How to Stop Spam Calls That Keep Getting Through After You Enable Call Filtering

A spam warning may label a call without blocking it. This guide explains the exact iPhone and Android controls, carrier options, testing steps, missed-call recovery, and reporting process.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If spam calls still ring after you turn on call filtering, the setting may be labeling callers rather than blocking them. Check whether your phone is set to identify, screen, silence, route to voicemail, or block calls; then review the phone’s filtered lists and your carrier’s separate controls. No filter catches every call, and aggressive blocking can hide legitimate callers, so test the change against call history and voicemail.

Why a call filter can warn you without stopping the ring

“Spam,” “scam likely,” or a similar warning is usually a caller-ID result, not proof that the call has been blocked. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains that a labeled call can still reach your phone, leaving you to decide whether to answer. A filter must be configured for a stronger action—screening, silencing, sending to voicemail, or blocking—to prevent the normal ring.

Caller ID is also imperfect. Numbers can be spoofed, meaning the displayed number may not belong to the caller. Blocking one displayed number may therefore stop only that particular number while the same operation continues from new numbers. A high-quality filter can reduce nuisance calls without eliminating all of them.

First, identify the action your current setting takes

Open the relevant call settings and look for wording that describes an outcome, not just identification. “Caller ID,” “identify spam,” and “spam warning” generally label calls. “Screen,” “silence,” “filter,” “send to voicemail,” and “block” describe actions that change how the call reaches you.

CPR V5000 Call Blocker for Landline Phones - You Can Manually Block All Calls with the Big Red Button - Pre-Programmed with 5,000 Known Nuisance Numbers - Caller ID is Required
  • COMPATIBILITY: For traditional analog landline phones and services from providers such as AT&T, Verizon, Frontier Communications, CenturyLink, and Brightspeed. Not compatible with internet-based or digital phone services (VoIP), including Vonage, Ooma, Xfinity Voice, and Quantum Fiber.
  • IMPORTANT: The V5000 CPR Call Blocker requires Caller ID service and an analog telephone line. Without Caller ID, incoming numbers cannot be identified or blocked. No mains power required - just plug it into your phone line and use.
  • Powerful Blocking, Made Simple: Preloaded with 5,000 verified scam and nuisance numbers, the V5000 starts protecting you right out of the box. And if a new or spoofed number gets through, the large “BLOCK NOW” button makes it easy to instantly block it - up to 1,500 additional numbers at your command.
  • Realistic & Reliable Protection: While no device can stop 100% of spam (scammers constantly change numbers), the V5000 gives you the power to shut down repeat offenders quickly and effectively - offering more control than passive filters alone.
  • Hassle-Free Design: NO POWER supply needed, NO APP, and NO SUBSCRIPTIONS. The V5000 is easy to install, with a clear screen and loud button click for extra confidence. Designed with seniors in mind, it’s ready to use and simple to maintain. For even stronger protection, you can pair it with your phone provider’s spam filtering service.
  • Label: displays a warning while allowing the call to ring.
  • Screen: answers or intercepts an unknown call, asks for information, and lets you decide whether to take it.
  • Silence: prevents the ringtone and sends the call to voicemail or a filtered list.
  • Block: rejects the number or prevents it from reaching you through the phone’s call service.
  • Route to voicemail: keeps the call out of the ringing experience but preserves a message when the caller leaves one.

Write down one recent unwanted call’s displayed number and the exact behavior you observed. That gives you a baseline for testing a stronger setting and helps distinguish a phone setting from a carrier feature.

Stop unwanted calls on an iPhone

On current iPhone software, Apple places the relevant controls under Settings > Apps > Phone. Names and availability can vary by iOS release and region, but the controls fall into four different behaviors.

Choose between screening and silencing

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps, then Phone.
  3. Open Call Screening.
  4. Select the behavior you want: Ask Reason for Calling, Silence, or Never.

