Response body travelling from the upstream server to the client | on |

Memory used while NGINX reads the client request body | 8K or 16K, depending on platform | Changing it alters memory and temporary-file behavior; it does not enable upstream streaming |
If an upload reaches your application only after the client has finished sending it, the relevant control is proxy_request_buffering. Turning off proxy_buffering cannot change when NGINX sends the incoming POST body.
Configure buffering only where streaming is required
The directive can be placed in the http, server, or location context. A location-specific rule is usually the safest choice because it limits the behavior to endpoints designed to accept streaming uploads.

Minimal upload location
location /upload/ {
proxy_request_buffering off;
proxy_pass http://backend;
}
Replace /upload/ with the URI handled by your POST endpoint and replace http://backend with the upstream definition used by your deployment. The directive is inherited from the previous configuration level only when no directive is declared at the current level, so a more-specific location can change the effective value.
Mixed buffered and streaming endpoints
http {
upstream app_backend {
server 127.0.0.1:8080;
}
server {
listen 80;
server_name example.test;
location /upload/ {
proxy_request_buffering off;
proxy_pass http://app_backend;
}
location /api/ {
proxy_pass http://app_backend;
}
}
}
In this pattern, only requests under /upload/ stream their bodies to the application. Other proxied requests retain the default request buffering behavior. Keeping the scope narrow reduces the number of requests that can consume upstream connection time while a client is still transmitting.
Applying a server-wide or HTTP-wide policy
You can set the directive in server when every proxied endpoint in that virtual host needs the same behavior, or in http when it is a deliberate policy for all applicable servers. Check every nested location before doing this: a child block may override the inherited value, and a broad setting can expose endpoints that were not designed to process partial request bodies.
Validate the configuration and reload NGINX
- Inspect the complete active configuration. Run
nginx -Twith the privileges used to administer NGINX. Search the output for the targetlocation, all nested locations, and every occurrence ofproxy_request_buffering. - Check the syntax before reloading. Run
nginx -t. Do not reload if the test reports an error; fix the reported file and line first. - Reload the running process. Use the reload mechanism provided by your service manager after a successful syntax test. A reload applies the new configuration without requiring a full stop and start.
- Confirm that the request matches the intended location. NGINX location selection can send a URI to a more-specific prefix or regular-expression location than the one you edited. Add temporary, clearly identifiable logging if necessary, then remove it after verification.
- Test the running instance, not only the file on disk. A correct file has no effect until the process has loaded it. Re-run
nginx -Tafter the reload if you need to confirm the generated configuration seen by the active process.
How request buffering changes the upload path
With request buffering enabled, NGINX reads the entire request body from the client before sending the request to the proxied server. Depending on body size and the memory available for request processing, data can be held in memory or written to a temporary file.
With proxy_request_buffering off, NGINX sends the request body to the upstream immediately as it receives it. This lets an application begin parsing or storing an upload while the client is still transmitting, which is the behavior needed for long-running uploads, streaming ingestion, and endpoints that must react before the final byte arrives.

Disabling buffering does not remove the need for an application-level request-size limit, authentication, timeouts, or storage controls. It changes when bytes are forwarded; it does not make an untrusted upload safe by itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not confuse request buffering with response buffering
proxy_buffering off; addresses a different symptom: the upstream has already produced a response, but NGINX is holding response data before delivering it to the client. Use it only when the response itself must be delivered incrementally or synchronously.
location /events/ {
proxy_buffering off;
proxy_pass http://backend;
}
This example does not stream the incoming POST body. If an endpoint needs both directions to be incremental, configure both directives deliberately and document why each is present:
location /stream-upload/ {
proxy_request_buffering off;
proxy_buffering off;
proxy_pass http://backend;
}
Most upload endpoints need only the first directive. Turning off response buffering unnecessarily can change response memory usage and delivery behavior, so treat it as a separate decision.
What client_body_buffer_size does—and does not do
client_body_buffer_size controls the memory buffer NGINX uses while reading a request body from the client. The documented default is 8K or 16K, depending on platform. If the body exceeds that buffer, all or part of it may be written to a temporary file.

