To stop YouTube videos starting while you scroll on iPhone, turn off Playback in feeds. To prevent a related video starting when the current one ends, turn off Autoplay. They are separate settings in the YouTube app. You can also disable video previews system-wide in iPhone Settings.
Stop videos from playing while you browse YouTube
YouTube’s inline player can start videos muted with captions as you scroll through Home and search results. Change its feed setting to stop those previews:

- Open the YouTube app and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings, then General.
- Tap Playback in feeds.
- Select Off.
YouTube also offers Wi-Fi only if you want previews on Wi-Fi but not while using mobile data. Its documented choices are Always on, Wi-Fi only, and Off; availability can vary by device or format.

Stop the next video from starting automatically
This setting controls what happens after a video finishes, rather than previews while scrolling. YouTube defines Autoplay as playing another related video after the current one ends. Turn it off using either route:

- In the app, tap your profile picture, then Settings > Autoplay, and switch it off.
YouTube says Autoplay settings can differ between devices, so check the iPhone app even if the feature is off on a computer or another device. Autoplay can also be unavailable to change on a supervised account if a parent or guardian disabled it. YouTube says it is off by default for users aged 13–17, who can turn it on or off.
Turn off video previews across iPhone apps
For a broader system-level option, open the iPhone Settings app and go to Accessibility > Motion > Auto-Play Video Previews, then turn it off. Apple describes this control as affecting app previews, including those in the App Store. YouTube documents its feed-preview and next-video controls separately, so use the YouTube settings above for those specific behaviors.

If a video still starts on its own
- It starts as you scroll: Check Playback in feeds in YouTube’s General settings.
- It starts after a video ends: Check Autoplay on the watch screen or in YouTube Settings.
- You cannot change Autoplay: A parent or guardian may have disabled it for a supervised account.
YouTube also says next-video Autoplay stops after inactivity—30 minutes on a mobile network or four hours on Wi-Fi. Scrolling past the player, typing a comment, or entering a search also prevents the next video from automatically playing.
Menu names or placement may differ as YouTube and iOS change. The key distinction remains: Playback in feeds controls previews while browsing; Autoplay controls the video that follows the one you watched.
