Open Scheduled, select the task, then choose Pause to suspend future runs or Delete to remove it. These controls manage the task’s future runs; they are not a confirmed way to stop a run already in progress. OpenAI explicitly warns against relying on pause or delete to interrupt an active team-task run, and its personal scheduled-task guidance does not document an immediate-stop control.

Find the task in ChatGPT

OpenAI’s Scheduled tasks in ChatGPT guidance lists these routes to task management:

Choose Pause or Delete

Action What it does When to choose it
Pause Suspends future runs while keeping the task. Choose this if you may want to resume the task later.
Delete Removes the task. Choose this if you no longer want the task to run.

Use the task’s controls in Scheduled to make your choice. If you pause a task, it can be resumed later. Team-task actions may depend on your permissions in the workspace; OpenAI describes these controls in its team-task guidance.

If a run is already in progress

Pausing or deleting a task is not a documented immediate-stop method for a personal task that is already running. For team tasks, OpenAI specifically says: “Don’t rely on pausing or deleting a task to interrupt an active run.” Treat a running task separately from its schedule, and do not assume these controls cancel work already underway.

Deleting a chat, task, or shared link

These are separate actions, with different effects, according to OpenAI’s scheduled-task guidance and sharing guidance:

  • Delete the associated chat: the task is paused, not deleted. Its shared task link remains.
  • Delete the task in Scheduled: the associated chat remains. The task’s shared link is removed, but copies other people have already saved remain in their accounts.
  • Delete a shared task link: do this separately if you want to stop access through a link while keeping the task itself.

Agent tasks and tasks that appear stuck

ChatGPT agent tasks

For ChatGPT agent tasks, OpenAI’s agent guidance points to the schedules page and the conversation’s schedule controls for reviewing, editing, pausing, or deleting tasks. It advises stopping a task immediately if something seems suspicious, but does not establish that pausing or deleting interrupts an active run.

Paused or waiting tasks

A task that appears stuck may be paused rather than running. OpenAI says a scheduled task may pause if it is inactive, needs additional action, or its associated chat has been deleted. An event-triggered task may also pause when an action requires approval. Check the task’s state and look for a pending approval before treating it as an ongoing run.

If you cannot find the controls

Scheduled-task availability and navigation can vary by account, app, and app version. For a team task, confirm that you are in the correct workspace and ask its administrator about your permissions if an action is missing. The cited OpenAI Help Center guidance was checked on October 3, 2026; interface labels and availability can change.
