AI video tools can turn an existing still into a short moving shot, giving creators more control over a scene’s starting composition than text-to-video alone. The practical shift is from inventing an entire scene with a prompt to animating a chosen image with directions for camera movement and subject action. These clips are best treated as material for an edit—such as B-roll, a cutaway, a transition, or a marketing visual—not as a replacement for a complete production and review workflow.
What image-to-video AI does—and how it differs from text-to-video
Image-to-video starts with a photo, illustration, AI-generated image, or other static graphic and generates motion from it. Text-to-video starts from a written description and generates a scene without that chosen still as its visual starting point. Adobe describes uploading an image and directing motion; Runway says its input image serves as the first frame and provides composition, subject, lighting, and style information. In Runway’s documented workflow, a prompt can therefore concentrate on what should move and how the camera should move, rather than restating the whole scene. This is a practical interpretation of vendor documentation, not a claim that every model works internally the same way. Adobe Firefly image-to-video · Runway prompting guide

How a still becomes a usable shot
1. Choose the starting image
Begin with a still whose composition, subject, and visual style are already close to what the finished shot needs. Adobe describes using photos, illustrations, AI-generated images, and other static graphics. Runway cautions that artifacts in the source can become more pronounced during generation, so inspect faces, hands, edges, and other important details before animating.

Describe the movement, rather than using the prompt to re-create details already visible in the image. Runway offers this as a starting structure: “The camera [motion description] as the subject [action]. [Additional descriptions]” It does not require that formula; it also documents sequential natural-language instructions or timestamps for actions that need ordering. A useful direction might identify a slow camera push and a particular subject movement, while avoiding several conflicting actions in one short shot.

3. Set the shot’s framing and motion controls
Adobe’s documented workflow includes choosing resolution and aspect ratio, selecting camera movement such as pan, zoom, or tilt, and optionally supplying a final-frame image. These controls let the creator define more than the prompt alone, although the available choices and output specifications depend on the selected model.
4. Preview, export, and finish in an editor
Adobe describes exporting a short MP4 clip. Review it for visual artifacts, unintended motion, and whether the action fits the intended duration; then trim and place it in the surrounding edit. Generated motion is a shot-level asset, so timing, sound, transitions, and continuity with adjacent footage still require editorial decisions.
Where generated motion fits in production
Adobe documents image-to-video uses including B-roll, cutaways, transitions, animated product imagery, presentations, campaigns, social content, mood boards, and backgrounds. Its examples also include animated water, atmospheric overlays, motion graphics, and landscape, plant, or animal B-roll. These are practical places to fill a visual gap or communicate an idea, but an appealing generated shot is not automatically a continuity match for a particular production.

- Transitions and backgrounds: Create a moving visual bridge or atmospheric layer for an edit or presentation.
- Concept visuals: Explore a mood or communicate an idea before committing to a full shoot or animation pipeline.
In each case, the still supplies a deliberate visual anchor; the generated clip supplies a possible motion treatment. The editor remains responsible for selecting, trimming, and integrating the result.
Extending a shot: continuity is still an editing problem
Runway documents a way to build a longer sequence from generated clips: extract the last frame of one generation and use it as the image input for the next. The approach carries a visual reference across generations, but it does not make the join invisible by itself. Runway’s guide instructs users to combine the clips in a video editor, adjust timing, and remove the shared frame. Check the join for changes in subject appearance, composition, or motion, and decide whether the seam works at the intended edit point. Runway’s prompting guide and its Gen-4.5 documentation describe the relevant sequence-extension workflow.
What to check before relying on a generated clip
Source-image quality
Use a clean, sufficiently clear starting image. Runway warns that existing visual artifacts may be intensified; it specifically cautions that blurry hands or faces can become more pronounced. This is a documented risk, not a stated fixed failure rate.

Action and duration
Match the requested action sequence to the clip duration. If a shot is short, a compact movement is easier to direct than a series of events that cannot comfortably fit in the available time.

Inspect the result alongside the footage or graphics around it. A generated clip can serve as a standalone insert yet still fail to match a neighboring shot’s lighting, motion, or subject details. For extended sequences, review the join in the editor rather than assuming reuse of a prior frame resolves continuity.
Rights and access
Adobe says users must have rights to uploaded images. Its Firefly feature page describes the Firefly model as trained on licensed and public-domain content, and separately says commercial use of generated video depends on the uploaded source image not violating copyright, trademark, privacy, publicity, or other rights. These are Adobe’s statements about its service, not a general legal guarantee for every model or source image. Adobe also says feature availability can vary by location, user type, regulatory requirements, and plan. Check the current terms and availability for the model and account you intend to use. How to compare image-to-video tools for a real workflow
Official product descriptions can establish controls and documented limits, but they do not establish which tool produces the best-looking result, offers the best value, or runs fastest. Compare the capabilities that matter to the shot you need:
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Starting-point control | Does the tool animate a chosen still, generate from text, or offer both? Image-to-video is useful when retaining a specific visual starting point matters. |
| Motion direction | Check documented camera and subject controls, sequential prompting, and optional first- or last-frame controls. |
| Continuity workflow | Find out whether the tool supports reference frames or sequence extension, and what editorial work is required to join clips. |
| Output constraints | Check clip duration, resolution, aspect ratio, and export format. Adobe describes short MP4 output and says supported duration and resolution depend on the selected model. |
| Rights and access | Review uploaded-image permissions, model-specific terms, account and plan conditions, regional access, and applicable regulation. |
On the evidence documented here, Adobe Firefly is a named option for generating motion from a still, while Runway’s guides provide concrete prompting and sequence-extension instructions. Those descriptions are not a controlled head-to-head quality test, so they do not support a quality ranking.
Product availability changes
Product access is time-sensitive. OpenAI states that the Sora product is no longer available as of April 26, 2026; its Sora 2 system card also discusses synchronized audio, steerability, realism, and risks involving likeness or misleading generated material. The original Sora page carries the same discontinuation notice. Sora should therefore be understood here as a discontinued product, not a currently usable option.
