Dry the blanket completely before storing it
After a trip, air the blanket until it is fully dry, including the fill, before putting it away. Damp storage can lead to mildew. The North Face says, “It is imperative to completely dry the sleeping bag before storage,” and advises checking the attached care label for product-specific instructions: The North Face Product Care FAQs. Haglöfs likewise says to make sure the item is completely dry before storage: Haglöfs sleeping bag care.

Keep it loose rather than compressed
Once dry, avoid leaving the blanket tightly packed for long-term storage. Compression is useful for reducing bulk on a trip, but prolonged compression can reduce down loft and insulating efficiency. Haglöfs gives that warning for down sleeping bags; it is relevant general insulation-care guidance, while your blanket’s own label remains the authority for its care.
Choose a storage method

Therm-a-Rest’s Ramble Down Blanket care instructions say to store the item loose in a cool, dry place, and recommend its supplied extended storage sack or something larger if a sack is needed. They also advise against using a waterproof bag for long-term storage. Do not assume a sealed plastic container is suitable unless the blanket maker says so.

Check the blanket’s own care instructions
Care can depend on the shell and fill used in a particular blanket. Follow its label and manufacturer instructions for drying, cleaning, and storage. The cited manufacturer guidance does not set a universal compression time limit, storage temperature, or measurable amount of loft loss.
