level, temperature, cleaning agents, lubrication, and replacement parts.
