NASA identifies Mars’s lower gravity as one contributing factor; tectonic extension and faulting in the Tharsis region also helped magma rise. The available sources explain these factors qualitatively, not how much each contributed.
How big is Olympus Mons?
NASA describes Olympus Mons as about 27 km high and more than 600 km across at its base. Those rounded dimensions are not a measurement from Earth’s sea level: Mars has its own elevation reference, so the meaning of a height depends on the reference surface used. NASA’s 2024 report gives the same approximate height and base width for the volcano.

Its footprint is immense as well as its elevation. A 1984 paper record in NASA’s Technical Reports Server gives a diameter greater than 600 km and an area greater than 3.2 × 105 km2, excluding the extensive aureole deposits around the volcano. The diameter and area come from that archived technical record; they are not a separate height measurement.
Olympus Mons also has a steep basal scarp, reported by NASA/JPL-Caltech/USGS as reaching up to 6 km high. This is a feature at the mountain’s edge, not an additional amount to add to its overall height.

How does a shield volcano grow so large?
Repeated eruptions build a broad mountain
Olympus Mons is a shield volcano: a broad volcanic edifice built as lava accumulates over time. Its exceptional scale reflects both its height and its enormous base, rather than a narrow peak rising from a small footprint. NASA describes the summit as a complex of calderas—large depressions likely formed through repeated collapse as magma drained during eruptions on the volcano’s flanks.
Lower gravity is one contributing factor
Mars’s lower gravity helps explain how magma could be pushed to great heights and how a volcanic structure could grow so tall. NASA’s educational explanation presents this as a factor, not a complete explanation on its own. The sources do not quantify gravity’s share of Olympus Mons’s height.

What role did Tharsis tectonics play?
Olympus Mons stands in the Tharsis region, a vast volcanic province marked by lava flows and tectonic faulting. NASA/JPL explains that extension—stretching of the crust—created conditions that allowed magma to rise and feed very large volcanoes, including Olympus Mons. In this account, fractures and magma supply complement the effects of gravity and repeated volcanic construction.
It is too simple to say that Olympus Mons grew tall just because Mars lacks Earth-like moving tectonic plates. The cited NASA sources specifically support lower gravity and Tharsis extension and faulting; they do not establish the absence of plate tectonics as a sufficient standalone cause.

Geographically, NASA places Olympus Mons west of the main Tharsis rise, rather than describing it simply as sitting on the rise’s western flank. The region also includes the aligned Tharsis Montes—three different volcanoes. NASA/JPL-Caltech/USGS reports those three at about 350–400 km in diameter and about 17 km above the surrounding plain; those figures do not describe Olympus Mons.

NASA’s sources describe a long history of volcanism in Tharsis and ancient volcano-tectonic structures in the Olympus Mons region, but they do not establish a specific formation age or last-eruption date for Olympus Mons. They therefore do not support a precise claim about when it formed or whether it is active today.

NASA/JPL-Caltech/USGS also describes the volcano’s aureole deposits, the extensive material around its base. An archived NASA technical record proposes that gravity-driven sliding and spreading over a weak basal detachment may explain these deposits. That is a proposed interpretation, not a settled explanation for the volcano’s height.
