Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFirst identify which OBS counter is rising. Dropped frames usually point to an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain—not necessarily a problem with the playlist. If OBS instead shows rendering lag or encoding overload, troubleshoot rendering or encoding performance separately.
For a playlist, OBS supports the VLC Video Source. Confirm it is set up correctly, then work through connection stability and bitrate before changing video settings. OBS describes dropped frames as a network or bitrate-capacity issue and says it is extremely unlikely that OBS Studio itself is the cause. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide explains the diagnostic path.

1. Check which OBS symptom you are seeing
Do not treat every performance warning as the same problem. Check OBS’s dropped-frames indicator separately from rendering lag and encoding overload:
- Dropped frames: OBS attributes these to the connection between your computer and the remote ingest server, or a bitrate the connection cannot keep up with. Start with network and ingest troubleshooting.
- Rendering lag or encoding overload: investigate whether the computer can composite and encode the scene on time. Follow the performance steps below rather than assuming the network is at fault.
The counters are useful clues, not a guarantee about the cause of every individual setup. A playlist is not, by itself, evidence that the network is dropping frames.

2. Verify the playlist source in OBS
OBS’s VLC Video Source can play a list of media files. The feature requires VLC to be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, the OBS guide says VLC must also be 64-bit. The single-file Media Source and the VLC playlist source are different options. See OBS’s Media Sources guide.
- Add a VLC Video Source to the scene used for the stream.
- Add the files you intend to play to its playlist and check the order.
- Set loop and shuffle according to the intended playback. Confirm that the source remains visible when the scene is live and that any scene changes will not hide or replace it unexpectedly.
- Preview playback in OBS before going live. If VLC Video Source is unavailable, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
These checks establish that the playlist is configured for the intended playback; they do not establish that the playlist caused network-related dropped frames.
3. Stabilize the connection and choose a sustainable bitrate
Test another ingest server and lower bitrate if needed
OBS recommends trying a different streaming server and reducing the video bitrate to fit stable upload capacity and the service’s limits. Its suggested starting point is 75% of total upload speed. Treat that as a starting point, not a guarantee: the connection must sustain the bitrate during the stream, and YouTube’s recommendations also depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate.

Change one setting at a time and test again so you can tell whether the change helped. A different ingest server is a diagnostic test, not a fix for an unstable connection.
Check Wi-Fi, VPNs, security software, and network utilities
- On Wi-Fi: OBS recommends trying a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable. Check that your computer and router can connect by Ethernet and whether a suitable cable is available. A cable will not fix an ISP outage, a congested route, an overloaded encoder, or an ingest-side fault.
- VPN: test whether the VPN is contributing to instability; if the problem changes when it is off, investigate its connection or routing settings.
- Security and network-prioritization software: check whether software is interfering with or deprioritizing OBS. OBS names Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software as examples, not a complete list. If you confirm interference, adjust that software or add an OBS exception; do not leave security software disabled.
- Network drivers: check for outdated drivers and update them through the appropriate device or computer manufacturer support channel.
Use OBS network options as tests, not cures
OBS lists Windows-only network optimizations and TCP pacing as options some users report helpful. Leave Bind to IP at Default. Trying IPv4-only can help isolate a connection issue; if it makes no difference, restore the IPv4/IPv6 default.
Dynamic bitrate adjustment can reduce the bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, potentially avoiding drops during congestion. The trade-off is lower output quality, and OBS cautions that it does not resolve the underlying connection problem. Find these options in OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance and confirm the labels in your installed version.

4. Match YouTube’s encoder settings to your output
YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. The following H.264 and AV1/H.265 figures are the recommendations displayed on YouTube Help when accessed in 2026; they are ingestion guidance, not proof that a particular internet connection can sustain the selected bitrate.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Codec | Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p at 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
For RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, YouTube specifies H.264, H.265, or AV1 at up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page before publishing, as platform settings can change.
If you are using HLS ingestion, use YouTube’s HLS-specific configuration rather than assuming RTMP settings transfer unchanged. YouTube specifies 1–4 second segments, TS format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. HLS has higher latency because it sends video segments rather than a continuous stream like RTMP. Switching protocols is not, by itself, evidence-based proof of a dropped-frame fix. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.

5. If OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload
When the performance indicator points to rendering or encoding rather than network drops, OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide recommends freeing GPU capacity and reducing scene workload. A simple playlist scene may not need extra hardware; first remove work the scene does not need.
- Simplify scenes and remove unnecessary sources or overlays.
- Reduce the number of expensive sources and filters.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate if the computer cannot keep up; for example, try 30 fps when 60 fps is not working.
- Test the changes while watching the relevant rendering or encoding indicator.
Do not make GPU-load reduction the primary remedy for a clearly network-related dropped-frames counter.

Before relying on a playlist for a longer stream, run a test with the same scene, media, output settings, and connection you plan to use. Confirm that playback advances as intended and watch OBS’s network and performance indicators. YouTube advises testing before streaming and monitoring stream health during the event; see its YouTube live streaming tips and encoder settings guidance.
Quick troubleshooting by symptom
| What you see | Likely branch | Next checks |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames increase | Connection to ingest or bitrate capacity | Try another ingest server, lower bitrate, test wired Ethernet if on Wi-Fi, and check VPN, network utilities, security software, and drivers. |
| Rendering lag or encoding overload | Scene rendering or encoder performance | Reduce GPU workload, simplify sources and filters, or lower resolution/frame rate. |
| Playlist does not appear or play as intended | Source setup or visibility | Check VLC installation and architecture, playlist contents, loop/shuffle settings, playback preview, and scene visibility. |
| Changing to dynamic bitrate reduces drops but harms picture quality | Connection congestion or instability remains | Review the connection and sustainable bitrate; dynamic bitrate is a quality trade-off, not a root-cause repair. |