Ask Reason for Calling screens calls from unknown numbers by asking the caller for their name and reason before your phone rings. It is less disruptive than an outright block, but a genuine caller still has to respond to the prompt. Silence sends unknown callers to voicemail instead of ringing. Never leaves calls from unsaved numbers ringing normally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the Unknown Callers list

In Settings > Apps > Phone, open Unknown Callers if it is available. This option places calls from numbers the phone does not recognize into a separate list. A number can be treated as unknown simply because it is not saved in Contacts or has not otherwise been marked as known. Review this list whenever an expected call appears to have vanished.

Turn on the carrier-based Spam control

Under the same Phone settings, enable Spam when the option is present. Apple describes its behavior this way: calls identified by your carrier as potential spam or fraud are silenced, sent to voicemail, and moved to the Spam list. This is stronger than a warning, but it only applies when the carrier identifies the call as potential spam or fraud.

After enabling it, check both the Spam list and voicemail for wanted calls. If a legitimate number was classified incorrectly, use the available correction or “not spam” control. Save important numbers in Contacts and answer or return calls from legitimate numbers so the phone has a better basis for treating them as known.

  • Allow any blocked caller to ring through like normal with the Green Invite Button. Double Tap the Green Button to add VIP callers shown in Call History. Note: Caller ID Name and Number Service from your phone company is required for this model to work automatically.

Check Call Blocking & Identification

Here you can enable caller identification supplied by Apple Business Connect, a supported carrier, or a compatible caller-ID app. Identification by itself does not necessarily block a call; confirm the service’s own action settings before expecting the ring to stop.

Stop unwanted calls on Android

Android menus differ by manufacturer, operating-system version, default dialer, SIM country, and carrier. The steps below apply to the Google Phone app; another dialer may use different names or omit these controls.

Enable spam identification and filtering in Google Phone

  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Tap More (the three-dot menu).
  3. Choose Settings.
  4. Open Spam and Call Screen or Caller ID and spam, depending on the version shown.
  5. Turn on caller and spam identification.
  6. If offered, turn on Filter spam calls.

Google’s filtered-call behavior can prevent a ringtone and may not create a missed-call or voicemail notification. The call remains available in call history, and voicemail can still be checked. Do not assume that a quiet phone means no one called; inspect history after changing the setting.

Block or report an individual number

From the Phone app’s call history, select the unwanted entry and use the option to Block or Report spam. Blocking private or unidentified numbers is a separate setting and does not block every number that is merely absent from your contacts. Because spoofing is common, blocking one number may have little effect if the caller changes the displayed number.

Use automatic Call Screen on compatible Pixel phones

Some Pixel phones can answer an unknown call automatically, ask why the caller is calling, and show you a transcript or response before you decide to answer. Google documents protection choices that can include spam, possibly faked numbers, and first-time callers on supported devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Availability is conditional. Google lists automatic screening on Pixel phones in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States; manual screening is available in a broader set of countries, with some functions restricted to particular Pixel models. Device generation, operating-system version, SIM country, and region all matter. Automatic screening may not work while roaming, and Google advises against using call forwarding with it. Check Google’s current device-specific support page on the phone before relying on a particular option.

  • One-touch to Block: Locate a number and then press Block to add it to the blacklist.Better set the call blocker in series ( one end of it connected to your phone and another end to the PSTN telephone line); Though it can also be set up parallel, but not compatible with some phone systems.
  • Permanent storage of the numbers in the blacklist even power is off or telephone line is plugged out.
  • Battery free: It is line powered, no need battery. And it works with almost all single line telephones. If you find some numbers are blocked but you never mean to, then press Block and check your blacklist, then delete those numbers which like area codes or prefix numbers.

If the Phone app does not show spam or screening controls, the device, dialer, region, or carrier may not support them. Update the Phone app and operating system, then check the manufacturer’s documentation; do not install an unrelated dialer solely to obtain a feature without considering its permissions.

Ask your carrier for a separate call-blocking service

The phone’s built-in filter is only one layer. The FTC recommends checking your provider’s website or contacting customer service for call-blocking and call-labeling services. A carrier may offer network-level blocking, enhanced caller labels, or controls that work before a call reaches the handset. Names, prices, eligibility, and exact behavior vary by provider, country, plan, and sometimes line type.

