If a wanted call never rings, check which layer is handling it: your phone may have blocked the number, silenced or screened an unknown caller, applied a spam filter, allowed calls only from contacts, or relied on a separate carrier filter. Review these controls in order; changing one does not necessarily disable the others.
First, identify what happened to the call
A call can be blocked, silenced or screened, or sent to voicemail. Those outcomes can look similar if you only notice that the phone did not ring. Check your recent calls and voicemail, and look for a screening or spam label. Then check both the phone’s own settings and any carrier filtering service you use.

On iPhone, review blocked contacts and unknown-call settings
Open Apple’s current guide to identifying, screening, filtering, and blocking calls and follow the instructions for your iOS version. Review the blocked contacts list for the caller’s number, then inspect the unknown-caller controls. Apple’s guide also explains how to mark a caller as known. Menu names and available options can vary by iOS release, so use the current instructions rather than relying on a path from an older version.

Review blocked numbers
In the Google Phone app, use its blocked-number controls to see whether the caller was added to the list and remove the number if it should be allowed. Google notes that numbers outside your contacts can still call under its number-blocking behavior; a caller not being saved as a contact does not by itself mean the number is blocked. See Google Phone’s instructions for blocking or unblocking numbers.

Review caller ID and spam protection
If the number is not blocked, check the Phone app’s caller ID and spam settings. Spam protection is a separate control from the blocked-number list and may affect how calls are identified or handled. Google’s instructions are at Turn caller ID and spam protection on or off. Features and menu paths depend on the Android version, device, and installed phone app; another manufacturer’s dialer may use different labels.
Check for a contacts-only rule
Some services can restrict calls and texts to people in your contacts. If you use Google Fi, check whether “Only receive calls and texts from your phone contacts” is enabled. Add the wanted number to contacts or turn off the rule if you want calls from unsaved numbers to reach you. Google Fi documents that this setting is suspended for 48 hours after a 911 call, allowing unknown first responders to call back.

Check your carrier’s filter separately
A carrier’s call-filter service can have its own block and allow controls, independent of the phone settings. Open the carrier’s app or account and look for a blocked list, allowed-number list, and spam-filter options.

- Xfinity: Its Call Guard guidance describes separate call-blocking and filtering settings.
These are examples of carrier-specific controls, not features that work identically across all providers. Follow the instructions for your own carrier and service.

If the call is still not getting through
- Check recent calls and voicemail to see whether the call was screened or routed away rather than blocked.
- Confirm the number is not on the phone’s blocked list, then review unknown-caller or spam controls.
- If you use a contacts-only rule, add the caller or disable the restriction.
- Check the carrier’s app or account for its own block, allow, and spam settings.
- If the settings do not explain the problem, consult the current support instructions for your phone, phone app, and carrier. The exact controls depend on your device, software, installed dialer, carrier, and country.
