Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Pause before you share. To check a political post, identify exactly what it claims, inspect who published it, trace the image or video to earlier appearances, verify the date and location with independent sources, and treat labels, metadata and AI detectors as clues rather than final verdicts. A genuine photograph can still be paired with a false caption, and an edited clip can still contain some accurate details.
What you are actually trying to verify
“Is this post fake?” is usually too broad a question. A post can contain a real file, an incorrect date, a wrong location, a misleading crop, an invented voiceover or a caption that changes the political meaning. Verification works better when you separate the claim into testable parts:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Event: Did the described incident happen?
- Time: Was it recorded on the date claimed, or is old material being reused?
- Place: Does the scene match the stated city, polling station, border or rally?
- People and actions: Are the people identified correctly, and did they do what the caption says?
- Media history: Is this the earliest available version, or has it been cropped, dubbed, slowed, stitched or reposted?
- Intent: Is there evidence that the person sharing it meant to deceive, or is the post simply mistaken?
This separation prevents a common error: calling a real but old or miscaptioned image “fake.” Describe the specific defect that the evidence supports.

A repeatable seven-step check
1. Pause and write down the claim
Do not begin by arguing with the post or forwarding it to ask whether it is true. Copy the caption, note the words spoken in the video and write a one-sentence version in your own words: who supposedly did what, where and when. Record any demand for immediate sharing, claims that “the media will not show this,” or language designed to provoke fear or outrage. Emotional intensity is a reason to slow down, not proof that a claim is false.

Separate observable facts from interpretation. “A crowd is outside a building” is different from “the crowd is stopping voters.” “A candidate appears to leave a stage” is different from “the candidate collapsed.” Each statement may require different evidence.
2. Inspect the account and source trail
Open the profile rather than relying on the post preview. Check the account name, handle, profile image, biography, location, creation date if displayed, recent posting history and stated affiliations. Ask whether the account could plausibly have been present at the event. A local reporter, election authority or participant may have direct access; an anonymous account reposting material from elsewhere does not.
Look for an original recording, a linked document or a named witness. Trace distinctive wording, a watermark, a logo, a quoted sentence or a unique description through search. The earliest version you can find is not automatically truthful, but it gives you a better chance of seeing the complete frame, original sound and first explanation of what happened. Posts that provide no source trail deserve a higher level of caution.
Check whether the account has changed its name, deletes corrections, posts contradictory locations or publishes a high volume of sensational material. These are signals for further checking, not proof of a coordinated operation. Do not infer a sharer’s intention merely from an inaccurate post.
3. Reverse-search the image or video
For a still image, save a copy or use the platform’s image-search option, then try more than one service. The UK House of Commons Library lists TinEye, Bing, Google and InVID verification among examples of tools that can locate earlier appearances. Crop out captions, borders and platform interface elements before searching, and try a second crop containing a distinctive face, sign, building or piece of clothing.
For video, capture several clear frames: an opening scene, a distinctive landmark, a sign and the moment central to the claim. Search those frames separately. A verification workflow such as InVID can help extract frames and inspect related material. Compare the earliest results you find, including dates, captions and image dimensions.

Reverse search finds where a visual has appeared; it does not authenticate the file by itself. Search engines may miss deleted posts, private accounts or newly created material. An absence of earlier results means only that your search did not find an earlier result.
4. Check date, place and caption independently
Test each element instead of accepting the post’s package of claims. Compare signs, road markings, architecture, hills, transit systems, language, uniforms and weather with maps, satellite imagery, official photographs and other independently posted material. A landmark that appears in a viral clip may identify a different city from the one in the caption.
Check the claimed date against the earliest versions of the file. Weather, seasonal vegetation, election posters, construction work and the models of vehicles visible in a scene can reveal that footage predates the event. Search reliable local reporting and official statements, but remember that silence from a news organisation is not proof that an event did not occur.
Audio requires its own check. A real video may have a translated, synthetic or rearranged voiceover. Compare lip movement, background noise and the order of visible actions with the spoken words. A short clip can omit what happened immediately before or after the moment shown.
5. Corroborate with independent sources
Seek several sources that did not simply copy the same post. Useful corroboration can include election authorities, court or legislative records, public meeting schedules, emergency-service statements, direct testimony, reputable local reporting and independently captured photographs. Independence matters: ten accounts repeating one viral video are still one underlying source.

6. Treat technical artifacts as clues, not verdicts
Zooming in may reveal mismatched shadows, impossible reflections, warped fingers, inconsistent lighting, repeated textures, abrupt cuts or audio that does not match the room. These observations can justify more checking, but a polished manipulation may contain no obvious visual error. Conversely, compression, poor lighting and motion blur can create artifacts in an authentic file.
File metadata may show a camera model, creation time, editing software or GPS coordinates. Social platforms commonly strip metadata during upload, and users can edit or forge many fields. Missing metadata therefore says little about authenticity, while present metadata should be checked against the file’s history rather than treated as conclusive.
Automated “AI detector” scores have the same limitation. They can produce false positives on compressed images, translated text, low-resolution video or unusual camera footage. Use a detector result as a prompt to inspect the source and context, never as the sole reason to accuse a person or publication.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors7. Check provenance and decide what to do
When available, C2PA Content Credentials can carry information about a file’s origin and edit history. The C2PA standard is designed to record provenance, and Google says its Gemini app can inspect credentials and describe whether a file is an unaltered camera original or modified, including the tools involved. Availability and supported file types can change.
Credentials answer a media-history question, not a political-truth question. A credentialed camera original can still be paired with a false caption, and an edited file can still depict a real event accurately. The absence of credentials does not prove that a file is fake; many legitimate workflows do not attach or preserve them.
After checking, choose a precise description:
- Supported: Independent evidence matches the event, date, place and people described.
- Misleading context: The file is genuine, but the date, location or caption is wrong or incomplete.
- Manipulated media: Editing, dubbing or compositing changes what the original recording communicated.
- Unverified: Available evidence is insufficient to establish the claim.
If the post appears to violate the service’s rules, use that service’s reporting flow. For voting dates, eligibility, polling locations or ballot procedures, consult the relevant election authority directly rather than relying on a viral post.