Ask these specific questions:

  • Does the service label calls, silence them, reject them, or send them to voicemail?
  • Is it included with the line or billed as an additional recurring service?
  • Can you see a blocked-call log and restore a legitimate number?
  • Does it cover suspected spoofing, private numbers, or only known spam databases?
  • Will it affect short codes, medical offices, delivery services, or other automated callers?

Do not expect the carrier to stop every unwanted call. Network filters use identification systems that can miss new campaigns and can occasionally classify a legitimate caller incorrectly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider a call-blocking app carefully

The FTC lists call-blocking apps as another option. Depending on the app and your phone, an app may reject calls, silence them, send them to voicemail, or show a caller list. Before installing one, review independent ratings, the feature description, the privacy policy, and the permissions requested.

  • Contacts access: some apps read contacts to avoid blocking people you know; decide whether that data access is acceptable.
  • Call information: an app may need access to incoming numbers, call history, or voicemail-related data to classify calls.
  • Cost: some apps are free, while others charge a subscription or reserve stronger controls for a paid tier.
  • Coverage: an app’s database and operating-system integration determine which calls it can recognize or stop.
  • Recovery: choose an app that lets you inspect blocked calls and mark a number as legitimate.

No app can promise that every spam call will be stopped. Running several services at once can also produce conflicting labels or make it harder to find a wanted call, so change one layer at a time and observe the result.

Test the new setting without losing important calls

Aggressive filtering can silence a doctor’s office, school, courier, prospective employer, or family member calling from a new number. Use a controlled test rather than assuming the strongest setting is best.

  • Dual mode;In BLOCK mode you can block callers by Numbers and Names; In FAMILY mode all callers outside the FAMILY LIST are blocked; The two modes can be switched at any time as needed and NO data will be lost after switching modes.
  • Preloaded with a large number of spam numbers that have been the subject of repeated complaints ; Users can also manually add 4000+ numbers to the NUMBER LIST to build their own database ; Add 256 NAMES to block calls by name.
  • Blocks INTERNATIONAL, PRIVATE/WITHHELD, and Out of Area numbers by default; users can SET to block the entire area code or changing numbers starting with a fixed number, such as 00, 800, 855, 999, 7324, 33626, 134567, etc.
  1. Save essential numbers. Add doctors, schools, employers, delivery contacts, relatives, and service providers to Contacts. If your phone offers a “known” or favorite status, apply it where appropriate.
  2. Tell expected callers to leave voicemail. Screening and silence settings work best when legitimate callers know to identify themselves and provide a callback number.
  3. Place a test call. Use a consenting person whose number is not saved, if possible. Confirm whether the phone rings, screens, silences, or routes the call to voicemail.
  4. Inspect call history. Look for a filtered, screened, spam, or blocked-call entry. Some filtered calls do not create a normal missed-call notification.
  5. Check voicemail. A silent call may still leave a message. Review it during the first several days after changing settings.
  6. Correct mistakes. Mark a legitimate call as “not spam,” unblock the number, or add it to Contacts using the control your phone provides.

Keep the filtered-call list and voicemail in your normal routine until you are confident that important unknown callers can still reach you.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes

The phone still rings with a spam warning

The setting is probably labeling rather than blocking. Reopen the controls and select screening, silence, filtering, or blocking if that action is available. A carrier label can appear even when neither the phone nor the carrier has been configured to reject the call.

A wanted call disappeared

Check call history, the Unknown Callers or Spam list, filtered-call entries, and voicemail. Save the number, mark it as known or not spam, and adjust the filter if the caller must be able to ring directly. Ask the caller to leave a message while you verify the classification.

One blocked number keeps being replaced by others

This pattern is consistent with spoofing or number rotation. Blocking each displayed number individually is unlikely to solve it. Use carrier-level screening or a service that evaluates call patterns, while continuing to report the calls with the identifying details available.

The relevant menu is missing

Confirm which dialer handles calls, update the operating system and Phone app, and check the phone model, SIM country, and carrier. Android features and Pixel screening are not universal. iPhone labels can also differ by iOS release and region. If the control still is not present, ask the carrier what network service is available rather than following instructions for a different device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Call screening fails while traveling

Automatic Pixel screening may not operate during roaming. Call forwarding can also interfere with it. Before traveling, check the feature’s current availability for the destination and disable forwarding if Google’s instructions require that for your configuration.

