To stop headphones switching devices, first identify whether the cause is Apple automatic switching, Google Fast Pair Audio switch, multipoint, or the headphones reconnecting to a previously used device. For supported AirPods, set the device you want to use to When Last Connected to This [device]. For supported Google Fast Pair headphones, turn off Use audio switch. Multipoint and reconnect controls depend on the headphone model.
Why do my headphones keep connecting to another device?
Several features can look like the same problem, but they work differently. Note which device loses audio and which takes over, and when it happens: for example, when playback starts, a call arrives, the headphones power on, or another playback device becomes active. These clues help identify which control to check; no single trigger applies to every headset.

- Google Fast Pair Audio switch: Supported headphones can switch audio sources associated with the same Google Account.

Identify the headphone model and the devices involved before changing settings. Menu names and available controls vary by operating system and headset.
Stop supported AirPods from switching automatically
Apple lets you choose whether supported AirPods automatically connect to a particular Apple device. On the iPhone or iPad where you want them to stay preferred, connect the AirPods, then open Settings, tap the AirPods name, and select Connect to This [device] > When Last Connected to This [device]. Apple documents an equivalent choice on Mac.

This sets the preference for that device; you can still manually select the AirPods on another device. Apple lists AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, all AirPods Pro models, and all AirPods Max models as supporting automatic switching. Apple’s stated requirements include current operating-system versions, the same Apple Account on the devices, and two-factor authentication. Turn off Google Fast Pair Audio switch
On Android, open Settings > Connected devices, tap the settings icon beside the headphones, open Audio switch, and turn off Use audio switch. Google says Audio switch is on by default.

This control applies to supported headphones paired through Fast Pair to the same Google Account on each audio source. Google’s stated requirements are Android 8 or later and Google Play Services. If the setting is absent, the headphones or setup may not support this feature. Check Google’s Audio switch instructions.

Multipoint lets supported headphones connect to two Bluetooth devices. The headphones may remain connected to both while audio shifts from one source to another. On Android, Google’s control is under Settings > Connected devices > [headphones] > Multipoint. Google instructs users switching media sources to stop playback on the first device and start it on the second.

Whether multipoint can be turned off—or whether the headset offers connection-priority controls—depends on the model. Sony says only specific products support multipoint; check the product information or Sony app for your headphones. Consult Google’s multipoint guidance and Sony’s model-specific multipoint information. If you need simultaneous connections for calls, disabling multipoint may not suit your use; look for a control that changes the preferred device instead.
Prevent a previously used device from reclaiming the connection
If the switch happens when the headphones power on, a device may be reconnecting rather than taking over through an automatic-switch feature. Sony says its headphones may reconnect to the most recently connected device when turned on. Its instructions allow changing the connection through the device’s Bluetooth settings or the Sony app; the exact steps depend on the model. See Sony’s Bluetooth connection instructions.

As a practical fallback, disconnect the headphones from the device that should not claim them, or turn Bluetooth off on that device when it is not needed. Treat this as a device-specific workaround, not a universal setting for all headphones.
A troubleshooting order that avoids unnecessary resets
- Record the handoff: Note the device audio leaves, the device that takes over, and what was happening at the time.
- Check the matching ecosystem setting: For supported AirPods, choose When Last Connected to This [device] on the device you want to prefer. For Google Fast Pair Audio switch, turn off Use audio switch.
- Check the headphone controls: Look in the maker’s app or current support page for multipoint, connection priority, or related options for the exact model.
- Stop the unwanted device reconnecting: Disconnect the headphones in that device’s Bluetooth settings, or disable its Bluetooth when appropriate.
- Confirm model-specific steps: If the menus do not match or the switching continues, consult the manufacturer’s current instructions for the headphone model and software version.
The official procedures above do not require a factory reset as a first step. If none of the applicable controls exists, the headset may not expose a setting to prevent the behavior while keeping all its connections active.
