What you need before capturing pages
- The website’s sitemap URL, or its
robots.txtfile to check whether it declares a sitemap location. - An MCP client connected to a browser server that can navigate to a URL and take screenshots. Playwright MCP documents
browser_navigateandbrowser_take_screenshot. - A destination for the screenshots and a way to record which original URL corresponds to each file.
Do not assume the sitemap is at /sitemap.xml. Sites can publish it at another location; Google’s guidance says a sitemap location may be declared in robots.txt. A sitemap lists candidate URLs, but it does not prove a page is publicly reachable or that an automated browser can load it.

Find and parse the sitemap
Locate the sitemap document
Check the site’s published sitemap location or inspect its robots.txt for a Sitemap: declaration. Google recommends that sitemap entries use fully qualified, absolute URLs. Use those listed URLs as navigation targets rather than reconstructing them from relative paths. Google Search Central: Build and submit a sitemap.
Tell a URL set from a sitemap index
A sitemap URL set contains page locations. A sitemap index instead contains child sitemap locations; fetch and parse those child documents to obtain the page URLs. Google documents the index structure using a root sitemapindex element, child sitemap elements, and loc values. Its documentation specifies a maximum of 50,000 loc entries in a sitemap index. For large sites, collect URLs from each child sitemap and decide which pages you actually need to capture. A sitemap index limit is not a recommendation to screenshot every listed page in one browser session.
Capture each page with Playwright MCP
- Connect your MCP client to Playwright MCP according to that client’s setup instructions.
- Fetch and parse the sitemap document. If it is an index, fetch its child sitemaps and collect the page URLs from them.
- Choose a URL from the resulting absolute URL list and navigate to it with
browser_navigate. - If you need to locate a control or understand page structure before capturing, use Playwright MCP’s structured accessibility snapshot and inspect the page again after navigation.
- Call
browser_take_screenshotwith the desired scope and a destination filename. Repeat for each selected page, recording the URL-to-file mapping.
Playwright MCP supports screenshots of the viewport, a selected element, or the full scrollable page. The full-page option cannot be combined with a target element. Output can be PNG, JPEG, or WebP; when the format is omitted, the filename can determine it. See Playwright MCP documentation.

Choose the right screenshot scope

Use a stable filename tied to a URL or page slug, and keep a separate record of the original URL and output file. That naming approach is practical recordkeeping, not a Playwright requirement.

Failures, limits, and what to check
The sitemap URL returns an error
Check the sitemap location published by the site or declared in robots.txt; do not rely on a universal path. Confirm whether the document is an index and, if so, fetch its child sitemap URLs.
A listed page does not load in the browser
Being present in a sitemap does not guarantee that a URL is publicly reachable or that browser automation will load it. Record the failed URL and response or navigation outcome rather than treating the sitemap entry as a successful capture.

The screenshot misses content
Check whether you captured only the viewport when the needed material was below the fold. Use full-page capture for the scrollable page, or an element target for a specific region; do not combine those two modes.
The file format is unexpected
Check the screenshot format setting and output filename extension. Playwright MCP documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP output; the filename can determine the format if no type is supplied.

Google does not crawl a URL
A sitemap is a hint, not a guarantee Google will fetch the sitemap or crawl its URLs. Search-engine crawling and MCP browser navigation are separate: Google’s robots guidance also notes that a disallowed URL can still be indexed if linked elsewhere. Robots rules should not be treated as a reliable way to keep a URL out of search results, or as proof that an MCP browser cannot visit it. See Google Search Central: Introduction to robots.txt.

Is there a special sitemap format for Indian websites?
The cited documentation establishes no India-specific sitemap format or screenshot procedure. Follow the sitemap and URL structure published by the particular site.
Does a sitemap guarantee that every listed page can be screenshotted?
No. A sitemap gives candidate URLs; it does not guarantee Google crawling or successful automated browser navigation and capture.
