Yes—you can deploy solo or with a squad in the upcoming DMZ mode for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, scheduled for release on October 23, 2026. Solo is the better fit if you want to set your own pace and accept having no teammate beside you; a squad is better if you value coordination and shared objectives. The available preview does not establish that either approach is easier or safer, or confirm the final revive and matchmaking rules.
What’s confirmed about Modern Warfare 4 DMZ
Activision and Infinity Ward describe DMZ as an extraction shooter included with Modern Warfare 4. Players can deploy solo or with a squad, then pursue missions or emergent objectives while looting, fighting, negotiating, and trying to extract. The preview also describes persistent inventory and an upgradeable Forward Operating Base (FOB) as part of longer-term progression. Xbox Wire’s June 7, 2026 developer interview covers the mode and its design.

An Activision-authored PlayStation Blog overview published October 5, 2026 names three ways to deploy: Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, and free exploration. It places the mode in Hajin and says the FOB is planned to include over a dozen stations that expand as players progress. The overview identifies a PlayStation 5 version; DMZ is described as part of the game, not as a separately detailed product.

The announced release date is October 23, 2026, according to both official previews. Rules and availability can change before launch, so treat the details below as a comparison of the announced mode rather than a complete account of final mechanics.

Solo vs. squad: the practical trade-off
| What matters | Solo | Squad |
|---|---|---|
| Pace and decisions | You set your own route and pace without coordinating with teammates. That follows from the solo deployment option; the preview does not describe a separate solo ruleset. | You can coordinate routes, objectives, and responses with teammates. The preview confirms squad deployment but gives no detailed team rules. |
| Exposure and recovery | You enter without a human teammate beside you. Joe Cecot, Studio Multiplayer Creative Director, says, “But if you’re a solo player, there’s no one to revive you.” The preview does not define the final revive rules. | Teammates may be able to help, but the current preview does not confirm how downed or eliminated players can be revived or recovered. |
| Activities | Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, and free exploration are announced options. No source says any is exclusive to solo play. | The same options can provide shared goals, but party-size scaling and squad-specific objective rules are not stated. |
| Social play | You can make decisions without party coordination. The preview does not specify solo communication tools or matchmaking. | Playing with others creates opportunities for coordination and shared experiences. The developers discuss emergent player interactions, but that does not mean every encounter will be cooperative. |
Choose solo if independence matters most
Solo makes sense if you prefer to choose where to go, when to engage, and how long to spend on an objective without aligning plans with a party. It also means you should be comfortable entering without a teammate available to help. Cecot describes the intended solo experience as “a very interesting and dangerous world.” That is a design description, not a promise about a particular difficulty level or a measurable survival rate.
Choose a squad if coordination is part of the fun
A squad is a natural fit if you want to plan objectives with other players or share the decisions and stories that emerge during a deployment. But do not assume that teaming up makes the mode categorically safer: the previews provide no comparative survival data, difficulty scaling, or final account of revives. Squad size, squad-fill settings, and assimilation rules are also not established for the upcoming mode.

Are missions different for solo players?
The announced choices—Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, and free exploration—are presented as deployment options, not as solo-only or squad-only activities. The sources do not say whether mission objectives or difficulty change with party size. Choose based on whether you want a structured goal or a more open-ended outing, rather than assuming one activity requires a particular group size.
What the older Modern Warfare II DMZ did differently
Earlier Modern Warfare II DMZ documentation is useful only as historical context. Activision described that version as a single-life mode: backpack items were lost on death, a solo player who went down had no squadmate as a safety net, and teammates had opportunities to revive a downed or eliminated player. It also described faction missions, side objectives, AI and enemy Operators, looting, exfiltration, and optional assimilation in squad-based matches. These are MWII-era mechanics, not confirmed rules for the new DMZ. See the 2022 Call of Duty Staff overview.

At the original MWII DMZ launch, Season 01 patch notes listed Trios, let solos or duos choose not to fill their squad, and described assimilation up to six players per squad. None of those launch settings should be carried over to Modern Warfare 4 without a new official confirmation.

- Whether assimilation will be available, and under what limits.
- What happens to carried items on death or a failed extraction.
- Whether missions or difficulty scale with party size.
- Whether solo and squad players share matchmaking or use separate queues.
Joe Cecot characterizes an extraction shooter’s progression as a “hero’s journey” that can last months and include ups and downs. That speaks to the mode’s intended longer arc, alongside the announced persistent inventory and FOB—not to a specific item-loss or recovery rule for Modern Warfare 4 DMZ.
