To turn off autoplay, use the control for the kind of playback you want to stop: YouTube’s switch stops the next related video, Netflix has separate settings for previews and next episodes, and some social apps offer only limited or changeable controls. The steps below distinguish feed videos, browsing previews, and episodes that start after a show ends.
First, identify what is playing automatically
- Next video: another video starts when the one you chose ends. YouTube’s Autoplay switch controls this behavior.
- Browsing preview: a clip starts while you browse titles. Netflix calls this setting Autoplay Previews.
- Next episode: the following episode starts after an episode ends. Netflix provides a separate Autoplay Next Episode setting.
- Feed video: a video begins as you scroll through a social app. Available controls vary by service and may change as apps are updated.
Turn off YouTube’s next-video autoplay
YouTube defines Autoplay as playing another related video after the current video ends. Its control is available in the player, with additional settings paths on mobile and TV. Because the setting may differ by device, switch it off on each device you use.

- Phone or tablet: Open a video and turn off the Autoplay switch at the top of the player. You can also open Profile picture > Settings > Autoplay in the Android or iOS app.
- Computer: Open a video and turn off the Autoplay switch at the bottom of the player.
- TV: In the YouTube app, open Settings and select Autoplay.
- Casting: Use the Autoplay control in the control bar on the connected mobile device.

Choose which Netflix autoplay to stop
Netflix separates previews played while browsing from the next episode played after a show. Both settings belong to a profile, so change the setting for the profile you use.

Stop previews while browsing
In the Netflix app, select a profile, open Manage Profiles, choose the profile, and turn off Autoplay Previews. On the web, go to Account > Profiles > [profile] > Playback settings and disable the preview option. Netflix notes that iPads and some older TVs and streaming devices do not support preview autoplay.

Stop the next episode from starting
For the same profile, open Manage Profiles and turn off Autoplay Next Episode. On the web, go to Account > Profiles > [profile] > Playback settings and disable the next-episode option.

Check the reported controls in Facebook, Bluesky, and X
The following social-app routes were reported by TechCrunch on September 10, 2025, rather than confirmed here against current official help pages. Menu names and locations can vary by app version, device, or web interface; if a path differs, look in the app’s media, playback, or data-use settings.

TechCrunch reported these routes for video playback controls:
- Settings and privacy > Preferences > Media for feed and story playback.
- Settings and privacy > Accessibility, display, and languages > Data usage > Video autoplay.
- Display and sound > Media previews as an additional control.
Bluesky
Open Settings > Content and media > Autoplay videos and GIFs, according to the same report. The route was described for the mobile menu and desktop sidebar.

What to expect from Instagram, TikTok, and Threads
September 2025 reporting did not identify a complete general autoplay-off switch for Instagram or TikTok, or an autoplay-off option for Threads. Instagram videos may start silently until you enable sound; muting is not the same as stopping videos from playing. TikTok has ways to reduce exposure to unwanted videos, but the reporting did not describe them as a full autoplay-off setting. App features can change, so these limitations reflect the cited reporting rather than a guarantee about every current version.

Facebook autoplay settings for teen accounts
In an August 2026 announcement, Meta said teens would be able to turn autoplay off and parents would be able to require that setting. The announcement describes an intended teen control; it does not establish its exact app path, current rollout status, or availability for adult accounts. Check the teen account’s current settings for availability.
