Choose by subject and manuscript type: use arXiv for scholarly work in one of its served fields, bioRxiv for life-sciences research, and medRxiv for eligible research in medical, clinical, and related health sciences. None of the three repositories peer-reviews a paper before posting. Screening can check scope and suitability, but a posted preprint is not proof that its findings are valid or accepted by a journal.
How to choose a preprint server
- Start with the paper’s subject. Identify the field the work primarily contributes to and the researchers you want to reach.
- Check the article type. A repository may cover the subject but exclude the manuscript’s format.
- Review screening, safety, and submission requirements. These differ, particularly for medical research, author accounts, and licenses.
- Check the intended journal or conference separately. Repository eligibility does not guarantee that a target venue permits posting, or that its anonymous-review rules will be preserved.

When should you use arXiv?
Consider arXiv when the work belongs in one of its served scientific categories and is a scholarly research contribution. Its guidance describes the expected standard as “topical and refereeable scientific contributions that follow accepted standards of scholarly communication.” Check that the chosen category fits the paper, then review the account, possible endorsement, submission-format, and license requirements in the official submission guidance.

Do not treat acceptance by arXiv’s moderators as certification of the paper’s conclusions. arXiv says plainly: “The arXiv moderation process is not a peer-review process.” Moderators can assess suitability and topicality, and can reclassify or decline a submission. arXiv moderation guidance

Is bioRxiv right for your paper?
Use bioRxiv for life-sciences research. Work from mathematics, physical sciences, or social sciences is appropriate only when it has direct relevance to life sciences; otherwise, choose a repository whose scope fits the contribution. bioRxiv about page

Is medRxiv right for your paper?
Choose medRxiv for eligible work in medical, clinical, or related health sciences, after checking that the manuscript format is allowed. Its guidance covers research articles, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, data and methods articles, and clinical research design protocols; it excludes, among other formats, case reports and narrative reviews. Medical preprints need especially careful communication. medRxiv warns: “They should not be relied on to guide clinical practice or health-related behavior and should not be reported in news media as established information.” Posting does not establish clinical validity. Authors should also attend to ethics and patient privacy; the repository’s guidance calls for removing potentially identifying patient information where needed. Can a medical paper go on bioRxiv?
Possibly, if its central contribution is life-sciences research and it fits bioRxiv’s scope. “Medical” alone does not determine the right repository: a study focused on human health may fit medRxiv, while basic biological research may fit bioRxiv. Check each service’s current scope and the exact article type rather than assuming that any health-related manuscript is eligible for both.

What to check before you post
- Target venue: Review the journal’s or conference’s current preprint, prior-publication, and anonymous-review policies. A repository’s acceptance rules cannot answer those venue-specific questions.
- Manuscript fit: Confirm both the subject scope and permitted article type on the repository’s official policy pages.
- Rights and workflow: For arXiv, understand the required irrevocable distribution license and whether registration or endorsement applies to you.
- Health and privacy risks: For medRxiv submissions, check trial-registration and ethics requirements, and remove patient details that could identify someone.
- How you describe the preprint: Make clear that it has not been peer-reviewed; for medical findings, do not present it as established guidance for care or health behavior.
