Start with the paper and print settings: use fresh, flat paper made for your printer, load its printable side correctly, and select the matching media type in the print dialog. Let prints dry fully before touching, stacking, or reloading them. If the marks persist, check whether the paper path is dirty, then run a nozzle check before considering printhead cleaning or replacement ink.
First identify what kind of mark you are seeing
- Wet ink transfer: The image looks intact, but ink comes off when touched or leaves a mark on another sheet. Drying time, heavy coverage, glossy media, or a duplex workflow may be involved.
- Bleeding into the paper: Edges look fuzzy or colors spread into the fibers. Check whether the stock is intended for inkjet printing, whether it is damaged or damp, and whether the selected media type matches it.
- Repeated marks at an edge or spot: Marks in a consistent location may indicate contact with a contaminated paper path or roller rather than ink that simply needs more drying time.
These clues help choose a low-risk first test; a single print can show more than one kind of problem.

Check the paper and its printable side
Use fresh, flat paper that meets the specifications for your printer. Epson’s blurry or smeared printout guidance advises checking paper specifications. Look for dampness, curl, wrinkles, age, or other damage, and confirm the paper is intended for inkjet use and compatible with your printer and ink system.
For coated or glossy media, check the package or printer manual to find the printable face. Epson says the face is usually brighter or whiter for the paper covered in its paper-compatibility FAQ, but appearance is not a universal rule. Follow the media’s own instructions. Epson recommends its own media for its products; that is a manufacturer recommendation, not a requirement that applies to every printer brand.

If only one paper stock produces smears, test with compatible, undamaged inkjet paper before changing ink or cleaning the printhead. This isolates the media as a possible cause without assuming that a particular paper brand works with every printer.
Match the media setting to the loaded paper
In the print dialog or printer control panel, choose the paper or media type that corresponds to the stock in the tray. Menu names and available settings vary by printer model and operating system. A mismatch can result in unsuitable print behavior, so use the closest accurate setting rather than selecting a different stock just because its name sounds similar.

- 1 ream (500 sheets) of 8.5 x 11 white copier and printer paper for home or office use
- Multipurpose letter size copy paper works with laser/inkjet printers, copiers and fax machines
- Smooth 20lb weight paper for consistent ink and toner distribution; dries quickly and resists paper jams
- Bright white paper (92 GE; 104 Euro) offers great contrast for crisp printing and vivid color
- Virgin copy paper providing professional quality results; acid-free to prevent yellowing
For thick paper or envelopes, use the printer’s corresponding thick-paper setting if the model offers one. Some supported printers also provide print-density or ink-drying-time controls; reducing density or adjusting drying time may help when heavily covered output remains wet. These are model-specific options, not controls found on every consumer inkjet.

Let prints dry before handling or reloading
Allow output to dry before touching it, stacking sheets, framing it, or placing another sheet against it. Drying time varies with paper type and print density: Epson’s professional-printer guidance notes that ink may take longer to dry depending on both. The cited guidance gives no universal number of minutes or hours, so judge the output on its own and follow the paper and printer instructions.

For manual two-sided printing, wait until the first side is completely dry before reloading the sheet. Heavy or dark coverage on that side can leave marks during printing on the reverse. If one side is lighter, print it first, then let it dry before printing the heavier side. Epson’s troubleshooting guidance specifically advises letting ink dry before manually loading paper for two-sided printing.
Inspect the paper path if marks repeat in one place
If a smear appears at the same edge or position on multiple sheets, follow your printer maker’s instructions for cleaning the paper guides or paper path. Check that the paper is loaded in the correct direction and that the edge guides are aligned as directed for your model. Do not disassemble the printer or apply improvised solvents; use only the manufacturer’s documented procedure.

Run a nozzle check before cleaning the printhead
If paper, media settings, drying, and paper-path checks do not resolve the issue, run the printer’s nozzle check. Clean the printhead only if the check shows missing or clogged nozzles, and follow the model’s instructions. Repeated cleaning consumes ink, so it is not a sensible first response to fresh output that is merely transferring while wet. Epson UK also advises checking alignment in its smearing FAQ.
Ink age or formulation may matter when the basics are correct and symptoms persist. Epson UK identifies third-party ink as a possible contributor and advises checking the ink’s best-before date. Its FAQ says best results are achieved with the referenced inks within six months of insertion; that guidance is specific to Epson’s advice and should not be applied as a universal lifespan for all inks. If replacing ink, verify the exact printer model and cartridge or bottle specification in its manual.

Choose the fix that matches the symptom
| What you observe | First test | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| One stock smears, especially if old, damp, or not intended for inkjet | Try fresh, compatible inkjet paper | Printer and ink compatibility, coating and finish, supported size and weight, and printable side |
| Paper is correct, but the selected media type differs | Change the driver or panel setting to match the loaded stock | Exact stock against the closest available media option; use thick-paper, density, or drying controls only if provided |
| Fresh output transfers by touch, or marks appear during manual duplexing | Allow more drying time and keep sheets separate before stacking or reloading | Print coverage, paper type, and whether each side can dry before the next step |
| Smears persist after paper and settings checks | Inspect the paper path and run a nozzle check | Whether marks recur at one path location, what the nozzle check shows, ink age, and exact replacement specifications |
Printer-specific settings and maintenance steps vary. Consult the manual for your model when a control or cleaning procedure is not available in the general steps above.
