Keep the complete recovery phrase offline: record it by hand or on a dedicated physical backup, check every word and its order, then store it somewhere private and secure. Do not type it into a browser, website, extension, computer, phone, password manager, cloud drive, email, screenshot, scan, or printer workflow. Anyone who gets the complete phrase in the correct order may be able to access the wallet.
What a seed phrase protects—and why it must stay private
A seed phrase, also called a recovery phrase, recovery words, mnemonic, or Secret Recovery Phrase, is a master secret for recovering a wallet. Treat the full phrase as equivalent to access to the wallet: never give it to a person claiming to be support, enter it on a website, or share it with anyone else. A legitimate recovery process should follow the wallet maker’s official instructions, not a browser prompt or a phrase copied from a webpage.

Keeping the phrase offline reduces exposure to online compromise, but it does not protect against someone finding or stealing the backup, fire, water, accidental destruction, or your inability to locate and use it when needed. Secure storage therefore has two jobs: keep the phrase confidential and make sure you can recover it accurately.
How to make a browser-free physical backup
- Use the wallet’s official setup or recovery process. Follow the maker’s instructions and use the wallet’s trusted display or process to obtain the words. Do not copy words from a website, browser prompt, or message.
- Record every word privately. Write the words clearly on paper or a dedicated physical backup medium. Number them and preserve their exact order. Check spelling and sequence against the wallet’s trusted display or instructions; a missing, misspelled, or reordered word can prevent recovery.
- Keep the phrase out of digital workflows. Do not type, photograph, scan, print, upload, email, or save it in a file or app. That includes password managers, cloud drives, browser extensions, and phone or computer notes.
- Store the complete backup securely and separately from the wallet. Choose a private physical location, and avoid labels or containers that advertise that they hold crypto backup material. Consider whether you could access it during a move, travel disruption, or emergency.
- Decide deliberately whether to make another copy. A second complete backup can reduce the risk of losing the only copy to a single-location event, but it also creates another opportunity for theft or discovery. If you make one, protect it at a separate secure location. There is no universal right number of copies.

Paper is easier to make but less durable; metal improves resistance to physical damage but does not solve confidentiality. Neither is automatically safest for every household. Choose based on physical damage risks, privacy, recovery accuracy, emergency access, complexity, and cost.

BitBox’s official recovery-word storage guide, updated July 21, 2026, advises: “Write each word clearly, number it, and preserve the exact order shown by the hardware wallet.” Its recommendation is specific guidance, not a universal wallet recovery procedure.
Keep recovery practical, not needlessly complicated
Do not invent a code for the words or split them into pieces unless you understand exactly how recovery will work. Added complexity can make it harder for you or a trusted successor to restore the wallet without meaningfully improving security.

Some wallets offer an optional passphrase in addition to the recovery words. It is separate from the words and may open a separate wallet; losing either the words or passphrase can make that wallet inaccessible. Use this advanced feature only with a deliberate plan for protecting and recovering both secrets.
A safe-deposit box or off-site location may help in some circumstances, but consider whether you can reach it in an emergency and how an intended heir could access the backup. Availability matters alongside secrecy.

What to do if the phrase may have been exposed
If someone has seen, photographed, copied, typed, or received the phrase, treat it as compromised. BitBox’s guidance is to create a new wallet with a new backup and move funds as soon as safely possible. Do not assume that deleting a photo, message, or file removes every copy.
Wallet recovery systems can differ, so consult the particular wallet’s official recovery instructions and confirm compatibility rather than assuming a phrase restores every wallet. Hardware wallets can limit private-key exposure to internet-connected computers, but they do not remove the need to protect the backup or check transaction details.