How to investigate an image or video in practice
For a still image
- Save the highest-resolution version available without adding a screenshot of the platform interface.
- Run a reverse image search, then repeat with crops focused on distinctive objects or text.
- Open the oldest credible results and record their publication dates and captions.
- Compare the original framing with the viral crop. Look for omitted signs, people or damage.
- Search the claimed location and date in local-language terms as well as your own language.
- Check landmarks, shadows, weather and public notices against independent material.
For a video
- Note the exact claim and the time stamp of the crucial moment.
- Extract several frames, including one with a sign or landmark, and search each.
- Look for a longer version from an identifiable uploader or broadcaster.
- Compare cuts, speed changes, subtitles, dubbing and background audio with the source version.
- Check whether the earliest copy predates the event named in the post.
- Corroborate the event with local reporting, official statements or separate recordings.
What labels and platform policies can—and cannot—tell you
Services use different labels, disclosure systems and enforcement rules. A label may indicate that a platform detected synthetic media, that a user disclosed an edit, that a fact-checking partner added context or that a post is disputed. Read the label’s definition and linked explanation instead of treating every warning as the same kind of finding.
Rules also vary by service and jurisdiction. Google’s public election guidance, for example, describes YouTube restrictions on certain voter-suppression claims and false claims about candidate eligibility. That is a platform-specific example, not a universal standard. A post that remains online has not necessarily been verified, and removal does not by itself establish every detail of a claim.
Platforms can change labels, reporting menus and election policies. Before reporting, open the current help or policy page for the service hosting the content, select the category that matches the actual problem and preserve the post’s URL or a screenshot if you may need to explain what you saw. Do not repeatedly repost harmful material merely to document it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Misinformation, disinformation and manipulated media
The European Parliament Research Service distinguishes misinformation—false or misleading information shared without demonstrated ill intent—from disinformation, which is created or spread with the aim of fooling people. The same inaccurate post can be misinformation when a voter shares it believing it is true and disinformation when an organiser deliberately manufactures it to deceive. Readers often cannot establish that intent from the post alone.
“Manipulated media” describes changes to an image, video or audio file, but manipulation is not automatically malicious. Cropping for length, adjusting colour or adding subtitles may be benign; changing a speaker’s words, moving a person into another scene or fabricating an event can materially mislead. Explain the alteration and its effect rather than applying “fake” as a blanket label.
Common traps that produce bad verdicts
“It looks strange, so it must be AI”
Compression, night lighting, camera stitching and motion blur can make genuine material look unnatural. Treat visual oddities as leads and seek an earlier file or independent account.
Best Value
“There is no metadata, so it is fabricated”
Upload systems frequently remove metadata. Its absence cannot distinguish a fake from an ordinary social-media copy.
“The platform left it up, so it is true”
Moderation decisions reflect rules, evidence available to reviewers and capacity. They are not universal fact-checks.
“A credential proves the caption”
C2PA records can describe origin and edits. They do not prove that a political interpretation, date or allegation attached to the file is accurate.
“Many accounts posted it, so it is confirmed”
Copies are not independent corroboration. Trace the accounts back to their earliest shared source.
“The sharer is a liar”
An incorrect post does not establish intent. Correct the claim and identify the evidence without making an unsupported accusation.
Why this matters during elections
False election information can affect whether people vote, where they go, whom they trust and how they interpret legitimate results. UNESCO reported in 2023 that 85% of surveyed citizens were worried about online disinformation’s impact and 87% believed misinformation had already had a major effect on their country’s political life. The survey covered more than 8,000 respondents in 16 countries where elections were due in 2024; these are perceptions, not measurements of the volume of false posts or proof that misinformation changed an election.
In the same survey, 88% called on governments and regulators to address the problem quickly through social-media regulation. That figure records respondents’ views, not evidence that any particular regulatory approach works. UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said on 6 November 2023: “Digital technology has enabled immense progress on freedom of speech. But social media platforms have also accelerated and amplified the spread of false information and hate speech, posing major risks to societal cohesion, peace and stability.”
Recommended Free Tools
UNESCO’s platform-governance guidance says that all stakeholders share responsibility for sustaining freedom of expression and the right to information while maintaining an open, safe and secure environment. For an individual user, that responsibility begins with not amplifying a claim that has not been checked and with correcting a mistake transparently when better evidence appears.
Quick Recap
A compact checklist before you share
- Can I state the exact claim in one sentence?
- Who first appears to have published this file or wording?
- Does the account have a plausible connection to the event?
- Where did this image or video appear earlier?
- Do the earliest versions match the claimed date and location?
- What independent sources confirm or contradict the event?
- Am I relying on a label, detector, visual glitch or missing metadata as if it were proof?
- Am I describing a specific error rather than calling everything “fake”?
- Do I have evidence about intent, or only evidence that the claim is inaccurate?
- Should I report it under the current rules of the hosting service?
