How to Compare SAR Satellite Imagery Providers for a Mapping or Monitoring Project

Choose a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery provider by matching its data to your area of interest, target, required detail, collection window, delivery deadline, analysis workflow, license, and total cost—not by comparing headline resolution alone. Ask each shortlisted provider for an AOI-specific feasibility assessment and representative sample data before committing.

Start with the mapping or monitoring job

Write down where the work will happen, what features or changes you need to detect, the time period, and whether the goal is baseline mapping, retrospective analysis, or repeated monitoring. Include any event window: a broad monthly cadence and a collection on a particular day are different requirements.

SAR is active radar: a satellite transmits a signal and measures the return, so it does not depend on sunlight and can acquire through clouds. But a radar image is not simply an optical photograph that happens to work in bad weather. ICEYE describes radar returns as carrying signal-strength and phase information related to surface texture, material, structure, and motion. Whether a target can be identified depends on the target and analysis method, as well as the data product and collection geometry. Ask for a sample suited to your use case rather than assuming a quoted pixel size proves detectability.

Compare resolution and footprint together

For the exact mode and product being quoted, ask for both ground resolution and scene footprint. A detailed mode generally covers a smaller area; broader-area modes trade some detail for coverage. Check whether one collection covers the AOI with enough margin, or whether the project needs multiple scenes or passes.

Capella’s published specifications illustrate why these values belong together. Its Stripmap product lists 1.2 m azimuth and 0.75 m slant-range resolution, with a scene 5–10 km wide and 20–100 km long. Its Parallel Stripmap product lists the same stated resolution values, with a 20 km width and 20–100 km length. These are product specifications, not a guarantee that a particular feature will be detectable. ICEYE’s product documentation likewise describes tradeoffs among scene size, resolution, and image quality.

Ask the provider to identify the resolution convention used in its quote and product documentation; do not treat different resolution measures or modes as interchangeable. Confirm whether the quoted footprint covers your full AOI and whether the proposed image quality and collection geometry suit the analysis.

Separate revisit, collection probability, and delivery time

“Revisit” describes how often a satellite or constellation may be able to return to an area. It does not by itself mean a collection is guaranteed on your requested date, nor does it say how soon the image will arrive after collection. Put three separate requirements in the request: the desired acquisition window or cadence, the likelihood or commitment for collection under the proposed tasking option, and the delivery clock after acquisition.

ICEYE’s version 6.0.8 product specification, reviewed in 2026, states that commercial priority collections have a statistical likelihood exceeding 90%, or 80% for its 1-hour service level. The 1-hour option is conditioned on commercial tasking and a successful feasibility check. These are ICEYE service statements under their stated conditions, not a provider-neutral probability or a guarantee for every AOI.

Airbus advertises intraday revisit capability and describes OneDay scheduling: it sends a weather forecast 24 hours before acquisition so the customer can confirm, postpone, or cancel at no cost. Ask which radar mission and product apply to your project, and request written feasibility for the coordinates and dates. The cited One Tasking material also discusses Airbus optical services, so a proposal should specify SAR rather than rely on the page’s broader service description.

Decide whether archive imagery or new tasking fits

Archive imagery may be sufficient for a baseline or retrospective study if its dates, coverage, collection geometry, and license fit the job. A specific event window or repeat cadence may require new tasking. Ask for archive acquisition dates and available geometry, then compare those against the analysis requirements before treating an archive match as suitable.

Tasking workflows vary. ICEYE describes ordering archive imagery and requesting tasking through customer support or its API. Capella describes cloud-native tasking through a web console or API, including automated collection workflows. Confirm how the selected provider handles feasibility, scheduling changes, and access to the resulting data.

Match the data product to your analysis workflow

Ask whether the workflow needs detected/geocoded imagery or complex products, and confirm the exact product level and metadata delivered. Capella lists detected formats SIDD, GEO, GEC, and CSI, and complex formats SICD, SLC, and CPHD. Its SAR Data Product Guide page identifies version 4.4, last updated December 10, 2025. Check the current guide and ask the provider to specify the product in the quote.

Before purchase, verify the details your analysis depends on: metadata completeness, coordinate reference system, polarization, incidence angle, calibration, processing level, and any required software compatibility. A general statement that imagery integrates with common geospatial software does not establish that every product and metadata field will meet a particular workflow.

