The safest basic approach is offline and physical: write the recovery phrase in the correct order, verify every word, keep it away from cameras and internet-connected devices, and store it where both strangers and common hazards cannot reach it. Paper is cheap and easy to replace but can burn, get wet, fade, tear, or disappear. Metal survives more environmental damage but is still an unencrypted copy of the secret. A hardware wallet keeps signing keys offline for transactions, reducing many remote-attack paths, yet it still requires a separately protected recovery phrase if the device is lost, reset, damaged, or discontinued.
What a crypto seed phrase is—and why storage matters
A recovery phrase, also called a seed phrase, is an ordered sequence of words from which a wallet can be fully restored. The words are not a password hint or an account identifier; they are the wallet’s master recovery material. In practical terms, anyone who obtains the complete phrase can usually restore the wallet in compatible software and attempt to move its assets.

That makes the phrase a bearer secret. A support employee, exchange representative, hardware-wallet company, website, mobile app, or friend should never need to see it. Legitimate recovery flows ask you to enter words only into the wallet device or wallet software you intentionally chose, not into a support chat, web form, screen-sharing session, or troubleshooting tool.
Storage has two separate goals:
- Confidentiality: prevent anyone else from learning the complete phrase.
- Availability: ensure you can recover after a fire, flood, lost device, move, or family emergency.
A backup that is secret but destroyed is useless; a backup that survives a fire but is photographed by a stranger is dangerous. The right method balances both properties for your living situation, threat model, and ability to perform a recovery correctly.

Paper, metal, and hardware wallets compared
No authoritative source provides a single numeric failure rate or lifespan figure that fairly compares paper, metal, and hardware wallets. The table therefore uses qualitative differences established in manufacturer and Bitcoin security guidance.
| Method | Environmental durability | If someone discovers it | Setup and recovery | Online-attack resistance | Emergency accessibility | Typical cost profile |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper recovery sheet | Low to moderate; vulnerable to fire, water, fading, tearing, and misplacement | Complete phrase can generally restore the wallet | Simple; write, verify, and restore in compatible software or a device | Strong if created and kept offline | High when the location is known and reachable | Very low; usually no special purchase |
| Metal plate or letter-tile backup | Higher; designed to resist common fire, water, and wear hazards | Complete metal record is still an unencrypted bearer secret | More setup effort; recovery is conceptually the same as paper | Strong if created and kept offline | High if stored where you can legally and physically access it | Purchase required; model and price vary |
| Hardware wallet plus physical phrase backup | Device durability varies; the physical backup determines long-term recoverability | Phrase exposure can compromise funds even if the device remains locked | Device-assisted signing is convenient; restoration still depends on the phrase | Reduces many malware and remote-signing paths because keys stay offline | Requires the device or a compatible recovery path, plus the phrase | Purchase required; model, firmware, and chain support vary |
A hardware wallet is not a replacement for a backup record. It protects transaction signing by keeping keys away from a connected computer, but the recovery phrase remains the fallback when the device fails.
How to create a paper backup safely
Generate and record it offline
Initialize the wallet on the intended device in a private room, away from visitors, security cameras, webcams, smart displays, and phones. Write each word by hand on the wallet’s supplied recovery sheet or another durable archival sheet. Do not type the phrase into a computer, phone note, password manager, printer, cloud document, or email draft. Do not take a photograph, even temporarily; automatic photo backup can create copies you forget exist.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsVerify spelling, order, and any checksum
Compare the written record with the device’s verification flow. Check every word, its spelling, and its position. If the wallet asks you to select words or re-enter them, complete that process rather than skipping it. Some phrase standards include a checksum; a wallet’s built-in verification is the appropriate way to confirm that the complete sequence is usable. A phrase with one transposed or misspelled word may restore a different wallet—or no wallet at all.
Protect paper from people and the environment
Keep the sheet where visitors, cleaners, contractors, landlords, roommates, cameras, and casual family access cannot reach it. A locked drawer, private safe, or safety-deposit box can be suitable when its access rules fit your recovery plan. A fire-resistant container helps with heat but does not make a phrase secret: anyone who can open the container can read it.
Paper is practical because it is inexpensive and easy to replace before funds are deposited. Its weaknesses are physical: it can burn, become unreadable after water damage, fade in sunlight, tear during a move, or be thrown away as ordinary paperwork. Inspect its legibility during scheduled security checks without photographing or digitizing it.
When a metal backup is worth the extra effort
What metal improves
Metal plates and letter-tile systems are designed to withstand common fire, water, corrosion, and handling hazards better than ordinary paper. Ledger recommends writing the phrase on durable fireproof and waterproof metal and keeping multiple copies in separate secure locations. Trezor describes its Keep Metal approach as an environment-proof backup concept. These recommendations address availability after a disaster, not secrecy.

