Unlike equipment in a terrestrial data center, space computing must be designed around radiation, limited power and mass, heat removal, fault recovery and communication delays. This onboard edge computing is already a spacecraft function; large orbital data centers remain a separate, forward-looking concept.
What does AI do on a satellite?
An onboard computer receives data from instruments or sensors, schedules software to process it, and sends commands or useful results to other spacecraft systems or to Earth. Some workloads use AI inference: for example, identifying objects or events in imagery, analyzing observations, or supporting autonomous decisions. The same hardware also handles conventional spacecraft control, communications, signal processing and data management.

Processing data near the instrument can reduce how much raw information must be transmitted. In an ESA-described scenario, an observing satellite could send data to another satellite for processing and relay only relevant results to Earth. That can be useful when a vehicle needs to act before a ground controller can respond or when communication is delayed. NASA notes that delays to and from Earth increase the value of onboard computing and autonomy, particularly for missions beyond Earth orbit.

The chip is only one part of the system. Sensors and instruments provide inputs; processors execute control and analysis code; memory and networking move data between components; power management allocates energy; software and fault-detection mechanisms help keep operations within mission limits; and thermal interfaces transfer heat away from electronics.

NASA describes its High-Performance Spaceflight Computing (HPSC) project as a system-on-chip combining computing and networking, with the ability to connect sensors or cluster chips. Its intended uses include filtering scientific images and supporting real-time autonomous decisions. NASA’s project FAQ describes a RISC-V CPU-based design with heterogeneous multicore processing, integrated vector engines, controllable power islands, radiation mitigation and fault-tolerance features. Those are project descriptions, not a like-for-like benchmark against terrestrial servers.
A different approach is to put commercial compute modules inside a purpose-built spacecraft processing unit. ESA describes its ASCEND Sterna and Morus architecture as separating a radiation-tolerant supervisor domain, which manages health, power and recovery, from a Linux processing domain running on NVIDIA Jetson modules. ESA identifies qualification for radiation tolerance and thermal management as challenges for these commercial modules in conduction-cooled satellite platforms. A commercial module is therefore not automatically flight-ready just because it can run an AI workload.

What makes space computing different from a data center on Earth?
| Factor | Spacecraft computing | Earth-based data centers |
|---|---|---|
| Radiation | Ionizing solar and cosmic radiation can cause data errors, single-event effects, cascading malfunctions, crashes or permanent damage. Space systems use mitigation and recovery approaches suited to the mission. | The official sources cited here do not quantify terrestrial radiation requirements, so they do not support a blanket claim that ground hardware is radiation-proof. |
| Power and mass | Power and payload mass are mission resources. Designs may control power use, gate unused functions or package processing in compact systems. | A meaningful comparison would need workload and facility assumptions; the cited sources provide no equivalent power or mass benchmark. |
| Latency and data movement | Onboard analysis can support decisions without waiting for a ground response and can reduce raw-data downlink. | Ground systems rely on network paths between data sources, compute and users. The cited sources establish no numerical latency comparison. |
| Fault tolerance | Mission systems may need to detect, recover from or continue operating through faults. NASA describes fault-tolerance features in HPSC and a redundant FPGA approach in RadPC. | Terrestrial server practices cannot simply be assumed to meet spacecraft mission requirements. |
| Thermal management | Heat must be managed within the spacecraft’s design. ESA identifies thermal dissipation and integration with conduction-cooled platforms as challenges. | The cited sources do not provide a comparative heat-rejection analysis; space should not be assumed to make cooling easy. |
| Readiness | Space-qualified processors, commercial modules integrated into spacecraft units and early-stage technology concepts have different readiness levels. | Conventional ground data centers are established infrastructure; they are distinct from proposed orbital data centers. |
Why radiation protection and recovery matter
Radiation is a reliability concern, not merely a harsh-environment label. NASA explains that ionizing radiation can produce single-event effects and errors, trigger cascading malfunctions or crashes, and damage electronics permanently. The appropriate response depends on mission needs: a system may use radiation mitigation, redundant hardware, fault detection, recovery software or a combination rather than one universal hardening method.
Examples of different approaches
- HPSC: NASA describes radiation mitigation and fault-tolerance features as part of the processor’s design.
- RadPC: NASA describes a demonstration using redundant processors implemented on off-the-shelf FPGAs to detect and recover from radiation-induced faults. NASA’s article discussed a planned 2025 lunar demonstration; that plan alone does not establish its outcome.
- Sterna and Morus: ESA describes a radiation-tolerant supervisor domain for system health, power and recovery alongside a commercial Linux processing domain. ESA also identifies radiation qualification of the commercial module as a challenge.
Examples and maturity of space AI hardware
| Example | What the source says | Status and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| NASA HPSC | NASA says the next-generation system-on-chip is intended to address performance, power management, fault tolerance and connectivity for missions through 2040 and beyond. NASA reports more than 100 times the computing capability of current space processors. | As of the project page’s March 2026 status, further power, performance, reliability and radiation-tolerance tests were underway; NASA says completion will mark space qualification. NASA names Microchip as industry collaborator and says the processor will be commercially available from Microchip. |
| ASCEND Sterna | ESA describes a satellite data-processing unit built around NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX for AI inference and flexible payload functions, with at least 100 TOPS INT8 inference. | The ESA page does not state a publication date or establish that every configuration is independently flight-qualified. |
| RadPC | NASA describes redundant processors on off-the-shelf FPGAs that detect and recover from radiation-induced faults. | NASA’s article describes a planned 2025 lunar demonstration; the cited plan does not establish the mission outcome. |
| SMARTIE | NASA describes three high-performance computer tiles in a folded-flex package, with over 300 gigaflops and 15 TOPS AI performance using less than 10 watts. | NASA characterizes SMARTIE as early-stage technology development. The cited page does not state a publication date. |
These figures describe different projects and metrics; they are not interchangeable benchmarks. In particular, the available sources do not establish a direct comparison between space chips and terrestrial data-center hardware.

Are orbital data centers the same as onboard processing?
No. Onboard processing means a spacecraft processes its own—or another vehicle’s—data as part of a mission. An orbital data center would be a larger infrastructure concept. ESA discusses possible future scenarios such as a satellite processing another satellite’s observations, an observing satellite relaying data to a geostationary data center, or a lunar lander processing rover data.
Those scenarios remain forward-looking in the ESA source, which highlights constraints including small size, radiation compatibility, thermal dissipation and power. They should not be confused with today’s established use of onboard processors for spacecraft control, sensor processing and mission autonomy.