  • REDUCE UNWANTED CALLS & TAKE BACK CONTROL – The CPR V100K helps reduce unwanted spam, scam and robocalls on your landline. Known nuisance numbers in the preloaded database are blocked automatically, while new unwanted callers can be blocked at the touch of a button.
  • 100,000 KNOWN NUISANCE NUMBERS PRELOADED – Includes a large database of known nuisance numbers for immediate protection. The database contains reported nuisance numbers from across the USA and is not a list of 100,000 numbers specific to your local area.
  • BLOCK NEW CALLERS WITH ONE TOUCH – Scam callers frequently change or spoof their phone numbers, so no call blocker can stop every unwanted call automatically. • SIMPLE TO USE – NO APP OR SUBSCRIPTION – Connect the V100K to your compatible landline and start taking control of unwanted calls. No app, Wi-Fi, monthly subscription or external power supply required. The large display and tactile BLOCK NOW button make it particularly easy to use.
  • IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY INFORMATION – Requires an active Caller ID service. Designed for compatible traditional analog landline services. Not compatible with many internet-based or digital VoIP telephone services. Please check your telephone service before ordering.

Several filters produce contradictory results

Temporarily leave one filtering layer active, such as the phone’s built-in control, and observe it for several days. Then add a carrier service or app only if the remaining calls justify it. This makes it possible to identify which service silenced a legitimate caller and to undo the right setting.

Report calls that continue after filtering

Reporting helps regulators and providers connect repeated campaigns, even when the displayed number is fake. Record the number that received the call, the number shown on caller ID, any callback number given by the caller, and the date and time when available. Keep voicemails or written notes that explain what the caller claimed.

Use ReportFraud.ftc.gov when you lost money or have information about a scammer. Use DoNotCall.gov to report unwanted calls when no money was lost. A report does not instantly block the number, but accurate details improve pattern tracking and enforcement.

Compare the available approaches

Approach What it can do Availability and coverage Risk to wanted calls Privacy and cost questions
Built-in iPhone controls Identify, screen unknown callers, silence unknown callers, silence carrier-identified spam, send calls to voicemail, and organize Spam or Unknown Callers lists. Depends on iOS release, region, carrier identification, and whether the number is known to the phone. Unknown legitimate callers may be screened or sent to voicemail; review the separate lists. Usually part of the phone software; carrier identification and compatible caller-ID services may have their own terms.
Google Phone and compatible Pixel controls Identify spam, filter spam calls, block or report individual numbers, and on compatible Pixel devices screen some calls automatically. Depends on phone model, operating system, dialer, SIM country, region, and roaming status. Filtered calls may not produce ordinary notifications; inspect history and voicemail. Phone-level controls have no separate app subscription, but availability and data handling follow Google, device, and carrier policies.
Carrier service May label, silence, reject, or route suspected spam before or as it reaches the phone. Varies by carrier, country, plan, line type, and service eligibility. Carrier classification can occasionally affect legitimate calls; ask how corrections and logs work. Some services are free and others charge; review the provider’s terms and retention practices.
Third-party app May block, silence, route to voicemail, classify callers, or provide a blocked-call list. Depends on operating-system permissions, the app’s database, and regional support. Rules can be overinclusive; recovery tools and a “not spam” option are important. Check contact and call-data access, privacy policy, subscription price, and cancellation terms.

There is no universal block rate or single best service established for every phone, carrier, and country. Choose based on the action you need, how much access you are willing to grant, the likelihood of missing an unknown legitimate caller, and whether the cost is acceptable.

A practical setup for most people

Start with the least disruptive control that solves the problem. If warnings are enough, keep identification enabled and ignore suspicious calls. If the ringing is the problem, use screening or silence and preserve voicemail. If calls continue at volume, add the carrier’s service after confirming its behavior. Consider a third-party app only after checking its permissions and recovery features.

Whichever combination you choose, keep important contacts current, review filtered calls and voicemail during the first week, and report persistent scams with complete details. Filtering reduces interruptions; it cannot guarantee that every unwanted call will be detected or stopped.