- DURABLE AND INDESTRUCTIBLE: Made with grade 304 Steel, it's the long term solution to helping you safely store and backup your wallet’s seed phrase due to its resistance to corrosion. The various screws present in the tablet help protect it against deformation. It is also designed to have a fireproof threshold of house fires.
What metal does not improve
Metal does not encrypt the phrase. A person who finds a complete plate or correctly assembled tile record has the same recovery capability as someone who finds the words on paper. Do not engrave identifying labels such as “crypto seed” on the outside, and do not store the plate beside a passphrase or PIN that supplies the missing factor.
Assemble and check a metal record
- Prepare the phrase in a private location and keep cameras and connected devices out of the room.
- Transfer every word and its position to the plate or tile system according to that product’s instructions.
- Check spelling and order against the wallet’s recovery-verification process before relying on the metal record.
- Close, lock, or otherwise secure the container. Treat loose tiles as sensitive material; a partial set can reveal useful clues.
- Store a second copy only in a genuinely independent secure location, such as a separate safe or institutionally controlled box.
Separate locations reduce the chance that one burglary or disaster destroys every copy. They also create more places to protect, so a second copy is beneficial only when both locations are private and controlled.
What a hardware wallet protects—and what it cannot
Offline signing
Hardware wallets keep signing keys in a dedicated device and require user interaction to approve transactions. Bitcoin.org’s wallet-management criteria describe a “push” model in which computer malware cannot sign a transaction without user input. This design reduces exposure to malware on a connected computer: software can request a transaction, but the device is expected to show the details and wait for your physical confirmation.
The recovery phrase remains essential
A hardware wallet can be lost, damaged, reset after a forgotten PIN, discontinued, or rendered unusable by a failure. The phrase is what lets you restore the wallet on a replacement device or compatible software. Keep it separate from the device; storing both together means one thief or disaster can remove both your signing device and your recovery path.
Can the phrase be stored “in” the hardware wallet?
The device uses the phrase to derive the wallet’s keys, but relying on the device as the only place the phrase exists defeats recovery planning. If the device is destroyed or unavailable, you need a physical record. Never enter the phrase into a website, phone note, cloud drive, support chat, or computer merely because a prompt claims it is required for troubleshooting.
A secure setup procedure
- Choose the wallet and private workspace. Use the intended device, check its authenticity through the manufacturer’s normal process, and work away from cameras and observers.
- Generate the wallet. Let the device create the recovery phrase. Do not import a phrase supplied by a stranger, seller, website, or pre-filled card.
- Write every word in order. Use the supplied sheet or a durable archival medium. Keep the screen and written record out of camera view.
- Complete backup verification. Use the device’s recovery-check or confirmation flow and correct any discrepancy before receiving funds.
- Choose the primary location. Use a private, physically protected place that you can reach during an emergency and that ordinary visitors cannot access.
- Separate additional secrets. If you use a wallet passphrase, keep it in a different secure location. A phrase and its passphrase stored together provide little additional protection.
- Document controlled redundancy. If you make a second copy, record how trusted heirs can locate it without writing the phrase in the instructions. The location map should identify the custodian and access procedure, not the secret itself.
- Test before funding heavily. Create a small test wallet, perform a recovery on a spare or reset device, and confirm the expected addresses before depending on a new backup format or advanced policy.
Where to keep the record
Home safe or lockbox
A home safe or lockbox can protect a paper or metal record from casual access and some environmental hazards. Consider who knows the combination, whether the safe is bolted down, how it behaves in a fire, and whether you can open it during a power outage or evacuation. A safe is a container, not an encryption system.
Safety-deposit box or other separate site
An institutionally controlled box can provide geographic separation from a home disaster. Confirm opening hours, identification requirements, successor access, and whether your heirs can legally retrieve the contents. Do not put the only copy somewhere you cannot reach when banks or offices are closed.

Two locations
Two independent locations can improve resilience against one fire, flood, burglary, or move. The locations should not share the same key, combination, household staff, or obvious labeling. More copies increase the number of attack surfaces, so make only as many as you can audit.

