Inkjet printers form images by ejecting tiny, timed drops of ink through a printhead onto paper. A nozzle can stop producing a clean drop when ink dries or residue gathers at its opening, but missing lines are not proof of a clog: an ink-supply problem or printhead damage can look similar. A nozzle check is the best first diagnostic; cleaning should follow the instructions for the exact printer model.
How an inkjet printer puts an image on paper
A printer converts a document or photo into instructions that tell its nozzles when to fire. In carriage-style models, the printhead moves across the paper while the printer times droplets to build the image. The details vary by design, but two common drop-on-demand methods create the pressure that ejects ink.

Thermal-bubble inkjet
A small heater rapidly warms ink in a chamber. The resulting bubble creates a pressure pulse that pushes a drop through the nozzle. As the bubble collapses, more ink flows into the chamber for a later firing.

An electrical signal makes a piezoelectric element change shape. That movement pressurizes ink and forces a drop through the nozzle. Unlike thermal-bubble systems, this method creates pressure through mechanical deformation rather than a heated bubble.

Why nozzles clog
The opening at a nozzle is small, and ink at the exposed face of the printhead must stay fluid enough to form a consistent drop. When a printer sits idle, ink at that surface can dry or leave residue that interferes with drop formation. Debris can also deflect a stream, while damage to the nozzle surface or an interruption in ink delivery can prevent normal firing.

Printers may help protect the head while idle by capping it, firing drops from nozzles not currently needed, or wiping the nozzle surface. These measures reduce the risk of drying and debris problems, but they do not make every printhead immune to blockage or damage. Konica Minolta describes clogging in nozzle holes and nozzle-surface damage as printhead-life concerns in its industrial inkjet FAQ; that is general printhead context, not a measured failure rate for home printers. How to tell a clog from another problem
Missing lines, gaps, or banding can be consistent with blocked nozzles, but print quality alone does not identify the cause. A nozzle-check pattern shows whether particular nozzles are failing to print. If the pattern has gaps, that supports a nozzle-firing problem; it does not by itself prove that dried ink is the cause. Ink delivery trouble or physical damage may need a different remedy.
Run the printer’s nozzle check before cleaning. Epson recommends checking nozzles first so you can avoid unnecessary cleaning, and says cleaning uses ink and should be used when print quality declines. Follow the menu path and procedure in the manual for your exact model; names and available options vary. Epson: How to clean the printhead

Clean carefully and follow the model’s limits
Check ink levels first
Some printers will not run printhead cleaning if a cartridge is expended or ink is too low. Check supply status and consult the model’s instructions before starting. Replacing a low or empty cartridge may make maintenance possible, but new ink alone does not clear a dried or damaged nozzle. Epson’s tank-printer guidance also warns that low ink can prevent maintenance. Epson: ET-2850 maintenance guidance

Cleaning consumes ink. More intensive power cleaning uses more ink than ordinary cleaning, and on some models repeated maintenance can fill the maintenance box that collects waste ink. Check the output and the printer’s ink and maintenance-box status rather than repeatedly starting cycles without inspecting the pattern. Epson: SureColor P7570 support and maintenance guidance

Escalate persistent problems using the exact model’s instructions
Epson’s cited SureColor guidance says to turn off the applicable printer overnight after power cleaning if nozzles remain clogged, then contact Epson if they are still clogged. That sequence applies to the product family covered by that guidance, not to every inkjet. If the manufacturer’s procedure for your printer does not restore the nozzle check, contact the printer maker or authorized service rather than applying a generic solvent recipe or disassembling the head; construction and approved repair options differ by model.
