You can reset a Chromebook to factory settings without a recovery drive if it can reach the sign-in screen: use the built-in Powerwash flow. Powerwash is different from ChromeOS recovery, which reinstalls the operating system and may require internet access or a USB drive. Back up local files first; Powerwash erases them.
Before you reset: back up files and check who manages the Chromebook
Powerwash erases user data stored on the Chromebook, including files in Downloads, as well as settings and apps. Sync account information and copy local files you want to keep to Google Drive or external storage before continuing. Google says files already stored in Drive or on external storage are not deleted by Powerwash. Google’s Powerwash instructions explain what the reset removes.

If this is a work or school Chromebook, contact your administrator instead of attempting a personal reset. Google says users cannot perform the ordinary reset themselves on these devices; an administrator must wipe and re-enroll them.
Reset a Chromebook from the sign-in screen with Powerwash
Use these steps when the Chromebook starts and you can get to its sign-in screen. You do not need a recovery drive for this process.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
- Sign out of the Chromebook if you are signed in.
- Press and hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r.
- Select Restart.
- In the dialog, choose Powerwash, then Continue.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the reset and set up the Chromebook again.
The account used to sign in after the reset becomes the Chromebook’s owner account. If you are resetting it for someone else, let that person complete the initial sign-in.
Powerwash or ChromeOS recovery: which do you need?
| Option | What it does | When it fits | Recovery media |
|---|---|---|---|
| Powerwash | Restores factory settings and initializes local user data. | The Chromebook starts, and you want to address a profile, settings, or ownership issue. | Not needed; start it through the built-in sign-in flow. |
| ChromeOS recovery | Removes and reinstalls ChromeOS. | The operating system has a serious problem, such as a “ChromeOS is missing or damaged” message. | Some newer Chromebooks may support internet recovery. If that option is unavailable or you cannot use the internet, USB recovery may be needed. |
For recovery instructions and device-dependent options, see Google’s Chromebook recovery guide. Recovery also permanently erases local files. Do not start recovery simply because you want a factory reset: it is a separate procedure for operating-system problems.

What a factory reset does not necessarily erase
Powerwash removes local user data, but it does not necessarily erase everything associated with the device. ChromeOS itself, device health and diagnostics information, and enterprise enrollment knowledge may remain. Files stored in the cloud are not removed by resetting the Chromebook; delete cloud data separately if that is your goal. Google describes these distinctions in its enterprise and education guidance on Powerwash and data erasure.