Check license rights and normalize total cost

Get the license and order terms in writing. Confirm whether they allow internal analysis, sharing with clients or collaborators, publication, and redistribution, and whether attribution is required. Umbra’s pricing page describes its data as sold under CC BY 4.0 and says customers can share data openly and collaborate; verify the license that actually applies to the order and any additional contractual terms.

Umbra publicly lists prices for 5 × 5 km imagery. The following are the one-look prices shown on its pricing page as accessed in 2026; the captured page does not state a publication date. Treat them as page-listed prices, not a current, normalized quote or a cross-provider comparison.

Umbra 5 × 5 km product One-look price shown
1.0 m $675
0.5 m $950
0.35 m $1,750
0.25 m $3,250

The same page lists multi-look ranges of $675 for one look through $2,200 for ten looks at 1.0 m; $950 through $2,600 for eight looks at 0.5 m; $1,750 through $3,500 for five looks at 0.35 m; and $3,250 through $4,900 for three looks at 0.25 m. It separately lists 5 × 5 km Dwell pricing of $4,750 and scan prices by track length and resolution. Verify currency, product scope, delivery, current availability, and any additional services with Umbra.

Prices only become comparable when quotes cover the same AOI and area, imaging mode, product level, number of looks, tasking priority, delivery target, and license. Request an end-to-end quote with those terms itemized; a price per scene or per resolution label alone may hide material differences.

Evaluate support, documentation, and evidence

Ask providers for current product guides, sample metadata, support expectations, and clear documentation of collection and delivery conditions. NASA’s CSDA evaluation framework names data accessibility, metadata accuracy and completeness, documentation, promptness and quality of user support, and data usefulness for Earth-system science. These are practical procurement questions, not a universal scorecard for every use case. NASA lists evaluations involving Airbus U.S. SAR, Capella SAR, ICEYE U.S. SAR, and Umbra SAR; those evaluations do not establish a general league table for commercial mapping projects.

What the provider evidence supports

Provider Published evidence reviewed Questions to resolve for your project
ICEYE Multiple imaging modes; documentation on mode tradeoffs and service levels; archive ordering and tasking through support or API. Which mode and footprint fit the AOI? What collection likelihood applies to the quoted priority? What starts the delivery clock? What archive, format, and license are available?
Capella Product modes and formats, multi-orbit coverage, web console/API tasking, and automated collection workflow; guide version 4.4 last updated December 10, 2025. Which current product version and data level are proposed? What are the feasible collection window, delivery terms, license, and full cost?
Umbra Public 5 × 5 km and scan price tables, and a pricing-page description of CC BY 4.0 licensing. Does the listed price apply to this collection, product, look count, and delivery? What attribution and contract terms apply?
Airbus One Tasking material describes intraday revisit capability and OneDay acquisition planning with a forecast 24 hours before the date. Which SAR mission and product apply? What are resolution, footprint, AOI feasibility, delivery terms, license, and total quoted cost?

This is a capability snapshot from official provider materials, not an independently measured ranking. The reviewed material does not provide a normalized, current, AOI-specific head-to-head comparison of collection probability, revisit, image quality, and total price. Provider capabilities, prices, formats, and tasking availability can change; verify current specifications and terms before procurement.

Use a consistent request for information

Send the same project brief to each shortlisted provider so their responses can be compared on equivalent terms. Include:

  • AOI coordinates or boundary, area, target features, and any coverage margin.
  • Purpose and analysis method, plus required resolution, footprint, polarization, and product level.
  • Archive date range or requested collection dates, repeat cadence, event window, and acceptable schedule flexibility.
  • Tasking priority, collection feasibility and likelihood conditions, and the delivery deadline measured from acquisition or another defined event.
  • Required metadata, coordinate system, calibration, format, and sample data for the intended workflow.
  • Permitted use, client or collaborator sharing, publication, redistribution, attribution, and any other license conditions.
  • Itemized total cost for the same area, mode, looks, priority, delivery, and license, including any additional services.
  • Support route, documentation, and process for schedule changes or collection problems.

Compare the written responses against the project’s must-haves, then test representative samples in the intended workflow. A provider that is attractive on one metric may not fit the project if its footprint, collection window, product level, rights, or delivery terms do not.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
