What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Start with the affected monitor’s Change History: find out exactly what Distill recorded before changing settings. Then fix the source of the noise—an incomplete page load, an overly broad selection, or a change that should be detected but should not trigger an alert. Distill’s documented approach is “Wait, Watch, Filter.”
1. Diagnose the alert in Change History
Open the monitor’s Change History and inspect the entry that triggered the alert. Distill highlights additions in green and deletions in red when deleted content is shown. Switch to text mode if it makes the difference easier to interpret. The change may be a formatting or layout shift, volatile content such as a counter or timestamp, a partially loaded page, location-specific content, or a meaningful change that needs a notification rule. Distill lays out this diagnostic approach in its false-alert guide.

Use the history entry to choose the remedy. If the page is captured before it finishes loading, adjust the wait. If irrelevant regions change, narrow the selection. If the change is real but not important enough to notify you every time, use a condition.

An early capture can make a page appear to change from empty to populated, or record a temporary layout before scripts finish rendering. In the affected monitor, open Options, select the gear beside Open Webpage Selector, and set Wait for duration. Distill recommends starting at 5–10 seconds and increasing to 20 seconds for slower pages. JavaScript-heavy pages may need more time.

Distill also says JavaScript may be disabled when it is not required to display the main content. Treat that as a page-specific option, not a universal speed fix: test the page with JavaScript disabled and confirm that the content you need is still present before relying on it.
3. Monitor only stable, relevant content
Use Open webpage selector to select the meaningful part of the page instead of watching the entire layout. Deselect changing elements such as timestamps, counters, ads, and widgets, then inspect the updated preview before saving. Distill’s Visual Selector generates a CSS selector by default; in the browser extension it uses XPath. You can adjust the selector in the selector view. See What is Visual Selector?

Full-page monitoring can capture content outside the section you care about and introduce more noise. Distill’s Visual Selector documentation says cloud full-page selection excludes ad and cookie-popup content when the relevant blocking behavior is enabled. For local monitors, you may need to close cookie popups manually; a browser ad-blocking extension is another option.
4. Use conditions for changes that should not always alert
Conditions apply after change detection: Distill first records that the page changed, then evaluates whether the change meets the rules. An alert is sent only if both stages succeed. Conditions may be set for an individual monitor or globally for the watchlist. If both global and local conditions apply, Distill says all applicable conditions must pass. Consequently, removing a local condition will not restore alerts if a global rule still rejects the change. Details and examples are in Optimizing Alerts with Conditions.

Choose a condition that matches the noise
- Content was only moved or reordered: use
Net Addedis not emptyorNet Deletedis not empty. Combine them with OR if either net addition or deletion should qualify. - The page returned to an earlier state: use
Textdoesn't match any previous textto avoid alerting on a repeat of previously seen text. - Small additions are irrelevant: Distill’s false-alert guide gives
Added text length is greater than 20as an example. Twenty characters is an example threshold, not a recommended universal value. Choose a threshold that will not hide short but important updates on your page. - Only a particular kind of text change matters: filter Added Text or another text type that corresponds to the change you want to catch.
Test a condition against example previous and current text before depending on it. An overly strict rule—or a rule applied to the wrong text type—can suppress the meaningful update along with the noise.
5. Check whether local or cloud monitoring explains the difference
Local monitors run through the browser extension or desktop app on your device, so that device and browser or app need to remain on for checks. Cloud monitors run on Distill’s servers and do not require your device to stay on. The two environments may receive different versions of a page. If history differs depending on where the page is accessed, Distill recommends local monitoring. For geo-restricted cloud checks, its false-alert guide mentions using a proxy or a dedicated cloud device; this addresses location-dependent output, not selector noise.

- After adjusting the wait, selection, or conditions, run Check Now twice in immediate succession. Distill’s validation guidance recommends confirming that these checks do not produce repeated alerts from the same noise.
- Test conditions with representative old and new text, including a short change if short updates matter.
- Simulate a known change by changing the monitor URL and check whether the revised selection and conditions catch it. Then restore the intended URL and confirm the monitor is configured correctly.
If a change appears in history but no alert arrives, open the bell icon on the history entry to view the Condition Debugger. A True result means the conditions passed and configured alerts were sent; False means they did not pass. Review both the monitor’s local conditions and any global watchlist conditions. If the change never appears in history, revisit the selected section and load timing first. Distill also documents email alerts in Get email alerts on webpage changes.

If you also need clean screenshots of pages for a workflow or report, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server—not a replacement for Distill’s change-monitoring conditions. Its GET endpoint returns a screenshot or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of the page; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and setup.