Raising the value can reduce temporary-file writes for bodies that fit in the larger buffer, but it increases potential per-request memory consumption. Lowering it can cause more data to spill to disk. Neither change tells NGINX to forward the body upstream as it arrives.
| Symptom | Setting to investigate | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The application receives nothing until the upload finishes | proxy_request_buffering |
Request-body forwarding is being delayed |
| Temporary files grow during large uploads | client_body_buffer_size and request-body temporary-file storage |
The body exceeds the in-memory request buffer |
| The client receives a response in bursts | proxy_buffering |
NGINX is buffering the upstream response |
Protocol and NGINX version caveats
Chunked HTTP/1.1 request bodies
When a client uses HTTP/1.1 chunked transfer encoding, NGINX can still buffer the original request body even when proxy_request_buffering off is set, unless HTTP/1.1 or HTTP/2 is enabled for proxying. If slow chunked uploads continue to arrive at the upstream only after completion, inspect the protocol used between NGINX and the upstream rather than assuming the directive was ignored.
For an HTTP/1.1 upstream connection, make the proxy protocol choice explicit in the location when that matches the backend’s requirements:
location /chunked-upload/ {
proxy_request_buffering off;
proxy_http_version 1.1;
proxy_pass http://backend;
}
The correct protocol depends on the upstream and the rest of your configuration. Verify it from the effective configuration and from upstream-side observations; a client using HTTP/2 does not automatically mean that the NGINX-to-upstream hop is HTTP/2.
HTTP/2 support in older NGINX releases
Before NGINX 1.9.14, HTTP/2 request-body buffering could not be disabled. An older installation therefore cannot provide unbuffered HTTP/2 request bodies simply by adding the directive. Check the running version and upgrade before relying on this behavior for HTTP/2 traffic.

The directive was added in NGINX 1.7.11
proxy_request_buffering appeared in NGINX 1.7.11. If a configuration parser rejects the directive, the installed version is a primary suspect. Confirm the binary version and the configuration actually loaded by the running process before changing unrelated settings.
Understand the failover trade-off
Once NGINX has started sending a request body to an upstream, it cannot hand that same request to a different upstream. This matters when an upstream pool is configured for failover: a failure detected after body transmission begins cannot be treated like a failure found before any request data was sent.
Before disabling request buffering, decide how the application handles a connection that ends halfway through an upload. It may need resumable-upload logic, cleanup of partial files, idempotency keys, or a way to distinguish a client disconnect from an application error. These are application decisions, but unbuffered proxying makes them visible earlier in the request lifecycle.

A reliable test for “still buffering” reports
- Use a deliberately slow body source. Send a POST whose body is transmitted over a measurable interval rather than a request that completes immediately. A fast local test can hide buffering because the entire body arrives before you observe the upstream.
- Record timestamps in the upstream application. Log when the request is accepted and when the first body bytes are read. Client-side completion time alone cannot prove when NGINX forwarded data.
- Compare the first-byte and final-byte events. With effective request streaming, the upstream should observe body data before the client has finished sending it, subject to protocol framing and application read behavior.
- Confirm the selected location. Use
nginx -Tand inspect location precedence. A correct directive in an unused block produces the same symptom as a missing directive. - Check the running version and proxy protocol. Look for the HTTP/2 version limitation and the HTTP/1.1 chunked-transfer caveat before changing buffer sizes.
- Inspect temporary-file activity. Large temporary files can indicate that request-body buffering is still active or that the client body is being handled by another module or location.
- Test response delivery separately. If the request reaches the application promptly but the response arrives in batches, investigate
proxy_buffering; do not change request buffering to solve a response problem.
Common configuration mistakes and corrections
The directive is in the wrong location
A rule in one location does not affect a different location selected for the request. Put the setting in the block that actually handles the upload, or move it to a parent context only after checking all child blocks.
Only proxy_buffering off was added
This changes upstream-response handling and leaves request-body buffering unchanged. Add proxy_request_buffering off for the incoming POST body.
Best Value
The file was edited but NGINX was not reloaded
Configuration files are not applied merely because they changed on disk. Run a syntax test, reload the service, and inspect the active configuration.
An old binary is running
Directive availability begins with NGINX 1.7.11, and HTTP/2 request-body buffering has the additional 1.9.14 boundary. Check the version of the running binary, not only the package version you intended to install.
A buffer-size change was expected to enable streaming
client_body_buffer_size affects memory and disk spill behavior. It does not replace proxy_request_buffering off.
The upstream never reads the body promptly
NGINX can forward bytes as received, but the application or upstream server may choose to read them later. Measure at the upstream with application or server logs before concluding that NGINX is buffering.
Quick Recap
Operational checklist for production uploads
- Scope
proxy_request_buffering offto the endpoints that require streaming. - Confirm the running NGINX version is at least 1.7.11; use at least 1.9.14 when unbuffered HTTP/2 request bodies are required.
- Check the protocol on the NGINX-to-upstream connection when clients use chunked transfer encoding.
- Validate with
nginx -t, inspect withnginx -T, and reload before testing. - Measure upstream first-byte and final-byte timings with a slow request body.
- Review memory limits, request-body temporary-file storage, and cleanup of interrupted uploads.
- Account for the loss of upstream failover after NGINX begins transmitting a request body.
- Configure
proxy_buffering offseparately only when the upstream response also needs incremental delivery.
