Before paying for a discounted iPhone, confirm you can activate it on your carrier, that Activation Lock is off, and that the seller will accept a return if the phone is not as described. Then check the specific phone’s remaining coverage, battery condition, repair history, and physical state. These details depend on the device and seller; a discount alone does not establish them.
Start with the return policy
Read the seller’s terms before checkout. Confirm the return deadline, which reasons qualify, how to send the phone back, and who pays return shipping. Apple’s guidance for preowned iPhones recommends understanding the return period, accepted reasons, and return process before buying. Apple’s preowned iPhone guidance is useful, but it does not replace the seller’s own terms.

For eligible purchases made through the Apple Store in the United States, Apple’s current return terms allow 14 days, subject to the policy’s conditions. That period does not automatically apply to phones bought from a marketplace or another retailer; those sellers set their own policies. Check Apple Store return terms for Apple purchases and read the actual listing terms for any other seller.

Check whether the iPhone is locked to a carrier
On the iPhone, open Settings > General > About and look for Carrier Lock. Apple says that “No SIM restrictions” means the phone is unlocked. If a carrier is listed instead, the phone is restricted to that carrier. Apple’s carrier-unlock instructions explain the status and next steps.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Only the current carrier can unlock an iPhone, and Apple notes that the process can take a few days. If you need another carrier, ask the seller to arrange the unlock before the sale, then confirm the phone shows “No SIM restrictions.” Do not rely only on a listing description or a seller’s promise that it is “easy to unlock.”
Make sure Activation Lock is off
Activation Lock can prevent you from setting up and using a phone tied to someone else’s Apple Account. Apple’s advice is direct: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” Before buying a preowned iPhone, have the owner turn off Activation Lock. For an online purchase, return the phone if it arrives displaying “iPhone Locked to Owner.”
Rank #2
- Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.).
- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charging cable that may be generic.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
For an in-person sale, the safest check is to have the seller erase the iPhone and let you complete setup and activation before handing over payment. If you cannot complete setup, do not treat the device as ready to use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteEstablish what warranty coverage remains
Apple’s US iOS Limited Warranty provides one year of coverage from the original retail purchase by the end-user purchaser, according to the version in effect since January 19, 2024. That is the original warranty term, not a guarantee that a secondhand phone has a year left. Check the particular phone’s serial number using Apple’s coverage lookup, and ask the seller for proof of purchase and any separate written warranty.

- Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.
Apple notes that warranty service for an iPhone may be restricted to the country where Apple or its authorized distributors originally sold it. If the device was imported, verify the applicable terms rather than assuming service will be available in your country. A seller’s warranty, if offered, is separate: read who provides it, what it covers, and how to make a claim.
Inspect the phone’s condition, battery, and repairs
Apple recommends checking for physical damage, battery health, and parts and service history when possible. Inspect the screen, frame, cameras, buttons, speakers, charging port, and any other features you rely on. Test the phone promptly so there is time to report problems within the seller’s return window.
Rank #4
- Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.
Review the battery information and, where available, the parts and service history in Settings. Apple says an “Unknown” part-history label can mean a part was incompletely installed, is nongenuine or previously used, or is not functioning as expected. Treat that label as a reason to ask questions and evaluate the phone—not as proof of just one specific fault.
Know what Apple Certified Refurbished includes
Apple’s Certified Refurbished US program is distinct from a third-party seller’s “refurbished” description. Apple says its refurbished iPhones receive full functional testing, a new battery and outer shell, and a standard one-year limited warranty; its US program page also advertises free shipping and returns. Apple advertises savings of up to 15%, which is a program maximum, not a promise that any particular iPhone is discounted by that amount. See Apple Certified Refurbished iPhones and Apple’s refurbished-program details for current terms.

Do not assume those services or terms apply to an unrelated refurbished listing. For a third-party phone, verify its condition description, lock status, warranty, and return policy directly with that seller. If you are considering AppleCare, first check whether that specific device is eligible; Apple says eligibility can be checked online or in device settings. AppleCare eligibility information explains how.
Compare offers on the same basis
Compare phones with the same model and storage capacity, then weigh the full offer rather than the headline price. A lower price may come with a carrier restriction, less coverage, a shorter or narrower return window, poorer condition, or no useful warranty. Include any accessories or services in the total only if you would otherwise buy them.
- Carrier: Is it unlocked, or compatible with the carrier you intend to use?
- Activation: Can you complete setup without the previous owner’s Apple Account?
- Coverage: What does Apple’s serial-number lookup show, and is there a separate written seller warranty?
- Returns: How long do you have, what qualifies, and who pays return shipping?
- Condition: What are the battery health, physical condition, and parts history?
- Total offer: What is included, and does the price still make sense after accounting for the checks above?
These checks establish whether an offer’s terms suit you; they cannot establish a phone’s status without inspecting that device and confirming the seller’s current listing terms.
