Yes—you can run datarhei Restreamer on a VPS and publish a stream to YouTube, but a restart policy and reconnect attempts do not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 service. Plan for the stream’s sustained outbound bitrate, configure persistent storage and secure access, then test the complete path to YouTube before relying on it.
What you need before setting up Restreamer
- A VPS running an operating system supported by Docker and enough sustained outbound capacity for the selected stream bitrate.
- Docker installed on the VPS, plus a persistent location for Restreamer configuration and data.
- A live source configured in Restreamer. The source, ingest method, and any transcoding you choose determine the CPU or GPU resources required; do not assume Restreamer encodes every source.
- A YouTube stream ID (stream key) for the broadcast, handled as a secret.
- A strong, unique Restreamer password and firewall rules that expose only the services you intend to use.
No particular VPS provider or instance size is established here. Compare offers by sustained outbound bandwidth, transfer allowance and overage policy, continuous-video terms, route to YouTube ingest, firewall control, and acceleration if your workflow transcodes.

Deploy Restreamer on the VPS
- Install Docker. Use the instructions for your VPS operating system, then follow the current Restreamer quick-start for the Docker deployment method and image configuration.
- Persist configuration and data. The quick-start example mounts
/opt/restreamer/configand/opt/restreamer/data. Keep these mounted paths on persistent VPS storage so a container recreation does not discard the intended configuration or data. - Use an automatic restart policy. Apply the restart policy shown in the current quick-start so Docker can restart the service after a process or host restart. This is recovery behavior, not an uptime guarantee.
- Review port mappings before opening the firewall. The quick-start shows example mappings for the web interface and streaming services. Which ports are needed depends on the features and deployment configuration you use. Do not expose administration ports casually; restrict access where practical and open only what your setup requires.
- Set a unique, strong password. Do not leave a default or easily guessed credential in place. Protect the administration interface as carefully as other services on the VPS.
- Configure HTTPS administration if you need public web access. Restreamer’s network manual says its Let’s Encrypt setup needs one or more public domain names and accessible TCP port 80. A domain is not required for the YouTube publication path itself.
Connect Restreamer to YouTube
- Create or locate a valid YouTube streaming ID. In YouTube Studio, configure the live stream and copy its stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or include it in screenshots or logs.
- Open Restreamer’s Publication Service. Select the YouTube publication destination, enter the streaming ID, and save the configuration, following Restreamer’s YouTube instructions.
- Start the stream and verify it in YouTube Studio. Confirm that YouTube receives the signal and reports a healthy stream before treating the setup as ready for continuous operation.
- End the broadcast from YouTube when preserving the DVR archive matters. Restreamer warns that interrupting the stream at its end may prevent YouTube from saving the archive.
Choose encoder settings and test the whole path
For H.264, YouTube Help’s current recommendations include the following bitrate targets. These are encoder recommendations, not guarantees of image quality or of a particular VPS’s ability to sustain the upload.

YouTube’s live encoder settings also recommend RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (maximum four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Match settings to the source and encoder you actually use; the stream’s bitrate is the starting point for estimating VPS egress.

- Test with motion and audio representative of the real program; a static test image alone may not reveal problems that appear during normal content.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test and verify the stream remains stable over a meaningful interval.
- Check the VPS’s outgoing network use and any provider transfer or rate limits while testing. Leave headroom for audio, protocol overhead, bitrate variability, other VPS traffic, and operational variation; YouTube does not specify a universal headroom multiplier on the cited page.
How much bandwidth does a 24/7 YouTube stream use?
Estimate transfer from the sustained stream bitrate. At a constant 1 Mbps, decimal arithmetic gives about 10.8 GB per day and 324 GB per 30-day month, before overhead. Multiply those estimates by the bitrate in Mbps:

These are calculations, not provider measurements or quoted usage statistics. The calculation is Mbps × 1,000,000 bits per second × 86,400 seconds per day ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000,000. Actual usage can differ with audio, protocol overhead, bitrate variation, interruptions, and other traffic.

What to verify on a VPS plan
- Outbound capacity: Can the VPS sustain the selected bitrate to YouTube’s ingest, rather than merely advertise a high burst speed?
- Monthly transfer: Is the allowance sufficient for continuous egress, and what happens after it is used—overage charges, throttling, or suspension?
- Usage terms: Does the provider permit continuous video streaming?
- Network route and region: Is the route from the VPS location to YouTube ingest suitable for a stable upload?
- Firewall and ports: Can you control inbound access and expose only the services needed by the selected Restreamer features?
- Compute for transcoding: If the source must be transcoded, do the allocated CPU/GPU resources support that workload? Requirements depend on the source and chosen processing.
Separate YouTube egress from HLS viewer delivery
A VPS may send the program to YouTube while also serving viewers directly through HLS, but these are different traffic paths. Restreamer’s network manual describes maximum bitrate and maximum session controls for outgoing HLS viewer data; it documents an unlimited default (0). Those controls are not documented as a cap on the RTMP publication upload to YouTube, so do not use them to infer a YouTube egress limit.

What 24/7 operation does—and does not—mean
Restreamer’s FAQ says streams attempt to reconnect after a connection drop, the desired connected or disconnected state is stored on disk and restored after reboot, and the browser does not need to stay open. Those mechanisms can reduce manual recovery work for some failures, but they do not ensure end-to-end availability.

Restreamer’s FAQ contains a legacy warning that an HD stream can use over 1 GB per day and recommends flat-rate broadband for self-hosting. That is a broad warning in a legacy document, not a current universal estimate; use bitrate-based arithmetic for your own plan.