Additional wallet passphrases
A passphrase creates a different wallet derived from the same recovery phrase. Keep it separate from the phrase and document its existence and recovery procedure without exposing it. If the passphrase is forgotten, the phrase alone may restore an empty or different wallet; there is no central reset service.
Shamir Secret Sharing
Shamir-style schemes divide recovery material into multiple shares so that only a chosen threshold can reconstruct it. This can reduce the impact of one stolen share, but it introduces more pieces, locations, inventories, and procedures. Every share must be documented accurately, and the threshold must remain achievable if one custodian dies or one location is destroyed.
Multisignature wallets
Multisignature setups distribute spending authority among several keys. They can reduce dependence on one signer, but recovery requires the correct wallet policy, cosigners, derivation details, and backup records. A seed alone may not identify the policy in some designs. BIP-388 warns that losing policy information can permanently strand funds even when a seed survives.
Use splitting or multisignature only with a written recovery plan and a rehearsed test recovery that uses a small wallet. The exercise should confirm which shares, devices, policy files, and cosigners are required without exposing the live wallet’s secret.
Recovery after losing a device or suspecting exposure
If the hardware wallet is lost or broken
Acquire a compatible replacement through the normal manufacturer channel, verify its authenticity, and restore using the physical recovery phrase. Confirm that the restored addresses match records from the original wallet before moving substantial funds. If a passphrase or multisignature policy was used, you also need those separate components.
If the phrase may have been seen
Treat exposure as a compromise, not a possibility to monitor indefinitely. On a trusted, clean wallet setup, create a new wallet with a new phrase and move funds to it. Do not reuse the exposed phrase, and do not enter it into a website to “check” whether it was stolen. If the wallet uses multisignature or a passphrase, follow the documented incident procedure for every affected component.

If a word is missing or unreadable
Do not guess repeatedly or publish the partial phrase for help. Check whether another independently secured copy exists and whether the wallet’s verification records identify the missing position. If no complete backup remains, recovery may be impossible; blockchain transactions cannot be reversed by customer support.
Maintenance without creating new copies
- Inspect paper or metal records on a schedule for fading, corrosion, water damage, loose tiles, and unreadable characters.
- Review who can access each location after a move, renovation, job change, divorce, death, or change in household staff.
- Verify that heirs know the access procedure and the difference between the phrase, a PIN, and a passphrase, without giving them unnecessary exposure.
- Check that replacement hardware supports the wallet’s networks and recovery format before an emergency occurs; model, firmware, chain compatibility, and pricing change over time.
- Destroy obsolete copies securely after migrating to a new phrase. A discarded sheet or spare plate remains a live secret until rendered unreadable.
Common mistakes and the fix for each
| Mistake | Why it fails | Safer practice |
|---|---|---|
| Photographing the phrase | Images may sync to multiple devices and accounts | Write it offline and keep only controlled physical copies |
| Saving it in email, notes, or cloud storage | Account takeover or malware can expose the complete secret | Use paper or metal kept offline |
| Typing it into a support form | Anyone receiving the phrase can attempt recovery | End the interaction; legitimate support does not need it |
| Storing phrase and passphrase together | One discovery defeats the additional factor | Separate locations and access records |
| Keeping every copy in one safe | One disaster or burglary removes all backups | Use independent secure locations when redundancy is needed |
| Assuming a metal plate is encrypted | Metal improves durability, not confidentiality | Restrict physical access exactly as you would for paper |
| Trying an unfamiliar split scheme with valuable funds | Missing shares or policy data can make recovery impossible | Test with a small wallet and document the full procedure |
Choosing the right method for your situation
Choose paper when simplicity is the priority
Paper suits a first wallet, a modest balance, or anyone who can maintain a genuinely private, dry, protected location. Verify it carefully and consider a second copy only when you can secure both locations.
Choose metal when disaster resistance matters
Metal is appropriate when fire, flooding, frequent moves, or long-term storage are credible risks. It costs more and takes more setup work, but it is less likely to become unreadable after ordinary environmental damage. It does not change the consequences of theft.
Choose a hardware wallet for regular signing
A hardware wallet is useful when you transact enough to benefit from offline key isolation and on-device approval. Pair it with a physical phrase backup; the device is for controlled signing, while the backup is for recovery.
Use advanced designs only when you can operate them
Secret sharing and multisignature can reduce a single point of failure, but they are operational systems rather than magic storage upgrades. If you cannot explain the recovery threshold, policy data, custodian responsibilities, and test procedure to your future self or heirs, use a simpler design.
The practical standard
Keep the complete phrase offline, private, legible, and recoverable. Verify it when created, protect it from both people and environmental damage, separate any passphrase, and rehearse recovery before the balance becomes important. A durable medium helps only if the record remains secret; a hardware wallet helps only if its physical backup survives. Treat every complete copy as equivalent to the wallet itself.
