To stop a recurring break reminder, first identify which app or feature is sending it, then turn off or reschedule the reminder in that app. If it has no suitable control, silence that app in your device’s notification settings. Focus or Do Not Disturb is better for temporary quiet, but check its allowed-app and priority settings because reminders may still get through.
Find the source before changing settings
A break prompt can be an app’s own overlay or a notification delivered by Windows, Android, or macOS. The distinction matters: a device-level Focus mode filters notifications, but may not stop an interruption displayed inside the app itself. If you do not recognize the sender, note the app name shown on the alert or open your recent notifications to identify it.

For a reminder that should stop recurring altogether, use the app’s own reminder setting first. For quiet only during work or study hours, use a scheduled Focus or Do Not Disturb mode. These approaches affect different things: the app setting targets its reminder, while device modes can silence other notifications too.

YouTube on a phone or tablet
- Turn it off in Settings: Open YouTube, tap your profile picture, then tap Settings > General. Switch off Remind me to take a break. YouTube documents this setting for mobile app versions 13.17 and later. YouTube Help: Take a break reminder.
- Change it from Time watched: Tap your profile picture, then Time watched. When the reminder appears, choose Change break reminder to adjust how often it appears or turn it off. YouTube Help: Take a break reminder.
YouTube says the reminder is on by default for users aged 13–17 and off by default for adults; those defaults describe YouTube’s documented setting and can change. The reminder pauses playback until it is dismissed or playback resumes. YouTube Help: Take a break reminder

Silence reminders with your device settings
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications.
- Select the app sending the reminder. Turn off its notifications, or leave notifications on and adjust whether it shows banners and plays a sound. Microsoft Support: Manage notifications in Windows.
- For temporary quiet, turn on Do not disturb from Notification Center or configure a Focus session. Check Do not disturb’s priority settings: alarms, reminders, and selected apps can be allowed. If the alert still appears during a focus period, review those exceptions. Microsoft Support: Manage notifications in Windows Microsoft Support: Focus sessions in Windows 11.
Microsoft describes Do not disturb as a way to silence notifications during critical times. It is not a guarantee that every reminder will be blocked; priority settings determine what can get through. Microsoft Support: Change notification settings in Windows
Android
- For a lasting change: Open Settings > Notifications and look for the app that sends the reminder, or open that app and change its reminder setting. Notification menus differ across Android versions and device manufacturers, so the exact labels and path may vary. Google Android Help: Control notifications on Android.
- For temporary quiet: Turn on Do Not Disturb and set a duration. Review its priority or allowed-interruption controls so you know which notifications remain permitted. Android also provides controls for blocking visual disturbances; on supported devices, Google documents Block when screen is on for preventing notifications from showing over other activity. Google Android Help: Limit interruptions with Do Not Disturb Google Android Help: Control notifications on Android.
Mac
- Open System Settings > Focus and select an existing Focus or create one.
- Under Allowed Apps, make sure the reminder app is not permitted if you want it silenced. Set a schedule if you want Focus to apply during particular hours. Focus can also filter selected people and time-sensitive notifications, depending on your settings. Apple Support: Set up a Focus on Mac.
Focus filters notifications; it is not a universal switch for every in-app reminder. If the interruption is an overlay inside an app rather than a macOS notification, look for a reminder or break setting in that app.

Choose the control that matches the interruption
| What you want | Use | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Stop one recurring reminder | The app’s reminder setting | Targets the reminder at its source, where the app offers a control. |
| Silence one app’s notifications | That app’s notification settings in Windows or Android | Can stop its notifications without muting unrelated apps; on Windows, banners and sound can also be adjusted separately. |
| Quiet many notifications during a work period | Focus or Do Not Disturb | Applies temporarily or on a schedule, but permitted apps, alarms, reminders, or other exceptions may still interrupt. |
| Stop an in-app overlay | The app’s own controls | Device notification filters may not affect alerts displayed within the app. |
If the reminder still appears
- Check the alert’s sender again; the setting you changed may belong to a different app.
- If you used Focus or Do Not Disturb, inspect allowed apps, priority settings, and reminder exceptions.
- If only the operating-system banner or sound needs to stop, change those notification options rather than disabling all alerts from the app.
- If the prompt appears inside an app, return to that app’s settings; an operating-system notification filter may not control it.
